  • We're back! Also, as many viewers instantly pointed out, the 'Minotaur' is the old Golden Daemon design that we didn't recognise for some reason. Not sure how we missed that but it's fine. IT'S FINE.

Yeah, I assumed it was the Golden Demon. Which, in context, is strange that a bunch of presumably loyalist Space Marines are waving it around.
(As an aside, one could probably create a "Golden Demons" chapter of marines. Puppetswar has a few custom helmets that could convey that, like demons or goats, without straying into the "obviously Chaos" territory.)

Yeah that Golden Daemon was on the cover of the old early 90's paint box, though at the time i thought it was just some kind of ogre or troll! I remember it was sitting on a stool I think, and wearing like a magnifying monacle and was painting a figure.

A weird thing about that black/reddish-orange/yellow/Blood Angels chaplain paint scheme is that the chaplain displayed originally appeared as a Howling Griffons chaplain in White Dwarf - you know, the chapter with the yellow/red quartered paint scheme. Presumably a tight deadline meant that they got turned into a Blood Angel with the addition of a few blood drops instead of a whole new model being painted.
I am really chuffed to see that Techmarine painted up, also I quite like the coincidence that you painted their shoulder pads purely metallic, as that is how I painted up the Techmarines in the Fire Angels army I collected for Rogue Trader 30+ years ago. 🙂

However, to be fair with these sets, I always thought of them as a supplement of the main basic set. I was going to comment about the Golden Demon on the flag, but that seam has been mined enough already.
What I _will_ say is that, back in Ye Olden Times before the Dawn of the New Millennium, we used to do a black undercoat (usually a car primer spray from Halford's because it was matte and intended to take paint as opposed to the Citadel spray, which was basically the same satin finish as in the pots - two swift passes from far away rather than one close-up, to avoid gunking up the detail) but _then_ do a coat of Smelly Primer (a white paint which was thicker than Skull White, to better cover the black spray... I really missed that stuff when they discontinued it) on the front face of any surface which was going to have a bright solid colour on it, leaving the shaded parts (like panel lines and edges, less well-lit surfaces on the chest, eye holes and those little vents in the MkVI nosecones) and the metallic bits black, before we started applying the actual colourscheme. That way, the colours popped more and the shadows didn't need any inks, just drybrushing in a highlight colour to pull it together.
(That was for army-builders to save time, of course - inks and special details were for HQ units and personalities.)
Then paint all the mechanicals like pipes, guns and exposed joints in Bolt Gun Metal straight over the black, drybrush in Chainmail then again in Mithril Silver and drybrush most coloured surfaces in white (except reds and oranges, where you used yellow) and you'd have a pretty serviceable quick'n'dirty Marine paintjob. As a rule of thumb, anything which wasn't in specific chapter colours like armour plates was left black for the undercoat and painted metallic for contrast.
If you wanted to get _really_ grimy, you could give the metal bits a wash with a mix of equal parts Brown and Orange ink for a rusty finish... but I usually didn't bother because after that you're just a small step away from picking out details like receivers and trigger guards in silver and brass on every miniature, and that way lies madness, joint strain and myopia.
The only really tricky bit was getting the fleshy heads right on Sergeants and the like... a Terracotta base coat over white with a suitably-fleshy colour for painted highlights like noses, chins and cheekbones (Bronzed Flesh when I started, but I prefered Bleached Bone which they introduced later as it was a shade paler, because I got the impression the Adeptus Astartes didn't get much time under the sunbeds) and a 1-in-4 watered-down Brown ink wash dabbed off the highlights with a tissue to avoid excessive shine did the job of pulling the colours together, with eyes dotted in white with a 000 brush (and pupils in black with a brush my little brother had destroyed down to a single hair).
Most of the time though, I didn't bother with the ink-wash and drybrushed very lightly in white to blur the transition a bit instead - it didn't make them look like a masterpiece doing it that way, but it came out looking sort of like the cell-shading in "Borderlands", so it wasn't completely terrible and saved a lot of time and effort being careful not to let the ink pool. Hair was yellow with a heavy white drybrush, because I remember seeing Marines being described as basically Aryan (an obvious fascist-Imperium nod) so I assumed they were all blonde-haired and blue-eyed like clones of Ivan Drago from "Rocky" as a result of the homogenising gene-seeding process. I mean, back then they all had the same crew-cut.
Bases were just white undercoat, then Woodland Green with a heavy drybrush in Goblin Green and a much lighter one in yellow (usually couldn't be bothered to use flock, so I just used the basic uniform texture on the Slottabases) and probably some Chaos Black around the edge to neaten it up. If I was feeling particularly saucy, I might paint over the black rim with Shining Gold or write something on it like a title or a motto for a display piece.
If you wanted to get _extra_ granular, varnish was a spray-gloss (again, two passes from a distance to avoid gunk) but with a matte varnish - applied with a dedicated 00 brush not used for paints - over the top to any exposed skin to dull the shine on the people-coloured bits and the dirt on the top of the base, providing a contrast with the smooth plasteel and metal textures of the armour... but to be honest I'd usually lost interest and moved on to another mini by then so I didn't get into advanced texturing techniques like that.
I never liked the super-glossy-finish-on-everything look which was popular on most of the Golden Demon entries of the time, anyway - it obliterated the details in the photos with all that reflection, and made the whole model look like a dank, sticky, slimy blob. That's great for Nurgle daemon tentacles, but not for the genetic pinnacles of Humanity.
Of course, I was a bit of an over-achiever, so I created my own chapter colours - Blood Red armour with thighs, forearms and upper chestplate in Red Gore (the two-tone red was subtle but effective) and yellow for MkVII shoulder-edges and other highlights (MkVI shoulder-nipples were in silver)... and then a stupidly-overcomplicated flame pattern along the bottom edge of the right shoulderpad (which I nicked from a Reaver colourscheme on a pale-blue background I saw on the inside of the Codex Titanicus cover) because I apparently hate myself and love to suffer.
It was a yellow base (Sunset Yellow in the beginning, Bad Moon Yellow when we finally ran out) over a thin one-pass Skull White undercoat applied on top of the block-Blood Red shoulderpad, a dab of Red Gore dotted in at the bottom and drawn up while the yellow was still drying, then a thin line of Red ink at the base of the flames to darken it once the whole thing was nice and dry, edged with a careful steady hand painting a black line with a 000 on the right-angle surface between the shoulder and the yellow edges to provide a hard border. The anaemic white undercoat meant that the yellow faded somewhat into the dark red behind it, and combined with a second yellow pass which only went halfway-up it looked blended without the effort and gave a nice background for the reds. The end result was pretty sweet if I say so meself, even though the process took about as long as the rest of the miniature again.
Then squad variants in bright primary colours (usually the bracelets, glove backs, right kneepad and left shoulderpad with no flames on the MkVII's - I think we'd finally exhausted all our stockpile of plastic MkVI's by the time I introduced this by chopping them up for battlefield injuries) with their role marking on the left shoulder, all for a practical gameplay purpose - having that reds'n'yellow scheme with one bright flash of blue, white, orange or green actually showed up those details really well and made it easy to identify different formations while keeping a nice unified colourscheme throughout, so you could easily tell one Tac squad from another for unit coherency purposes when they were moving up in close proximity.
I once challenged myself to paint up an Epic Marine in these colours, using the aforementioned one-hair brush for small details and squinting through a powerful magnifier... my wrist and elbow was aching and I couldn't see straight for a week, but I only bloody did it!
Not that anyone could actually _see_ the immaculate 3-stage flame paintjob on the 2mm-tall shoulderpad without said magnifier to appreciate it... 😢

As someone who actually did paint with those paints back in the day, Terracotta, Salamander Green, Blue Grey and Bolt Gun Metal covered really well. CONSPIRACY THEORY TIME: I’ve compared the Coat D’Arms (CDA) line to the (early/mid) 90s GW line, and I’ve compared the CDA line to the Privateer Press P3 line, and in both instances they seemed nearly identical. And Mike McVey, who headed the GW paint redesign from the original 1988 range to the 1993-ish expanded range, was also the original designer of the P3 range.
My conspiracy theory being: P3 paints is also made by HMG, and is also a remake of the 90s GW range.
PS: shout out to Warcolours, whose Nostalgia ‘88 range (which was essentially expanded to cover the full 90s range) is an excellent range for us Oldhammerers, including the best modern Goblin Green.

Still have nearly all the pots from the original Colour and Space Marine box sets. None of them had labels, and I don't recall there being a Salamander black, that must have come later.
Son is using the Blood Angel Orange for the lenses of his Ultramarines and the White, now an off-white and Flesh for zombies.

D6-based colour schemes seems entirely appropriate for the early years of RT/40k.

Damn, I had this set way back when. I super wish that they still sold their paints in 20ml pots. Sometimes I even miss the old colors. That painting guide was amazingly useful and inspiring back in my youth.

0:37 - My very first Warhammer purchase! I still have most of the old Bolter shell pots... not that I can actually still open any of them, mind. Or that they have any liquid paint left whatsoever...

damn. i'm old. i remember buying that set. flicking through that book and being inspired to paint up my blood angles and learning hard that expectation rarely matches reality.

Wouldn't mind seeing a comparison between these and the Nostalgia 88 set of the same name from Warcolours, they're supposed to be at least a 99% colour match.

I recently opened one of those old pots holding Forgeworld pigments - with the white cap crumbling into pieces in my hands. Whatever softeners were used for that plastic must have been gone for years. So - if you have those old pots, open them carefully to avoid any ugly surprises... (Unless FW used different material for their pots).

i missed the opportunity to send any to the PO box but would you ever do a video relating gunpla? maybe more a wibdoesstuff type of video really, but it'd be interesting to hear your take on the differences between the hobbies. personally i dont really have the desk space for painting and get sensory issues from having glue on my hands, so getting into gunpla has given me a much needed outlet for the modelling bug. the poseability and bigness are also very fun and good for my autism brain, and theres even a skirmish game made for gunpla models. it feels like the respective hobby communities are oddly separate considering how similar they are in a lot of ways

Given that Techmarines are meant to be red, you could probably insert the one painted in this video into your Lamenters army as-is. Or maybe with a minimum amount of painting to signify its Lamenters allegiance, like the shoulder pad. Though I can imagine you're not exactly eager to paint more checkers.
