    Hi James, my first car was a Mini too. I was 17 in 1973 and I bought a 1963 B reg 850cc with push button start on the floor and a gear stick that felt a yard long with two or three bends in it. I Hand painted it Blue with paint that won't show brush marks (liars) and White Starsky & Hutch go faster stripes each side. Had to ask friends to get out going up steep lane in Clent Hills for 50yds and drove home (Birmingham then) from Bournemouth as it was too hot (after 7 days) with my now wife of 38yrs with the heater on ALL the way home as the temp guage was going off the needle - HAPPY DAYS!

    Wow, James. Hearing your '1st Car Story' takes me back to mine n' all those same feelings. The freedom, the time alone, or with friends. And your comment about your 1st accident, so true! You learn SO MUCH from all those 'first's', in each of our lives. They shape us. For me it was an older model Honda Accord, manual. Such good times! Thx for this one, mate.

    Can't believe you uploaded this topic on my birthday! This made my day James! As it is my birthday my dad promised to take me on a parking lot (empty bug surface of course) and teach me how to drive a manual at 15 years old! We took grandmas 2015 Peugeot 208 as dad's btw is an automatic, and that car put a smile on my face when I shifted to 2nd gear for the first time in my life! I loved it! Can7T wait for more hope hatch videos from this tour!

    First car was an astra van circa 1988. My dad sprayed it in whitewash and when I hit a gate post we got a sledge hammer and sorted that dent. Excellent car to learn and play about with. Still remember my first drive after passing my test. 20 years later and 23 cars later I took my motorcycle test and enjoyed the speed of 1000cc plus bikes. Never underestimate the thrill of driving. Hope that's never taken away from us. 😀

    MINI's are great! My first car was a 2005 MINI Cooper S and I can still hear the sound of the compressor whining through the interior. Moved on (to a M135i) since then, but a MINI will always have a special place in my heart. If I'd ever have the luxury of owning multiple cars, a MINI would definitely be in the garage! Hey James. I passed my driver's test with my Mom's Toyota starlet in Uganda, which was a 4 door hatchback. However, my own first car was a 2 door hatchback Proton Satria which I had in Malaysia. I've had very similar memories with that car, such as driving about with friends, my first crash, numerous road trips, turning down the music to figure out what the unfamiliar noises were, late night trips to McDonald's for a snack and so much more. Sadly I had to sell the car after just one year. Memories of the first car are the most special ones....

    there is so much i can relate to when you say driving alone in the car to wherever you wish to is just one of those precious personal time we can get in this fast-pace lifestyle. For me, I would occasionaly park the car and just sit in the car with the engine off and that time of the day is just so calm that you wouldn't notice how fast time flies by.

  • @sethkline9989
    @sethkline9989 Před 6 lety

    My first car was a 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP 250 hp 290tq front wheel drive with straight piped exhaust. You could hear me coming from a mile away. Heads up display, faux leather seats and a big four door sedan. It was loud, shouty, comfy and it felt like it could go 300mph. First cars in the first years of driving is the best feeling in the world. Nothing but freedom and trouble.

    I passed my test at the start of this year, and I remember how absolutely ecstatic I was on the way back. Sure, my car was only a little 1.6 Micra but on that day it felt like nobody could be better off. It gets better though, learning more about the car's behaviour, it's character and even it's downfalls as you add more miles to your tally, in my case on the back roads on the University run!

I didn't go down the John Cooper Works path, I have a Stage 2 Mini Madness upgrade, sports exhaust, H&R suspension upgrade, wheels / tyres, big brakes etc. It wins my smiles per miles award and it takes a determined M3 to beat it in a stop light grand prix. I've never owned one so possibly a GTI comes close, but the best pocket rocket available in North America.

  • @CarObsession
    @CarObsession Před 6 lety

    Great stuff James! Passing my test feels like a long time although it wasn't THAT long as it was 2011. I passed first time with just 3 minors and my first car was a 2001 FIAT Punto ELX with a naturally aspirated 1.2 litre engine. It was good fun to drive (when it was working) and I too, had that cassette tape with the MP3 attachment.
    After around 9 months of having the car, it kept going wrong so in the end I got a brand new Renault Clio. The Punto was meant to be part-exchanged, but a week before I was due to pick up the Clio, the power steering went on the Punto. As a result, the dealer offered me next to nothing.
    So in the end I sold it privately and rather bizarrely, a chap came all the way from DEVON (I live in South London) to buy it, knowing that it had now power steering... I think I sold it for £350 in the end. I would love to know if it's still on the road, I still remember the numberplate, so when I see an old, rather battered Metallic Grey Punto, I always check the plate out of curiosity.

    Just two hours later I took my C3 to the hills with my grandpa in order to drive on the mountain-side roads that I’ve known since I was a child.. The C3 is now my daily for Uni and I still love it to death (beside its countless and I mean countless cons) thanks to the spec my grandfather chose and the fond memories
    Also love my father’s Civic, a true driver’s cars for its price-point! FK2 Sport
    I plan on keeping the C3 forever in my garage. Means the world to me and I hope to someday teach my son/daughter how to drive it just as my grandfather taught me in it

    Awesome James! I'm having the first car experience right now. I've owned a NB MX-5 for about 8 months now and yep, it's definitely the best car in the world. Just like you, I also had my first little accident in it ;) Rear got away from me once and I span in the middle of the road. Car landed halfway into a ditch :| Was fine though!

    I drive a 14 year-old Renault Kangoo. I can bring along a football team and dozens of fans or just casually 52(!!) crates of beer. Had the best memories with the worst soundsystem, the most comfortable gearbox in the world (I've driven about 35 cars by now, it's still my favourite!) And I always enjoy getting back into it. Now that's a memory I'll never forget!

    My very first car I bought just after i got my licens, was a Fiat Cinquecento Sporting. Especially the "sporting" is important! It was red, got red seatbelt and got sport-seats that were checkered. In danish tax- standards, the closest i could get to a Cooper. It was fun and raw - a real gokart with 54hp. It was laughter for almost 800 km - before everything went wrong.. A chaotic dream - or nightmare - of a first dream car. But I still loved that car for the personality. It was so much more special than the yaris I am driving now, even though the yaris is the best and most reliable car I could imagine. I totally get the feelings you got for the mini!

    *This will be a great series with the 3 of you! James I think Sam should take my 250bhp abarth out as I see he's back in the abarth again haha he loves the scorpion! You've seen my abarth at silverstone with the lambo calipers! I've dropped him a note to try get him to drive my car! Try to convince him haha*
