I really really like this technical video, it fills up technical holes with science to make sense of the movie tech. Made it feel like canon material.

I first saw Ghostbusters in 1986, when I was two, and I've been hooked ever since, learning the science behind their equipment in an RIDICULOUSLY entertaining way just adds to my love of the franchise. And the 80's pop culture references are a nice little cherry! *Hands you a Nestle Crunch bar* You...You've earned this...

Definitely a lot of thought…intelligence is still up for debate. :-)
This is actually really cool. Great comic book-style "rubber science" explanations (the kind that loosely make sense in real scientific terms if you squint hard enough.) And I love the tie-ins to other Science-Fiction worlds like _Quantum Leap_ and _Honey, I Shrunk the Kinds._ Portraying Wayne Szalinski (Rick Moranis) as the cousin of Louis Tully (Rick Moranis) is a little bit of brilliance, as is making Sam Beckett a former student of Egon Spengler.
One of the biggest reasons why I absolutely love _Ghostbusters_ and think it's one of the greatest movies ever (sadly not true of any of the sequels, although _Afterlife_ was pretty great up until the last quarter of the film) is that the story would work just as well as a straight, non-comedic Sci-Fi/Horror movie, because pretty much all of the humor in the film derives from the way the protagonists react to the genuinely horrific events of the story. Swap out Drs. Venkman, Stantz, and Spengler for another group of less _eccentric_ group of scientists, and the story would work just as well.
In fact, something I would love to see someone make someday is a _straight_ adaptation of _Ghostbusters_ meaning one done without the comedic elements as a straight Horror/Science-Fiction story. At least written out as a novel, if not an actual film. It would most likely and very badly for the world, since Ray's split-second decision to have Gozer the Traveler manifest on Earth in the form of Mr. Stay-Puft, while seemingly absurd and moronic, actually _did accomplish_ what he had hoped it would do, trapping The Traveler forever in that form while on Earth, instead of any other potentially far more lethal manifestation. That is what ultimately gave the Ghostbusters the opportunity to cross their Neutrona Wand streams and reverse the particle flow through Gozer's gate to suck Gozer back through and seal it shut. Without Ray's comedic and seemingly stupid choice, the Earth would most likely have been destroyed by The Traveler.

No, and in the script and what Ray says in the movie is "neutronize." "Neutronize your field." I think someone mistranscribed the line as "neutralize" and now it's spread.
I just love these videos and the supposed mechanisms and functions of these devices. Brilliantly, and comedically done. Could you please do another set of videos on the differences of "classifications of ghosts?" (i.e. Class 5 apparition). I think you'd guys would knock it out of the park

The only question I have in regards to the containment unit is what happens to the trap cartridge after the cycle is complete? Ray tossed the housing unit aside into a box (I'm assuming) to have it reloaded later. If the cartridges are somehow taken by the unit, Egon's spending a fortune rebuilding the cartridges. Loving the videos though! They feel like a VHS copy of the Ghostbusters 101 training program (if there were such a thing.)
I believe the cartridge is recharged and then placed back within the housing for the next catch. It doesn't have to be done right away which is why it doesn't get removed from the containment unit right away unless several traps need emptied.

I have a theory about the Ghost Sniffer: It actually doesn't do anything. Egon fobbed it off onto Peter to make him feel like he's helping. 😃

That whole cut was so full of nice little grace notes...Ray and Egon make several decisions which amount to passive-aggressive revenge on Peter.

What happened to the ghost trap cartridges/how do you get them out of the unit(or are the cartidges expendable and new ones can easily be made), let alone how to get the ghost out of the trap and into the grid(either opening the trap via some kind of mechanism, or some other method)
They were wreaking havoc in our world, hence the “disorderly” part.

You know, keeping a containment unit in a densely populated area is convenient, but in the event another crossrip incident, wouldn't make more sense to store them remotely?
It's the pacific northwest, remote is most of what we have.
Very true, but the EPA standards get much more strict due to all the protected land. On top of that, we would either have to travel an hour out of town to deposit ghosts, or we would need a pipeline that connects HQ to the remote containment unit. If oil pipelines get protested, imagine the reaction to a spirit/demon pipeline. Yowzers!

okay..... but how do you retrieve the trap once its clean?
You likely perform steps 1,2 and 4 with a fully charged Muon Trap housing, while also putting the ECU in a “Trap Retrieval Mode” that allows the trap cartridge to lock back onto the housing and cuts off the power connection from the ECU to the trap cartridge. Once the system is locked, take it out of TRM mode and the ECU will return to normal operation ready to receive the next loaded trap.

Is it even explained why they keep the ghost and not exercise or banish them to the afterlife, they basically use science to go after the supernatural, but from what I remember of the original animated series and the extreme follow up rituals, ceremonies, and things of that nature work just as well so why do they bother to imprison them
You can't charge a yearly storage fee for a banished ghost. 💰
Well the "ghosts" that are contained, aren't actually people's spirits at all, but rather emotional energy that stays in the physical world.
When a living thing experiences an extreme emotional event (rage, sadness, fear or other) they may transfer some of the psychokinetic energy in to their environment related to that emotion.
Depending on the intensity and nature of the emotion, the PKE may linger in the environment long after the person has left or even perished. This PKE then manifest as an apparition or ghost with the traits of the emotion. Ghost born from greed for example will seek any items in the environment that it sees as valuable and a ghost born from gluttony will seek anything edible and try to devour it.
For these entities the environment they are formed in, serves as a anchor point to the physical world and they cannot leave the location on their own and end up "haunting" them. If these entities are removed from the environment, they will be drawn back to the point of origin and will return if not contained.
The entities are not peoples spirits so they can't cross over to other side, because they were never alive to begin with. This is why they need to be contained in the containment unit for the haunting to end.
Of course, some people in the paranormal investigation community, including one John Winchester and his two sons Sam and Dean, often assert the preference to develop a way to actually kill the specters, not just exorcize them banish them to Hell but actually kill them and be done with it. There are even stories that these Winchester men specifically found a weapon that would actually do just that. Namely, an antique Colt Single Action Revolver Pistol, which Sam Colt himself speciely enchanted for this exact purpose. Well, we at Ghostbusters North West are aware of a wide variety of different supernatural phenomena and would therefore not refute the possibility of such magical enchantments being developed for weapons, our investigations on the matter have not yet confirmed the existence of any such weapons. But the lore of the Colt Revolver and what sort of magical enchantments could make it possible for such a ballistic projectile based firearm to be genuinely lethal to specter beings is a lesson for another day.
I can't help but feel that an opportunity was missed here. When referring to when all the ghost escaped, it would have been great to refer to dickless shutting down the grid.

one thing NO ONE explains is the fact the internal part of the trap is still in the containment unit's import slot. see i always thought that the unit shelved that part and the power kept it activated. but of course it goes against the containment guide. so i ask why is the extraction of the inner trap part from the import slot not part of the procedure? why did venkman just throw the outer trap part away in the trash when he could have just inserted the inner part back into the outer part, recharge the trap, and then use it again on their next call? ITS BEEN BUGGING MY BRAIN FOR YEARS!!!

If that franchise’s unit is built the way my franchise’s is, then you’ll push the middle button on the opposite panel to lock in the new laser field, and repeat the first two steps to reattach the trap cartridge to its housing unit.
