That last "F you" to the Charlotte fans by not drafting Scoot was wild. He's a horrible owner but is he as bad as Sarver was to my Phoenix Suns? Or Donald Sterling was to the Clippers? Eh BUT then again just imagine if Jordan had to deal with an owner like himself when he was drafted. Would he ask for a trade or just slug it out in Charlotte for 15 years?
At least Sarver and Sterling built contenders at some point
The Suns did make the finals with Sarver in charge and Sterling started the Lob City Era.
Jordan is just unluck, and jerry krahws is just luck. Being a great owner is just being lucky or unlucky. Thats it.

Funny enough, MJ said right after he bought the Hornets (then-Bobcats) that he will build a winner on his hometown team but unfortunately that's the one area he failed.

They've had a lot of bad NBA owners. Jordan was one of them. People act like they don't remember the Warriors before Steph, James Dolan (Knicks), Both of the Nets last two owners, T-Wolves all time, Wizards for decades, Donald Sterling (Clippers), Robert Sarver (Suns), my Pelicans (before Mrs. Benson), the Kings for 16 years. There are plenty.

Can't forget about Ted Stepien(Cavs owner in the early 80s)who loved to trade draft picks at every opportunity.
You can chalk Morrison up to injury too. His rookie year is the only year of his career where he was fully healthy; that ACL tear in the preseason of Year 2 destroyed any chance of improvement. He wasn’t great as a rookie, but he did have flashes of potential.
Plus he’s a diabetic too, which I’m just saying it’s incredibly harder to play basketball as one.

On another video I watched, the narrator pointed out that Jordan as a player was all about greatness. Not settling for anything less than the best, for both himself and his teammates.
As an owner, he clung to mediocrity like a life raft. As an owner he was afraid to fail, so he settled for being forgettable.

Charlotte was supposed to become a large market with MJ at the helm if they had been good he could have made more than that. The bucks could sell their team right now and make more than that because it was once a small market no one wanted to be they managed to change this within a decade. You guys just don't like to admit MJ the owner was good awful he literally picked Michael Kidd-Gilchrist even after his scouts suggested AD. Saying this has nothing to do with his status as the goat I know that's why people are jumping through hoops to make it seem like he won in the end.

We all see this everyday even at our workplace. A dysfunctional management builds a dysfunctional company, in this case a team. Barkley was right all along about MJ just having yes man around him.
I just want to preface my comment by stating that I recognize Jordan will be fine with his billions and his many income streams whereas I'm just some nobody with no money. With that said, Jordan's killer instinct is great on the court in a 5v5 where he can rely on himself first and foremost, but being a good manager means trusting those around you to do their jobs without micromanaging (and also letting go of perfection). It's fascinating how pure, generational talent in one area doesn't translate directly to another.
It's like all that stubbornness and iron will that made him so successful as a player is doing him zero favors as an executive. It'll be interesting to see if he can let go of it and adapt his killer instinct to work in this very different context. Frankly not holding my breath because at this point he'll keep falling upwards no matter what thanks to his incredible, well-deserved legacy.
To me the whole 'killer instinct' think is a joke. It appears in the most selfish players that see themselves above the rest. It only works if you are really goat material but it doesn't when you actually need to manage people and their personalities. Jordan probably only looked at the players potential and athleticism. He thought that if they worked hard like him, they could be great but they are not him, almost no one on this earth is a psycho like him lol @@youngminpark3173

I think there are two reasons why MJ failed as an owner. First off, as others on this thread have alluded to, he surrounded himself with yes men who never challenged him but also were terrible for front office roles. Secondly, I get the feeling Jordan wore out his competitive drive when he was a player. He was completely obsessed with winning as a player but didn’t seem to care anywhere near as much about it as an owner.
I can tell you an owner who is worse than Michael Jordan that for some reason very few people ever bring up: Chris Cohan.
He owned the Warriors from the mid 1990s until 2010 and during that time, the team only made the playoffs ONCE, which was the “We Believe” year, while the team constantly passed up future superstars in the draft and averaged low ratings in one of the biggest and most basketball-crazy media markets in North America…not to mention he was extremely cheap and never really bothered to pursue big name free agents and trades (he VETOED a trade proposal that would have sent KG to the Warriors instead of the Celtics!).

Basketballwise Sterling was terrible but at leaast he made money of his players and the team. MJ's aspirations are unclear. Looking to his picks it looks like he wanted to create a all-time legendary white center from no name, either he belived he has a notion what shadow freshman has potential to break out

ted stepien is by far the worst. sterling managed to own the clippers for decades, stepien pretty much destroyed the cavaliers in 2 years. he traded 2 firsts for a guy and then cut him after like 2 weeks, and that was only marginally worse than all his other trades

I don't think it's just the drafting that's horrible but also the development since the fact that they drafted Tobias Harris with a late pick but traded him meant that maybe some of these players would've been better if they were drafted to a different team with better development.
Overall your analysis was good but 2 things I vehemently disagree with you on.
1. Drafting Brandon Miller was a decision made by the front office not MJ. By that time, he didn’t give 2 shits about the organization, wasn’t involved with front office decisions anymore, and was ready to move on with the sale.
2. You make it sound like they drafted a bust over a superstar by passing on scoot. Both players are rookies and have not done anything yet in their careers. No way to tell whether or not they made the wrong pick until we reevaluate the draft years from now.
Honestly I have always thought that scoot was heavily overrated by fans and the media. He’s a terrible % shooter in a shooter’s league. Would not surprise me 1 bit if B-Miller turns out to be a better player than scoot.
Mario Lemiuex is probably the only superstar generational talent that became a great owner/management of a team after he stopped playing. I really feel that LeBron would be a great owner if he got the opportunity though

It’s Donald Sterling, for me. He was cheap, The Clippers would not get any better, and were the laughingstock of the league for DECADES until Lob City. Donald was also a racist that owned a basketball team in a predominantly black league. Look up the stories of Donald bringing in his groups to the locker room, so they could “marvel” at the black athletes bodies. I’m not making it up!

To me, I don’t think MJ is a worse owner than a racist and Donald was an awful owner as well that kept the Clippers down for longer decades. The Clippers franchise was practically begging for a new change of ownership, when Ballmer bought it.
As a Hawks fan, I have to say their ownership group in the 00s and early 10s was one of the worst. They were very cheap and content with being just good enough to make the playoffs. Eventually they sold the team because the group self destructed by suing each other
This really puts into perspective how valuable Phil Jackson was to that 6rings squad.
Everyone kept saying how MJ didn't start winning until Scottie was joined and after he's ready ready, however I feel like Phil was the most crucial cog in there.
Being able to fit in Rodman for the second three-peat etc was no easy task, MJ lacks the locker room and structure and being the leader.
Phil is THAT GUY.
Huge part of MJ's 2nd retirement is also because Phil wasn't gonna get resigned and hence MJ said he'll retire. Which led to him cutting his finger with the cigar cutter yada yada.
I think Jordan and that Bulls squad was talented enough to win eventually but a threepeat let alone two? Not without Phil.

As a NBA head from NC I’ve always passively rooted for the Hornets. During MJ’s tenure they had to All Star guards basically fall to them in Kemba and LaMelo. But other than that it’s been a whole lot of Ls. I don’t think he’s the worst owner ever but I do think he’s in the conversation. From a purely basketball decision making standpoint.
People should watch the documentary of Secret Base about this topic, "the men you pay to be in shorts" or something along those lines.

Bill Russell did not fail as the Sonics head coach. In fact let's not forget how successful he was as the player-coach of the Celtics. For the Sonics though, he made the playoffs twice. It was after they drafted Jack Sikma and brought in Gus Williams that made the Sonics into a championship team. Not to take anything away from Lenny Wilkens but the newly added players had a lot to do with the success the Sonics had after Bill Russell was no longer coaching.
*It was before Sikma, Gus Williams and Dennis Johnson huge development.

Yes. Yes, he is. Some owners don't give a damn and just want to say they own a basketball team and their teams stay in mediocrity because nobody really cares. MJ, unfortunately, actually thought he was making good moves and put Charlotte perpetually in the lottery with his terrible picks, trades, and signings. So I'm a Cavs fan and remember the lockout-shortened 2011-2012 year. Cavs were in the absolute dumps, win % was terrible and on track to be the worse in the NBA that year. But the one silver lining was that the Bobcats ended up having an even worse record! Thank you, Charlotte, for your sacrifice. No one remembers just how BAD the Cavs were because of you! (Everyone knew/knows we were bad, but not the extent lol)

MJ wasn’t a good owner, however he was FAR from being the worst. Donald Sterling has entered the chat. If you want to know why the Clippers have been around for 54+ years yet only made it to the WCF once and never made it to the Finals, he is the reason why.
Sterling still built good teams and drafted good players whether they won a chip or not…he had like 15 playoff teams in his tenure…Jordan in 17 seasons made the playoffs 3 times and was swept in two of those series the 1st rd and he never even built or drafted a superstar player…that’s 2 decades of absolutely nothing to show for…he’s 100% the worst owner ever

I'm dead serious, there may have been some type of espionage because damn there were so many bad decisions at every turn. There's no way that you can make that many wrong decisions and stay bad for that long
I think Charlotte is just a cursed market for the NBA. From George Shinn to Robert Johnson to Michael Jordan, it feels like this city will never have a good owner for their basketball team. The jury is still out on the current ownership but they'll need to do a lot of good to reverse that streak of bad to awful.
As for bad owners in history, before Sterling, there was Ted Steipen almost single-handedly killing basketball in Cleveland with bad trades, dumb comments, and just putting out a godawful product on the court. The NBA had to create a new rule and hand out comp picks to the new ownership just so the Cavs would be watchable again.
Funny how we believe someone who is brilliant in one thing will be brilliant in another. Magic, Vlade, Baylor, Thomas, Rambis just to name a few front office / coaches.
It's difficult to judge Baylor given Sterling was his boss and meddled in decisions.

Stepian & Sterling were so bad that the NBA had to step in, the NBA made the Stepian rule because of Stepian and the minimum cap because Sterling.
As for Dolan he took a rich & popular big market franchise who was a constant contender in the 90's and made it into a the the league laughing stock and a punching bag.
It's easy to fail as an expansion team in a small market the like Charlotte and thay didn't have a lottery luck, Jordan was pretty bad but far from the worst.

I respectfully disagree, when super stars just want to jump around and form super teams in big markets how is he supposed to build a team? All the small market teams take decades to get competitive. Once u land a decent piece they want to leave to a big market to compete.
The irony being that the NBA has only made that situation worse over the years with more and more salary restriction rules that prevent players from getting the most they possibly could in a free market; they can't even maximize the "Bird exception" contract that kept players re-signing with their original teams for years, so yeah - they go to where they can get the most winning and superstardom because they are banned from getting the most money.
I disagree, in my opinion, Ted Stepien still holds the worst NBA team owner of all time, trading away their first round picks in multiple yrs for a mediocre player resulting to NBA to step-in just to save the Cavs from falling apart.

Nowhere near as bad as Donald Sterling, not even close, but seeing the irreversible damage he's done to Jerry Krause image, its kinda satisfying to see Jordan fail to put a team together. Frank Kaminsky could have been solid but never given the real opportunity. His stats for 36 mpg, would have been 15 ppg 7 rpg.
The short answer to that question is YES
They have Lamello Ball it doesn't make basketball sense to draft Scoot unless you plan on trading one of them.
Jordan is arguably the GOAT as a player who apparently hated Jerry Krause for some reasons who did a good job assembling a team around him. Now he's the one building, nothing good happened. He basically looked down on team construction and looked up on "players wins games" mentality in which led to him having absolutely no idea on how to find those good players nor how to develop decent ones.
Nobody on the Bulls liked Krause. He did nothing to endear himself to the players and he and Phil Jackson hated each other. Who are the players gonna side with? Phil Jackson of course.

Now that he was in the position to make the decisions in team building, he had nothing to show for aside from his name as a player of the sport. This might be a way out there theory, but u always felt that perhaps Jordan ran and drafter the players he did in Washington so it made more sense to come back to play and was a good reason for him to. If they don't have talent, then it won't look weird or bad for me to come back. I just can't see how Jordan thought Brown was better than alot of players drafted after so I think it was on purpose.
