It’s one of the things I love about the show. They took and distilled the ridiculousness of Portland into vignettes and just improvised the details. Brilliant.
My fan theory is that Portlandia is the White Lodge. It's got tons of dopplegangers, surrealism, and Kyle MacLachlan, but it's very upbeat and benevolent for the most part.
What a great ending for Twin Peaks! I mean, I did think that Dale Cooper just bursting out singing was weird for a minute, but in the end nothing could have been more perfect :)
I've watched this every few months for nearly a decade and it never gets old. I'm particularly fond of 0:48 when the mayor starts to trail off, only to bring it all back so triumphantly. Clearly improvised on the spot and yet somehow -- more powerful than every national anthem I can think of.
Lyrics: OH, AH AH AHH - AH AH AHHHH OHH PORTLAND YOU’RE SO BEAUTIFUL HOOOO - HOOOOO, MY CITY, MY PORTLAND ALL THE BIRDS, THE CRICKETS AND THE FROGS THEY CHANT HER NAME, OHHH HER MOUNTAINS SO WIDE, SO TALL BA BAH, BAH BA BAHHH LA LA LA, LA LA LAH AND WHEN WE’RE ON THE STREET, AND YOU PULL OUT A CIGARETTE AND SAY TO ME, OH MR. MAYOR, LET’S GO TO YOUR PLACE I SAY, PORTLAND OH, I THOUGHT YOU’D NEVER ASK, AND I WILL LA LA LAH, LA LA LAH, LA LAH, LA LA LA LAH SING TO ME, HA HA HAH AND WHEN I SEE THE SUNLIGHT GLINT UPON YOUR BRIDGES, IT MAKES ME THINK OF ALL THE TIMES THAT YOU AND I HAVE BEEN TOGETHER YOU ARE MY DARLING GIRL, MY BEAUTY, MY PORTLAND I KNOW YOU BEST OF ALL, YES I DO, MY PORTLAND
Ah ah ah aaaah Ah ah aaaaah, hoooh, PORTLAND, you’re so beautiful Hooooh ooooooh My city! MY PORTLAND! All the birds, the crickets, and the frogs They chant her name! Ooooh, her mountains so wide! So tall! Bah bah, buh buh buh, la la la.... LA LA LAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! And when we’re on the streets And you pull out a cigarette and say to me Oh, Mr. Mayor! Let’s go to your place I say PORTLAND Oooh I say I thought you’d never ask And I will. La la la, la la la, la la, la la la la sing to me HA HA HA! And when I see the sunlight glint upon your bridges It makes me think Of all the times That you and I have been together You are my darling girl My beauty My PORTLAND I know you best of all Yes I do My PORTLAND
Likewise, this song is getting me through the day, listening to it on repeat... but why is rather a strange story... There's another song about Portland, by a Russian folk singer, can't remember his name. Well, that song was a kind of 'anthem' for a girl who had an affair with me back in 2012. The hook line in the song was 'never go back to Portland'... And, that became analagous with her struggle choosing between the two of us. Well, fast forward to 2021 and I've been held in the web of that girl who turned out to be a compulsive liar for the best part of a decade. I was fool enough to buy a home with her in 2015 and she is nearing completion of a year long assault on it whilst I was locked out of the country by lockdown. Old friends conspired with her, proceeded into blackmail, full works. A blues bar I frequented, indeed. Thing is, In sorting that situation out today, I looked for a little something to express my sentiments in closing. A deal is agreed, she wins it all. To end the year in, year out, so, so tired of it... To say bravo for achieving the very worst, the greatest hypocricy, her claiming herself a victim all through, of course. So I put 'portland' into youtube, meaning to find that song, to say... look at where you've brought us, you great wazzock, not that I really give a damn anymore, ...And this song pops up... Thing is, we got really into Twin Peaks, intensely, really intensely, just before we separated in 2018... and everything went twin peaks as the web of deceptions spread and pulled in those once trusted allies. Since then, I've been suffering her from a 1000 miles away. Coming to terms with the loss of a life and the reality of a lover turned worst enemy as I work to duck and weave to outplay the havock wrought in her unending haze of self deception. ...Which I am quite tired of fielding. And this song pops up. And it's the end of Twin Peaks, of the series we didn't watch, apparently. ...And that's me, singing that song. Every frame, every absurd utterance is just as I would direct it to say what I wished to express yet knew not, exactly, what it was, before I heard this... And I must say, that is a might peculiar. ...What strange magics are woven before our very eyes.
This is freaking hilarious. I have to catch up on this. Too awesome. It also seems like he's channeling Leland Palmer singing show tunes, for those who are interested in potential influences.
ever since I found out they told him to improvise whatever for this scene I find it like ten times funnier than it already was
hahahaahahha thank you for sharing this
He is a PURE genious. And soooo emotive, sensible and creative. I met him a month ago. I was mezmerising. I LOVE him!
At 1:45 KM is credited for the lyrics :)
That’s amazing
It’s one of the things I love about the show. They took and distilled the ridiculousness of Portland into vignettes and just improvised the details. Brilliant.
dale cooper goes so fucking hard
concept: twin peaks, exactly the same, except instead of the red room dale dreams of this
"i just had the strangest dream, diane"
My fan theory is that Portlandia is the White Lodge. It's got tons of dopplegangers, surrealism, and Kyle MacLachlan, but it's very upbeat and benevolent for the most part.
@@otflipz1 Why the hell were you watching the video if you think Portlandia is so bad?
1:41
I started watching Twin Peaks and I thought it sounded familiar
“And you pull out a cigarette and say, ‘OH MR MAYOR!’”
the fact that this whole thing was all improv, makes even more funny
This is what it would sound like if the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel could make noise
you win
Over the course of his entire career, Kyle hasn't gotten ANY less cool or charismatic
he is a genius. Half of every episode should feature Mr. Mayor.
"Oh Portland I thought you never ask...And I will"
damn straight mr mayor
But, but I though he was reggaey?
0:52 Fred has to turn away
Coop's best Tulpa.
The small detail of him stepping onto that giant cushion gets me every time.
The best part.
same here, lol!!
All of television was leading up to this moment.
The entire universe has led up to this moment
What a great ending for Twin Peaks! I mean, I did think that Dale Cooper just bursting out singing was weird for a minute, but in the end nothing could have been more perfect :)
babba bababa lalala... lalaLAAA
infinitegut with that face he can says everything 😆😆😃

Agreed. It's the clear highlight of the song.
La LA LAAAAAAAA!
Lyrics:
OH, AH AH AHH - AH AH AHHHH OHH PORTLAND
YOU’RE SO BEAUTIFUL
HOOOO - HOOOOO, MY CITY, MY PORTLAND
ALL THE BIRDS, THE CRICKETS AND THE FROGS
THEY CHANT HER NAME,

THAT YOU AND I HAVE BEEN TOGETHER
YOU ARE MY DARLING GIRL, MY BEAUTY, MY PORTLAND
I KNOW YOU BEST OF ALL, YES I DO, MY PORTLAND
Did Rod McKuen write this?
@@RatPfink66 it was straight up improv, bro.
Yes, it was all improv.
i read on the fred and carrie AMA that they told him to improvise "literally anything"
You ARE my darling girl!
1:41 kills me every time Kyle MacLachlan is the best 😂😂😂
I love this song lol
Now that is one damn fine cup of anthem.
The crickets and the frogs LOL
This is definitely going on the “the funniest thing I had ever seen up to that point of my life” playlist
it's even funnier when you realize almost everyone on scene is trying damn hard not to break into laughter
instead of OkCupid I want an app called OkKyle so I can find my beautiful boy bride that is just like Kyle. thank you.
that's a mistake Damn. I’ve dreamt of this.
OkCooper?
Ah ah ah aaaah
Ah ah aaaaah, hoooh,
PORTLAND, you’re so beautiful
Hooooh ooooooh
My city! MY PORTLAND!
All the birds, the crickets, and the frogs
They chant her name!
Ooooh, her mountains so wide! So tall!
Bah bah, buh buh buh, la la la....
LA LA LAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
And when we’re on the streets
And you pull out a cigarette and say to me
Oh, Mr. Mayor!
Let’s go to your place I say
PORTLAND
Oooh I say
I thought you’d never ask
And I will.
La la la, la la la, la la, la la la la sing to me
HA HA HA!
And when I see the sunlight glint upon your bridges
It makes me think
Of all the times
That you and I have been together
You are my darling girl
My beauty
My PORTLAND
I know you best of all
Yes I do
My PORTLAND
this song gives me life
Yes. I definitely see the William Shatner influence here!
Haven't watched this in a few months, but I still laughed out loud. So good. "I thought you'd never ask..."
I've watched this video every morning for a year. It gets me through the day. Thank you Portland

I didn't want that to end. Ever.
No one dares to dislike the mayor
COOPER!!!!!! so he actually went crazy at the end of Twin Peaks and here is the result :)
Dale Cooper needs a singing career😍😂
Ma La He could .Superb voice
Kyle can plays keyboard and a little bit singing. I still bring a torch for this guy
It is evident?
This is my favorite song. I love it and I always will.
this is my favorite thing in the world
At first, I thought the line went "when I see the sunlight glint apon your britches" ha! Kyle Maclachlan is the man!
I have never wanted to visit Portland so much, due to this song! Love it!..........
This could not have possibly gone better XD
I cried the first time I saw this
It's like a lost Scott Walker hit.
This may be my favourite episode and this is the icing on the cake.
And he improvised the song too. Legend
I’m so glad someone said this. I was just thinking “is this a take on a Scott Walker song?”
yep, I feel it's inspired by TROLOLO to a degree
Gonna make this my ringtone.
This is freaking hilarious. I have to catch up on this. Too awesome.
It also seems like he's channeling Leland Palmer singing show tunes, for those who are interested in potential influences.
Agent Cooper fell in love with the Pacific North West, and became mayor of one of it's settlements.
Profoundly moving
He's so frigging likeable...
Been playing this pretty consistently during the Portland Trailblazers and La Lakers series
He's hypnotic. :-)
This is completely improvised
Max Goldberg Kyle can!
I Love this clip, he is so funny here.. My Portland.......la la la, la la la, la la
I just realized this guy played Paul Atreides in Dune. That makes me like this show even more.
Paul reincarnated as the mayor.
LA-LA-LA My Arrakis!!!
PURE GENIOUS. Love Kyle MacLachlan. Forever.
Didn't he improvise this whole thing on the spot? I read that once
yes he did

Still amazing
I loooove, love, love Kyle MacLachlan. He is one of my man crushes along with Dana Ashbrook. Both are handsome 🥰 😚.
this is basically an early scott walker song
The melody is GREAT, it's just the lyrics lol.
Alternate dimension where agent dale cooper becomes mayor of portland
This clip makes me want to watch Twin Peaks
my anthem to life
Let's rock!
That's Mr. C.
It should have been the Bene Gesserit rite from Dune.
pure genius
Shatnerian.
Kyle Maclachlan I love you but I'm so done 😂😂
Portlandia is not fiction.
this is beautiful
