I absolutely LOVE the weird, incredibly Extra, horrific nature of the Imperial Assassins. You've got one sociopath, one psychopath, one body horror and one cosmic horror. Perfectly Grim Dark. (Also congrats on 50!)
Indeed, although tbf with all the war the Imperium wages it's hard to not find masses of orphans ingrained in whatever apparatus all over the galaxy, human or not
Congratulations on 50 episodes! I vaguely remember a story about a Vindicare Assassin who stayed so still for so long, people on the target's planet assumed he was a statue and just ignored him.
Videos like this make me wanna experience 2E. Chaotic, vibrant, fluffy, and probably spirals outta control if you ever try hard it. The models, paint schemes, the writing, and rules just scratch some part of my brain I'm not familiar with. It's got that high school flair of when you're just throwing everything at the wall and you've got a vague ability to direct it and be deliberate, but not the good sense of when to pull back. It's just so earnest.
There's a story in the 2nd ed Space Wolf codex where Ragnar Blackmane and some Marines are hunting Tyranids on a planet. During the battle, Ragnar runs up to a Screamer Killer, pops a grenade into its mouth, then kicks himself clear before it explodes. F'ing. Metal. 2nd ed's rules are a bit of a trip when compared to the current iteration, but I remember having a good time with them back in the day.
For a loooong time 2nd Ed was my chosen game. It always seemed to have the nice balance of crazy stuff with an actual playable game in it. The sweet spot between Rogue Trader and the all-business third ed. It is interesting how people think 9th is too bloated - 2nd ed players find that level of complexity quite attractive sometimes... It spawned the original Necromunda, too.
During 4th (or was it 5th?) edition, a friend got his hands onn2nd edition and we played a few games. I was unbalanced. But it was fun as hell. You had so many cinematic moments. My favourite was when I played Space wolves vs Chaos Marines. I cast a spell that opened two portals, and drove half a dozen blood claw bikers trough. Charging a lone Chaos sorcerer. That sorcerer killed every single biker. And since they had enough speed you rolled a scatter die and saw the riderless bikes go on and crash in the distance. I was SO close to kamikazing the bikes into a juciy target but no hits. And I think this is telling. I did something cool. Got stomped. But I aint even mad. It was amazing. The only thing stopping me from playing it again was that shooting realy felt unbalanced/overpowered. But I only played like 3 games so I might be wrong on this one. 4.5/5 . Would recommend yoy try it.
We had a battle, Eldar + Ultramarines vs. Orcs + Alpha Legion. The Ultramarine was positioned a bit to clumpy. The Orc fired some missile that generated some field that put nearlly all Ultramarines prone for two turns. Eldar was not amused. But after years... it becomes a story told with fond memory. That was 2E :)
4:54 I love the way that the assassin, surrounded by a whole squad of Striking Scorpions, is snapped with what looks like a cheesy grin straight to camera as if sharing some fourth-wall-breaking joke with the audience...
As someone who started in 2nd edition, I absolutely care about these topics. I appreciate you two reminding me of the glory days of this hobby before competitive play smooshed the idea kids playing a game for fun.
This has, and will continue to be, one of my favourite shows on CZcams. I genuinely get a smile on my face when I see a new episode posted. Thanks so much for taking the time to put these together!
Back in the 90s a friend and I once decided to have a massive battle between Blood Angels and Ultramarines plus any Imperial Soup we had lying around. We just played it to the last man standing and it came down to his Vindicare and my Callidus duking it out on the top of a Ghostbusters tower we were using as a fortress.
I can't believe Codex Compliant has had 50 episodes. I remember watching the "Weird and Wonderful Things from Rogue Trader" videos when they released! Happy Anniversary to one of my favourite series on the platform!

The generic Assassin in Codex Imperialis was absolutely amazing. Displacer Field, Polymorphine, Combat Drugs, Power Glove, Sword, Web Pistol, and Rad Grenades. He came out to 200 pts which meant 2 VP if you managed to kill him and he could literally tear the @$$ off anything in any army.
The Callidus assassin had a very… let’s say “fun” strategy that was used a lot in 2nd edition. Give them a vortex grenade, reveal next to your opponent’s commander on the first turn, vortex grenade them and they’re dead on a 2+. I remember hearing a story of a guy facing his assassin the wrong direction while doing this strategy (units had fire arcs in 2nd edition) and his opponent didn’t allow him to correct his mistake in the shooting phase. This ended with the opponent’s face through the drywall. Ah, the 90s.
