    Ymir is a nordic mythology name.
    Specifically, it is the name of the original giant (or titan) from whom all the jötnar (giants) were born.
    Ymir's body was later used to create the world humans live in, as described in a poem:
    "Out of Ymir's flesh was fashioned the earth,
    And the ocean out of his blood;
    Of his bones the hills, of his hair the trees,
    Of his skull the heavens high."
    "Mithgarth the gods from his eyebrows made,
    And set for the sons of men;
    And out of his brain the baleful clouds
    They made to move on high."

      It is good that you quoted that, but it's worth noting that Ymir was not just the primal source for the existence of the worlds beyond the yawning void, Ginnungagap, but also all which reside amidst it; not only the Jötnar, but also because the gods are themselves the descendants of the primeval Jötnar, Ymir is in fact the wellspring from which all sapient life emerged, and was sacrificed to bring about a place outside the void wherein *all* life could dwell.

    Ymir is, in our world, part of Germanic/Nordic Mythology and was a Giant.

    I love that you watched and appreciated this OVA. A lot of people only remember about the No Regrets one, but this one actually brings so much info to the main story.
    5:35 after 1x15 a lot of fandom assumed Hange is “crazy and in love with titans”. But the truth is she absolutely hates them, but is willing to suppress this hatred in favour of research that will help them defeat titans. Everything she does comes from passion, for research too, for sure, but also to help humanity win. It becomes more and more prominent in s2 onwards
    7:13 it’s true we never saw Hange fight, but what we know for now based on episodes like 1x15 or this one is that she has CRAZY fast reflexes. She’s been studying titans and coming as close as possible to them, but never got eaten. she has been doing it for so long and knows her research so well she knows exactly how far she could go.
    General comment: a lot of changes in anime from manga made Hange seem as a irresponsible person that doesn’t care about her comrades safety; this is a complete mischaracterization, manga Hange never acts this way. if she is risking anybody’s life, it’s only hers

    In the manga the events of Ilses notebook were shown pretty early, right before Erens trial, when we knew so little about the titans.

      After learning that Freckels is also called Ymir and looks like Ilse a bit, I am now pretty sure there is an aspect of that here. =)

      @@storieswithstyleI'm assuming you're a bit ahead on season 2 so I'll mention something covered by s2 ep2... This is my gripe with people telling others not to watch Ilse's Notebook until after season 2 or later. Learning Ymir's (freckles) name is supposed to get the gears in your head turning. Especially with having watched Ilse's Notebook beforehand.
      I remember the first time I reached that part of the story, I was like, is this an alternate reality where Norse Mythology actually happened in their past? Ymir was also a character in Norse Mythology! And a lot more theories just appeared to me.
      As for the genetic memory thing, if you happen to have read Congo or other books by Michael Crichton, you will definitely love this show (if you haven't been loving it already).

    I love how this became a full-on horror episode. The way the music changed from suspense, to a moment of silence, to disbelief, to mystery, emotional breakdown, to then Ilse's impending doom. Like we know, Ilse's dead, we're just waiting for it to happen...

    So sad for that Titan. The human inside it seemed to know what was happening and intentionally led Hange to the tree. It sounded like it was crying at 20:03 too. Also, I believe its human form will make a cameo in the future, but you'll only notice him if you pay very close attention to the faces of the people.
