  • Walking tour of Göbeklitepe Archaeological Site on a cloudy day. The footage of tour is taken around the ruins of the world's oldest settlement.
Göbekli Tepe is a Neolithic archaeological site near the city of Şanlıurfa in Southeastern Anatolia, Turkey. Dated to the Pre-Pottery Neolithic, between c. 9500 and 8000 BCE, the site comprises a number of large circular structures supported by massive stone pillars - the world's oldest known megaliths. Many of these pillars are richly decorated with abstract anthropomorphic details, clothing, and reliefs of wild animals, providing archaeologists rare insights into prehistoric religion and the particular iconography of the period. The 15 m (50 ft)-high, 8 ha (20-acre) tell also includes many smaller rectangular buildings, quarries, and stone-cut cisterns from the Neolithic, as well as some traces of activity from later periods.
The site was first used at the dawn of the Neolithic period, which in Southwest Asia marks the appearance of the oldest permanent human settlements anywhere in the world. Prehistorians link this Neolithic Revolution to the advent of agriculture, but disagree on whether farming caused people to settle down or vice-versa. Göbekli Tepe, a monumental complex built on the top of a rocky mountaintop, far from known sources of water and to date produced no clear evidence of agricultural cultivation, has played a prominent role in this debate. The site's original excavator, German archaeologist Klaus Schmidt, described it as the "world's first temple": a sanctuary used by groups of nomadic hunter-gatherers from a wide area, with few or no permanent inhabitants. Other archaeologists challenged this interpretation, arguing that the evidence for a lack of agriculture and a resident population was far from conclusive. Recent research has also led the current excavators of Göbekli Tepe to revise or abandon many of the conclusions underpinning Schmidt's interpretation.
First noted in a survey in 1963, the importance of the site was recognised by Schmidt, who directed excavations there from 1995 until his death in 2014. Since then, work has continued under the auspices of Istanbul University, Şanlıurfa Museum, and the German Archaeological Institute, under the overall direction of Turkish prehistorian Necmi Karul. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018, recognising its outstanding universal value as "one of the first manifestations of human-made monumental architecture". As of 2021, less than 5% of the site has been excavated.

Perhaps it's currently the oldest known settlement - but this did not spring into being with no predecessors, it's definitely not the first human settlement ever. That said, thanks for the video! It's an amazing site - those buildings are pretty sophisticated, with all the complex stone work.

Thank you for an excellent armchair tour!
Nice work by Turkey, et al for the Modern Humans facility. The canopy is complimentary and inspiring.
Obviously, this is not the "Zero point of Civilization". These Idea people and crafts people are generations, and hundreds of kliks, removed from there.
It is difficult for us in 21st Century to fully appreciate the magnificence of this accomplishment, or of Prof Schmidt's Team.

It's a lot bigger and a lot more spread out and a lot more unearthed than most online accounts and pictures that usually show just one famous little circular rocks and pillars spot.
It's way bigger than the impression that is widely given and even talked about. Even by the "experts".

What I don’t understand is the cost of building all that priceless art. That would of cost 100s of millions of pounds. And you would think thousands people would of been working at once. Amazing it was ment to be found I think at this time. I think the aliens are coming back

Do you take into account the more stable temperature 10 feet down.It is on average 65 degrees. The towers would radiate the cooler temp. in the summer and warmer in the winterThe pillars and bedrock would increase the effect. I did not look at the climate in that area. They would have had knowledge of this fact. They would have a roof and rim to keep the rain out.
The oil companies gain from our building style today and our laziness.

Gobeklitepe was built roughly 9000 years before the old testament was written, and 4000 years before the rise of Sumeria, so unlikely to connected with anything Abrahamic or the Sumerian myths form which Noah's flood derives.

Noah, Mysterious no, try this The great flood around 13,000 yrs ago, Noah landed on mt Ararat (the mount of salvation) there was noah, wife, 3 sons, previous workers and a anunnaki guide. When he
landed and set foot on land he was joined by the anunnaki leaders who were safely above the earth in sky ships. They were on the mountain some time while the water was settling, planting crops etc. Then with the aid of anunnaki relocating below cutting and placing the large pillars in place then the earthlings setting up walls with smaller stones. Now in time changes being made notice the carved stone heads especially the the sitting statues of a man a woman and three sons that scene is Noah his wife ham on the left of wife, shem and japhet on the right, notice hams hat different from noahs and the other two sons, why because ham did not hold the priesthood. Also notice the many heads similar to the sitting staues all repecting noah and family. The other statues represent the anunnakis.
