Normal sudoku rules apply. Digits along a line must be strictly increasing in one direction or the other. Digits separated by the white dot are consecutive. Digits separated by the black dot are in a 2:1 ratio.

Thank you for the wonderful showcase Mark. Your presentation was perfect and I have no notes on your solve. You found exactly the intended path and I even appreciated your opening discussion about the black dot being the only clue in the puzzle that differentiates behavior between the low digits and the high digits. I also prefer puzzles that break low/high ambiguity relatively early in the solve so your avoidance of using placeholder digits is much appreciated and hopefully you felt rewarded by how the clues played out. Did you honestly expect a 7 to be the first digit you placed in this puzzle? ;)
I took a break from Sudoku for a bit last year, but this feature feels like a warm welcome back into the community! Until next time 😄

By the way, I solved with *placeholders* and I would not have been able to do it otherwise. The inteded solution was harder in my opinion.

Some beautifully sneaky logic with the cross-box interactions with the small lines.
There are very few things as restorative as watching you solve such a lovely puzzle, Mark. Thanks so much for doing all that you do to bring us videos every single day.
i was dreading having to colour the whole thing, or resort to placeholders... i was quite happy that the colouring resolved very quickly!
Finished in 29:16 and barely pipped Mark. Love the logic for the bulbless thermos. The positioning of the thermos was cleverly done to make the break-in and the continued solve of the sudoku.

Nice puzzle and good to see this ruleset given an outing
Admirable deductions like the breaking in by black dot identification and that one in the late phase placing the 4 in the first column of box 1. Everything looks so easy because of Marks genius and routine, not because it is easy.
I finished in 80 minutes. I was, admittedly, lost at first for the first 20 minutes. That is until I saw the break-in using the extremes 1 and 9. From there, it was still not easy, but I kept making progress which is always nice. I finally finished after much persistence. Great Puzzle!
8:36 As soon as the 'purple' 2/8 is limited in box 6 row 6 (or in box 5 row 5), the black dot must be a 36 pair.
24:30 there is another stacking issue - r7c3 cannot be a 5, or it would force a 6 below it and break r3c3.
Thanks for these tips, this was very useful in helping me solve this as i didn't fully follow marks logic why the thermo on C4&5 R3 had to be 'Purple' and this avoided that logic completely

This came together nicely and like Mark I'm glad the ambiguity resolved itself fairly quickly as I wasn't relishing the prospect of keeping that in my head.

57:10 for me. Had a rough time starting. Saw the quintuples, but didn't know what to do with it. This one was clever. I liked it.
That little help of Mark articulating the logic helps us grow to be better solvers

Thus ine really clicked with me, the quintuples. The 2/8 and 1/9 groupings and pairs of cells on the horseshoes workiing together the the row/column to create a stretched pair. Thanks for introducing me to the puzzle.

Instead of placeholder digits I'd use letters. It makes it easier to swap out for the right numbers in the end.
The logic at 12:40 for me was easier to find, just by the fact that whichever from 2 and 8 wasn't in the bottom of box 5 was in the middle of row 5, it didn't need locating the green 28 in box 4, which seems like a hassle

Error at 9:35, I think. I don’t think you can conclude yet that r3c4-5 must be purple. I think that at this point you can only say that either r3c4-5 OR r7c5-6 must be purple. Or am I missing something?
[Unless Mark hasn’t fully expressed what he means by “purple”? I thought purple and green were only awarded to 1289? Edit: but now I think he’s using them to color all high or low digits, so now this makes sense. But I’m going to leave my comment here in case anyone else was similarly confused. Cheers!]

You make often the same mistake as Simon . When you place a digit, scan first in column and row instead of in the box 🤪 .
I had a good laugh when he was looking at how box 7 affected box 8 while ignoring the blatant 2. (Of course, he is way better at this than me, to be clear)

How are placeholder digits different from bifurcation?
Semantics. If you were in a sudoku contest, you'd use every tool available, including bifurcation or placeholders. CTC tries not to use those because they don't involve provable logic.
Placeholder you are still doing all the logic step by step, so if you do it the wrong way (which you find out when you conflict with the single point of given clue that differentiates the order,) you still solved the puzzle to that point, it is just that the next step is flipping all the digits around to their counter-point (9s flip to 1s, 8s flip to 2s, etc). So you don't have to back-track, like you would if you bifurcate the wrong way.
Imagine using letters from A through I as the placeholders instead, and maybe it will seem more different. Place them in order for convenience and convert them to 1 through 9 once logic forces you to choose a direction. Fundamentally, it's exactly the same as choosing 1-9 and possibly flipping them when the direction is revealed, but conceptually feels more akin to using colouring to track possibilities than bifurcation.
Coupled with the previous poster's point that it doesn't bypass any of the logical steps required for solution, hopefully you can see it as a different thing.

Generally I'd say it comes down to proving uniqueness. If you have two (or more) options and just continue to solve after picking one, you haven't really proved it to be a unique solution and I'd call that bifurcation. If you're using temporary marks to work through possibilities (like using corner marks to visualize consequences ex. if this was a 5, this cell would have to be a 7 or 8), I wouldn't call that bifurcation. Also in these videos, Mark and (maybe more often) Simon will put in Digits specifically to help us as viewers visualize. I wouldn't call that bifurcation either.
Why didn’t you edit out Mark getting phone scammed?
They don't really edit their videos for interruptions like that. They'll stop the recording if they need to be gone for a while (usually Simon, he's got younger kids) and he did have to censor some stuff on the Jane Street solve he did a week ago. ISTR that was part of them solving live, but I might've just imagined that part. I assume it's just because neither of them are extremely tech savvy, and they do each record, edit to add titles and whatnot and upload a video every single day. Not many CZcamsrs I've seen do that, especially ones that edit videos themselves.
Why bother? It was brief, did not actually take Mark away from the camera, Mark did not speak to anyone (except to us), there were no extraneous noises that would have been troublesome for his family; I think that it was fine to just leave it.
Gah, I am extremely frustrated right now. Over three hours fighting this damn thing, and I still haven't cracked it. I hunted for ages at the bottom, thinking it would open up any minute, only to finally find I was looking in completely the wrong place. And even that only gave me a little bit of an advance. It's all blocked up yet again.
As much as I love puzzles in general, I really, really hate the ones like this that pivot on finding one small key to break a gridlock. There's no finesse to this, just brute force trial and error.
Yet another one of these recent puzzles that have short videos, but turn out to be real struggles. A whole evening sucked away and I can't afford to spend any more time on it. I give up.
