The Harlequins, or Rillietann, are a unique subset of the Eldar race, who split their time between being talented battlefield fighters and theatrical performers. They exist outside of normal Eldar society and hold no allegiance to any Craftworld, Kabal, or other form of authority other than to their own belief in the Eldar deity Cegorach, the Laughing God.

Yes, every time the Harlequins go to war its hope for humanity but the Imperium will remain extremely xenophobic regardless of what they have witnessed within the Galaxy. The Harlequins would have had to approach the High Lords and won them over by their amazing levels of charisma and comedic attributes. They made friends with the high Lords via Harlequin levels of humor.

You got it a bit backwards. Solitaires aren't doomed & so they play Slaanesh. They're doomed BECAUSE they play Slaanesh in the dance. She takes it personally & makes a special note to take their soul when they die & make them suffer. Cegorach cares for all Harlequins, but for a Solitaire he will actually face Slaanesh & try to take the soul from her. They have the saddest lives in 40k, because they know that if Cegorach can't save them, they'll have an eternity of suffering. That's why other Eldar are depressed around them (they're not blanks) - imagine how psychics would feel around some-one whose soul is literally marked for special treatment by Slaanesh. Think of them as the ultimate doomed goth.

Small lore bit, Solitaires are actually feared and revered in equal measure, they're cursed to be consumed by Slaanesh, but also they are the only Eldar that the Laughing God will fight for their souls.
The reason why they're so revered is that, they usually live as normal Eldar, hidden between the masses, and only show up when they're doing some mission for their god, or when joining a dance, which is actually extremely rare, it's so incredibly rare, that when a Solitaire appears, the entire troupe changes it's schedule and welcomes the Solitaire as a guest of honor, and then they perform the play of "The Fall", the main reason they can't play it normally, is because no one can play the part of Slaanesh, other than a Solitaire, so when one appears, it basically turns into a mandatory holiday for every Eldar, to go and see The Fall.
Essentially they are the only ones that can play Slaanesh in a play and not have their souls consumed by her, and the reason for the curse is that, it's believed that it's basically bad luck to talk to one, because Slaanesh :P

    • @Aizen2468
      @Aizen2468 Před 2 lety +23

You are almost entirely correct, but you kind of slightly twist the message of their appearance and what it means.
It is a holiday when one shows up and it's time for the play known as "The Fall."
.....but it's most certainly not a time of celebration or positivity. It's a time of mourning, sorrow, and reflecting on past mistakes.
When a Solitaire appears, they're not so much welcomed, as they are seen as their appearance being one of necessity. An important lesson that Eldar must never forget.
So, while I would say there is SOME reverence there, in that there is respect towards the being that chooses to play Slaanesh. An unbelievably courageous, and NECESSARY role.....I wouldn't exactly say Eldar view them equally with fear and respect. I think the fear far outweighs the other.
And I've never heard of them living amongst other Eldar. I always heard they keep to themselves, and stay far away from others, as to avoid the "bad luck" and curse associated with being near them. Is there a novel that discusses them living normally amongst the masses of other Eldar?

It's worth remembering that Slaanesh is the god of Excess not sex, drugs, etc like people often think.
Slaanesh is feared by the other gods because she may consume them, the excessive violence of Khorne, the excessive plotting Tzeentch, the excessive disease and sloth Nurgle.
Excess, on all it's forms, is Slaanesh domain. She was not born of depravity, but depravity taken too far into excess. Remember, the Eldar wanted for naught, they were indulgent at the time of the fall. That excess and indulgence was the important part, not the sex, drugs, or violence.
Now being excessively violent does double up and empower Khorne with violence and Slaanesh with excess, so multiple gods can be empowered by once... But that only means Slaanesh is getting a piece of everyone's pie.

The descriptions of Harlequin equipment make me wish we could see a really high quality animated story about them. Even just a short film. Something that would allow the animators to really flex their muscles. Harlequin players darting around the battlefield as a kaleidoscopic blur. Their face shifting form to jump scare characters. Casually exploding people.
Honestly, if you depict a Harlequin as just a dude with a static face mask, you have failed the assignment. Watching a Harlequin in action should be a _trip._
(Suffice to say, I don't expect anything from the Hammer & Bolter people. Not because they're bad animators, but because GW obviously doesn't care, and so neither do they. It is a work assignment at best, and one they plainly have no passion for. Not to mention no budget for.)

Not super successful irl but very cool concept. In my interpretation as fry why Cegorach was able to know how to escape the birth of Slaanesh and why he has the black library is because the concept of dramatic irony falls within his domain of godhood.

Isn't the Black Library the Akashic Records of the W40K universe, like the place where ALL the knowledge is hidden, from across ALL time?

No it's not, the black library is simply the storage place for all eldar tomes ND texts.

Harlequins. I could make a thousand Little Guys joke, but none of them would be on the level of the servants of the Laughing God himself

I got a Major sense of Deja Vu when Bricky said "but he's the Eldar's laughing god" "but he like a horror god at the same time" it wasn't until i remembered brick said these exact words in his 40k factions explained in the exact same way, at least for the first one. some things never change

Why does Slaanesh always lose at rock, paper, scissors? Because she always prefers to Scissor. Bumbumtsh

This channel always gives me a good laugh! Such a good escape sometimes into the 40k universe. Another episode well done! Also if anyone wants to hear some really good 40k stories check out "A Vox in the Void " narration! Great tales from the grimdark setting.

Shy pulled out some extra magic for this one. Not sure if it was using new software tricks, or less sleep than usual. Excellent work for sure though!

Introducing the shrieker canyon! Do you see jerry the guardsmen over there? Do you see his relatively clean compatriots? Well see them in this state no more because with this magnificent weapon you can paint them with jerry!

25:43 Bricky’s talking about the Black Library being like Dark Souls while I’m sitting here, having JUST walked into the Grand Archives in DS3. Spooky. 👀

Just on the Ephreal Stern thing, via her comic it's implied that ephreal is so powerful of a psyker that anti psyker measures are just overloaded if they attempt to stop her. It is also implied that this is because how she gained her powers is via the sacrifice of souls into her, and that it might be the same way the emperor gained his powers.
