Yep, I got the Max-9 about 4 months ago and with almost a thousand rounds through it now, not one problem at all. One of the main reasons I bought it was the tritium and fiber optic front sight and that the slide is optics ready. Never shot with an optic red dot before and I bought the Holosun 407k x2 for it. Installed it about a minute and after zeroing it in at the range, I’ve grown to love the red dot. Once I got used to finding the dot from a quick draw, it’s way faster than iron sights because you’re only looking at the dot on the target. Nothing to line up, no “sight-picture” to struggle with. Ruger service is excellent. I bought a Single-Six in .17 HMR for my son. The first time we shot it the empty brass would not eject. I set to Ruger on a Monday after I called them that morning. On Thursday of that same week it was returned with an entire new cylinder.

I traded my Beretta FS 9mm that I've owned for decades for a new Ruger Max 9. I've never carried the Beretta concealed even though I've always qualified to do so because of its large size. Well, the Max 9 has far exceeded my expectations and it carries concealed IWB like a charm. I've fired 1000 plus rounds thru it now and it preformed flawlessly. Honestly, I'm blown away by the performance of this concealable firearm and love it. Well done Ruger!!!
I bought one. Dry firing at home I hated the trigger. Any side pressure at all and it would lock up completely. I bought a Galloway precision trigger for it and love it. Great little gun, I really like the sights.
I bought my Ruger two weeks ago. It's back at Ruger as of today. The slide will prematurely engage like you say. And it won't rack (the slide lock won't disengage) and the little take down window is broken. I've put around 350 rounds through it and started experiencing problems. A couple of years ago I purchased a new Ruger American Pro full-size .45 auto that I still have and love, just like the other Rugers that I own. However, my .45 had an issue (from brand new) where the slide would fail to lock back after the last round was fired. I called Ruger and told them that I thought the mag springs were weak, and they quickly sent me 2 new mags and a return label for my old magazines. I've never had a problem since and the Ruger customer service is 2nd to none in my opinion.
The shield plus it’s terrible to carry all day unless you wear an undershirt it rubs your skin raw. I appreciate the texturing on the max 9 grip for an EDC.
Love the gun, especially with the Hogue EC9s grip sleeve. Got mine from ShopRuger just to be sure of the right one. One trouble I've had with the LCP, LC9s Pro, LC9 AND the Max 9 is I need to almost break two thumbs to get the slide release to let the slide go forward. Actually did a little extremely careful file work on several of the used ones and ended up satisfied. I can't imagine why Ruger (I'm a fanboy) can't get it right. Yes, they release effortlessly with a little backward slide pull, but still ... I prefer all controls to function.
If I remember correctly it’s not considered a slide release, just a slide stop. At least on the LCPII you are supposed to pull the slide back, not depress the lever.
I'm picky! If a pistol doesn't fit my hand I won't bring it home. I tried a tiny 9mm that didn't fit my hand right. It tried to jump out of my hand every shot. I had to adjust my grip every shot and I got slide bite. The weird part is I have the same gun Springfield 911 in 380 and it shoots fine. That little bit of extra recoil turned it into the devil. 😂

I have the LCP maxx in 380. My slide wouldnt lock back with an empty magazine when manually pulling it back but would on the last round. All though the manual says thats normal. I called ruger & they sent me 2 magazines & those work as they are supposed to. They told me of a follower issue they had but not sure if they have sense fixed it. I bought the LCP maxx when it first came out.
I had the same issue. First 40 rounds the slide locked back 7 times. Then I noticed the take down window also broke during that trip to the range. Sent it to Ruger. Got it back and after 200 rounds no issues yet.
Excellent gun trigger everything about it top notch I've only Shield extremely difficult to load the magazine accuracy is not that good but the max 9 is right on good job Ruger
I bought mine in March 2022 and had the same lock back with loaded mag issue. I was getting a lock back stoppage every 6 shots or so. Took it apart and saw right away that the slide stop hold down spring was not long enough, not putting enough pressure on the stop arm. I made a longer spring and replaced it and problem was solved.
Bought the gun today and it came out so defective the bullets got stuck it’s so lose and when it’s loaded it doesn’t fully cock back , will be returning it tomorrow
Won this gun in a raffle for $20, my 8 year old granddaughter picked the ticket so I told her when she turns 21 it’s hers. She will be very familiar with it long before that. No issues with it. The only thing is that after about 50 shots the trigger starts biting my finger, gets uncomfortable. But hey, $20….it came with Hogue grips.
Hello, This is a question. Loaded with safety off, pull the slide back then shoot correct? And can shoot the whole mag after pulling slide back one time yes?
If I remember it was the Honest Outlaw that had it but he wasn’t sure that he might have hit the slide stop but soon as saw it it looked like what was happening to mine but mine was much worse. Plus mine would lock open with ammo still in the mag during live fire. Ruger replaced slide stop spring and it has worked fine since. The mags had to be replaced as well.
Ruger has great customer service my man. My sr22 pistol would light hammer strike and they fixed it free of charge and sent me a gun I’ll trust my life with!!!!
I just bought mine brand new last friday and shot the first 50 rounds & had 6 misfires because the disassembly pin cover is broken and I had to keep pushing the disassembly pin back into place.
I had the .22 rifle and the front site dropped off, then i had the SP101 and the cylinder would rotate by hand. Sure the customer service is good. Appears they have lots of practice.
HAVE HAD MANY RUGERS IN THE PAST ALL HAVE WORKED JUST FINE. BUT I HAVE CARRYED A GLOCK MODEL 30 45ACP FOR MORE THAN TWENTY YEARS AND HAVE ONLY SWITCHED EVERY SO OFTEN WITH A S&W SHIELD 9 AND A CANIK TP9 ELITE COMPACT EVERY NOW AND THEN FOR THE PAST FIVE OR SIX YEARS NOW. BUT IF I NEEDED A GUN THIS NEW SUBCOMPACT RUGER WOULD BE DEFINITELY LOOKED AT BEFORE I BOUGHT ANYTHING ELSE.
Everybody says they have no issues with their max 9, but I don’t understand - my straight out of the box max9 failed to cycle three times in one mag using fiochi ammo. Anybody have any ideas in why this is happening?
It's most likely the ammo. I noticed that when demand for ammo increased the quality of certain manufacturers suffered because they were trying to crank out ammo so fast. I have 4 boxes of fiocchi 9mm that is literally too big to fit in the chamber (out of spec), the same thing happened to me with a bulk box of Remington ammunition as well (neither one will fit into the chamber of any of my 9mm pistols). I'm willing to bet that if you switch the ammo to Federal you won't have any more issues.
@@blackrain6425 true, but to do that, they would also have to raise their price point. You pay $150 to $300 less for a Ruger compared to the other two you mentioned, but they do proper by their customers w great customer service. Like he said in the video, their production style lends itself to have a portion of a batch maybe has a bad spring. My Security 9 equates to the Glock 19 in size. I'm a first time pistol owner and haven't had a malfunction yet in two years. I've purchased $250 to $300 in ammo extra to get me to the Glock price point because I bought a Ruger.
Just bought mine less than a month ago and the slide release pin cover already broke after only 400 rounds and now I can't take the slide off. Now I have to send the damn thing into Ruger and wait to get it back. Ruger needs to step up their quality control!
Good pointers, my only Beefs with this new Ruger, is the lack of a Rail to mount illumination devices, as well as the Take Down Pin. Ruger needs to work on those issues.
I was about to buy one… but end up spending $200 for the Sig p365.. and I don’t regret it a bit. Besides that I already have an LC9s which I’m my opinion is way better gun that the Max 9 except the capacity is lower but the LC9s is great gun and very accurate for the size. I love my Sig and I switch them around almost every week..
@@PatriotSteve I don’t know about two years ago.. but mine has 400 rounds thru and 0 issues.. and many people have it that I know and so far no one has reported any issues to me.. so I don’t know about your joke..I have the P365 XL and I love it.. I recently bought a Glock 43X and let me tell you neither my Sig nor my Ruger have anything to envy from the Glock. My favorite is still the Sig by capacity and accuracy. I carry it all day with a 15 round mag.. Tye Glock shoot really good but so far I have only put 100 rounds thru..
Pretty sure you misstated the fact that it comes with both the 10 and 12 round magazines. The mags that come with it are both 10 round and just have a different base.
The twelve round magazine numbers to 10, but still holds 2 more rounds. I don't know why they didn't include numbers 11 and 12 on the magazine, but it does hold 12.
@@ShootWellAndOftenSWAO See if you can understand me. I was so set on getting a Max 9 and I had just watched a video that they tried to get it to limpwrist and could not. That is so important to me. Now, I'll just say thanks again; you did a great job and actually said a lot of good things about the Max 9. Have yourself a pleasant day and keep up the videos; you're one of the very best.
@@looseballs1966 Thanks for the info. I have a P365 but the reliability issues it originally had plus I can't see the small rear sights well at my age was reason enough to keep looking. I'm going to get a max 9; I liked the limp wristing test someone did; old people lose their grip. Thanks again.
i shot over 250 rounds i got no issue at all...loving this gun i admit it's more kick that other micro compact and a bit hard to shoot oh well it's my first ruger i will get used to it hahha
I sure hate to hear about the issues with that gun. I just bought one, have not shot it yet, and now I'm afraid it will prove defective. I should have read these comments before the purchase.
Wow, these situations suck. Sounds like a decent gun, of course ruger's customer service is great.. looks decent other than I strongly dislike that skinny very curved trigger still. Personally, I'll stick with the M&P line still. Just bought the Plus
I sent my Max 9 back to Ruger three times. Two times for a broken striker pin and broken sear on the striker. once for a take down latch door . Ruger told me it could not be repaired. Their sending me a new pistol. We ll see what happens. I had to get a new parmit because of serial number change and pay an extra 100.00 dollars. The service was ok but the pistol was not what i expected.
I never buy a new firearm model for at least six months to a year after it being released. Usually that enough time for the firearm manufacture to get the bugs out, that's unless their name is Taurus! Ruger customer service is probably the best of any firearm manufacturer?
This may be overkill, but I would still prefer if Ruger could add an accessory rail for a gun light. Otherwise, the fact that there are optics and cowitnessing fiber optics don't help if you can't see and clearly identify the target. Plus, a 600 lumen gunlight would disorient or temporarily blind anyone looking at the business end of the Max.
if you need a light, this is the wrong type of gun for you. The purpose of a micro compact is for quick draw close-in scenarios where a light is impractical.
@@deekay3064 Thanks for your opinion. The point of the Max 9 is for a primary every day carry gun that is LIGHT WEIGHT AND COMPACT enough to carry daily but also has ADEQUATE POWER, high capacity, and decent target acquisition, hence the fiber optic/ ironsights/optics ready slide cut. But what about the rare date night that you go out to the movies with your significant other to see the midnight premier of your favourite marvel movie? The MAX 9 is great if you are in a daytime gun fight but you don't always get to choose when you have to use a gun. A dark room with no sunlight almost voids the whole point of having fiber optics or a red dot. Those sight systems allow you to acquire a target and aim. But a weapon light allows you to identify the target. Before that movie shooting I never would have cared about a gun mounted accessory light. I didn't even edc. My understanding of every day carry may be different than yours. I choose to carry small tools for portability and system integration. I also operate on different philosophy of use and levels of preparedness and redundancy, that two is one and one is none. When I carry a fanny pack it is for back up. My primary pistol is for security and defense. But I would prefer a couple of 9mm pistols that were also higher capacity and had all sight and targeting options. I carry two of everything in my fanny pack. Regardless of whether it's a micro compact anything, be it a pen, notepad, compass, rape whistle, signalling light, small sewing kit, chapstick, lighter, firestarter, rain poncho, mylar blanket, 20' spool of 550 paracord, duct tape, water bottle, small bag of snacks multitool, handheld light, first aid med kit/IFAK/trauma kit/tournakits, two tampons, two maxi pads, keys, mace spray canisters, zip ties, and two "tactical folding knives" with seat belt cutter glass breaker, small handguns with iron night sights, and a laser, of the same model with extra mags. All of this fits in my fanny pack. I have two of everything in case one goes down/is defective/breaks/gets lost. Or if someone is around to assist. The reason I want a micro anything is for edc. Check out NUTNFANCY's "Obligation to Carry" " The Sheepdog Concept" "Fear no Evil" videos. Basically check out all his videos playlist. Especially Life philosophy and preparedness, EDC, and gear check. I used to carry the lcp2 but now that the LCP max is out I will integrate that into my edc instead. I am not criticising you when I say that I think you are under prepared. Because I rarely need the first aid/trauma/tournikit/ifak kit, never needed either the tampons or maxipads but if I'm ever in a mass shooting casualty situation I want to either be able to protect myself or treat someone's wounds or hand my wife or kids an extra gun or two. Thank God I have never been in a shooting, but I have been on an airplane when someone suffered a medical emergency and I was the only person who initiated CPR and I was also the first on scene to a few fatal car accidents and I am only a civilian. I was not able to save any lives but did render aid. I also started integrating some pocket sized Bibles and prayer cards. You never know when your going to need something or what you will need. But it's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. Beside, when seconds count, the cops/EMT 's/ help are (usually) just minutes away.
@@MrKruger2 I'm actually partial to the Security 9 because it is so similar to the LCP MAX except that it has an accessory rail and shoots 9mm. My only hesitations are that it lacks the optics ready slide cut and the rear sight is not squared off for one handed racking.
Decent gun but built very cheap! Take down pin is a joke, slide wiggles a lot, mine rattled in my pocket with both magz. Dry firing it sounded like a cheap toy. Sold it
Had the same issues with my LC9S Pro, multiple failures, and total failure at200 rounds, this gun looks like like my LC9S Pro with a fancy slide and larger capacity. Not the best gun Ruger ever made good luck, imho
Try with your trigger finger on the side of the trigger guard and a quick move to the trigger to fire. You'll find the trigger locked due to putting pressure on the actual trigger before the drop safety.
I like ruger but it seems like they did a crappy job with this gun. It was a cheap hurry up get it to market gun.. the trigger is horrible. With all the problems I have been seeing it made me feel like the max 9 was not reliable enough for me to carry.. customer service is the best hands down. No one beats rugers customer service. But I sold the ruger due to that unpleasant feeling of my gun not working when I need it. So I got the glock 48
I find it strange that the reviewer had the time to make a video stating that his gun had issues, but he didn't have the time to actually show the issues when they happened. Oh well. Future will tell if this gun is a lemon, or it actually represents a true sample of this gun design.
I see and hear about more and more issues. Trigger locking up, take down gate breaks due to the slide lock spring, slide holds open with ammo still in the mag, sights off, mags hang up. I can’t see why people accept Trash and think it’s normal to have to send a NEW gun back for repairs. I’ll keep my Glock 43 with the +2 magguts. 8+1 is in a gun that works is better than 12+1 when the gun malfunctions.
Shot mine and before I shot the first box broke with the same slide issue. The lady told me that it’s an issue with the spring provider/supplier. It’s the second issue with a Ruger since my wife’s LCP II (extractor/ springs/ and other unknow parts) came apart within the first 30 shots. Ruger quality is going down the drain and what’s with my trust in their products. Ruger is becoming the new Remington.
The price point means you have leeway to get it ported by Mag-na-port for just $167. And you can afford a good optic too. I called and spoke with Mag-na-port so that is why I have a specific price for porting the Ruger Max 9.
It's nice others like this Shield plus are coming down now. 440 Ford The Shield Plus now care. Which is worth it too many, Timmy. Much better trigger, tighter Etc. Course you don't get the Optics ready, which I'm not ready for yet anyway
I'm sure it's a very fine design. But all of these comments about "minor" problems that require sending it back to the factory make me think that this excellent design isn't very well executed. Well, concealed carry guns are for critical self-defense applications, which means that ANY failures have a strong potential to result in death for the good guys and victory for the bad guys. So, whatever the problem is, and no matter how "minor" it supposedly is, no thanks!
Any gun can malfunction. In this case he would've been able to fire a first shot but would have to pull the slide back and then release for the second. It probably could've resulted in death but it's better than a full on jam like some guns have issues with. Thankfully he only needed springs and mags replaced. Common stuff.
@@ShootWellAndOftenSWAO I think they will rugers customer service is far better then some of the others I’ve dealt with luckily for me it’s not a carry piece I just bought it to compare to all the other micro 9’s

I called ruger & they sent me 2 magazines & those work as they are supposed to. They told me of a follower issue they had but not sure if they have sense fixed it. I bought the LCP maxx when it first came out.
Does anyone know if the Vortex Venom RDS will work on the Ruger Max 9?
Bought the Max 9 two weeks ago I will get her to the range tomorrow
Congrats. Hope you like it
Mine has been flawless. Love it
I had the same issue.
I love Ruger rifles but I've never had good luck with any of thier semi auto pistols.
No issues with mine, either. I wonder if they got a group of bad parts from a supplier?
What's the name of the ammunition you were using when you were having problems?
Just purchased one for my wife yesterday. Should have it in a couple weeks.
I went with the G21.. 😁
Mine does jams a lot at the range with hp and also do not like the rusting issue that none of my other pistols have on the slide
😐
Got over 1000 rounds out of mine multiple different rounds shoots amazing
you mention that you had a lock back issue - mine does too - you mentioned you saw other videos where guys had issues - do you remember who made them?
If I remember it was the Honest Outlaw that had it but he wasn’t sure that he might have hit the slide stop but soon as saw it it looked like what was happening to mine but mine was much worse. Plus mine would lock open with ammo still in the mag during live fire. Ruger replaced slide stop spring and it has worked fine since. The mags had to be replaced as well.
Slide locked back on Justin Opinion also.
I just went to the range and the first shot the problems starting occurring. Ima gonna contact ruger on monday.
Sorry for the trouble but Ruger should be able to fix it quickly.
That was a slick way to get free mags!!
Ruger has great customer service my man. My sr22 pistol would light hammer strike and they fixed it free of charge and sent me a gun I’ll trust my life with!!!!
No issues with mine and over 300 rounds
I've had mine for 2 months I ran 800 rounds out of it no issue . One of the best small compact guns iPad
I love my Rugers. Even our dog is called Ruger. Grandpa taught me BUY AMERICAN!!! For America 🇺🇸!!!
What is the weight of this pistol ?
I've had absolutely NO ISSUES with my Max-9. Do you have video of your issues? Most reviewers film them testing the guns.
I just bought mine brand new last friday and shot the first 50 rounds & had 6 misfires because the disassembly pin cover is broken and I had to keep pushing the disassembly pin back into place.
trying to discredit him?
Even one issue is too many issues.
Out of my 350 rounds through it so far it has locked the slide back with ammo still in the mag about 25 times. Time to send it in.
Sorry to hear that.
Every manufacturer has issues, glad Ruger excelled in customer service, makes all the difference for sure?
Very True
Ruger
will never get be a glock or Sig p320
Please compare it to the Ruger Security 9.
It’s smaller, there ya go
Good pointers, my only Beefs with this new Ruger, is the lack of a Rail to mount illumination devices, as well as the Take Down Pin.
I love my Sig and I switch them around almost every week..
why... the Sig 365 was a joke for two years with all the problems it had/has
@@PatriotSteve I don’t know about two years ago.. but mine has 400 rounds thru and 0 issues.. and many people have it that I know and so far no one has reported any issues to me.. so I don’t know about your joke..I have the P365 XL and I love it..
Yeah I had not one problem my max9 is bad ass!!! I ran serval hundred rounds and even unloaded fast its a wicked little carry conceal!
Nice clear explanation and review. That’s a good price where did u get it from?
Georgia Gun Store
@@ShootWellAndOftenSWAO is that in Gainesville? I'm down in Buford, and I think I'm gonna give em a call!
@@Gruuvin1 yes it is
Pretty sure you misstated the fact that it comes with both the 10 and 12 round magazines. The mags that come with it are both 10 round and just have a different base.
The twelve round magazine numbers to 10, but still holds 2 more rounds. I don't know why they didn't include numbers 11 and 12 on the magazine, but it does hold 12.
Do you work for Springfield, or Sig? Thanks for your input.
I don’t work for nor am I associated with any gun company.
@@ShootWellAndOftenSWAO See if you can understand me. I was so set on getting a Max 9 and I had just watched a video that they tried to get it to limpwrist and could not. That is so important to me. Then I saw your video; you did a fantastic job pointing out some negatives but it just sort of burst my bubble and now I'll keep looking. Most of the micro's have some problems such as reliability.
Does the slide rattle on empty?
A tad but shoots excellent. Put safety on and rattles less. I'm more interested in how it shoots.
Yes.....but does it "rattle" when you shake it?
i shot over 250 rounds i got no issue at all...loving this gun i admit it's more kick that other micro compact and a bit hard to shoot oh well it's my first ruger i will get used to it hahha
Ergos are a weak on the ruger pistols imo. I have a lcp 380 that is a perfect pocket pistol but other than that not wild about ruger semi autos.
Billy! Mom always said, You Break everything You touch!
I sure hate to hear about the issues with that gun. I just bought one, have not shot it yet, and now I'm afraid it will prove defective. I should have read these comments before the purchase.
It’s been awhile since this review. It should be good to go by now.
Wow, these situations suck. Sounds like a decent gun, of course ruger's customer service is great.. looks decent other than I strongly dislike that skinny very curved trigger still. Personally, I'll stick with the M&P line still. Just bought the Plus
it's is some Great options out here.. I prefer the Hellcat myself and after watching this video, I'm glade I got it
Yes there are definitely a lot to choose from.
Can't go by one video. That being said I have a Hellcat as well and a Sig p365 and Sig p365 xl. Bought a Max 9 Friday. Love them all
: you probably broke the mag release spring out of monotonous
boredom being you couldn't shoot
it immediately..
No issues with mine
I never buy a new firearm model for at least six months to a year after it being released. Usually that enough time for the firearm manufacture to get the bugs out, that's unless their name is Taurus! Ruger customer service is probably the best of any firearm manufacturer?
This may be overkill, but I would still prefer if Ruger could add an accessory rail for a gun light. Otherwise, the fact that there are optics and cowitnessing fiber optics don't help if you can't see and clearly identify the target. Plus, a 600 lumen gunlight would disorient or temporarily blind anyone looking at the business end of the Max.
That’s why I went with Ruger Security 9 Compact
if you need a light, this is the wrong type of gun for you.
@@kenfan5666 if you add the optic plate then it will be optics ready
Decent gun but built very cheap! Take down pin is a joke, slide wiggles a lot, mine rattled in my pocket with both magz. Dry firing it sounded like a cheap toy. Sold it
Had the same issues with my LC9S Pro, multiple failures, and total failure at200 rounds, this gun looks like like my LC9S Pro with a fancy slide and larger capacity. Not the best gun Ruger ever made good luck, imho
Fired one the other day, I think I’ll keep my shield 9. Not impressed.
Try with your trigger finger on the side of the trigger guard and a quick move to the trigger to fire. You'll find the trigger locked due to putting pressure on the actual trigger before the drop safety.
What
Was told to learn how to pull properly. From aftermarket trigger company.
So your suggestion is dont buy this gun ?
I never have hiccups at all
Mines perfect, better than Glock for me I hate Glocks feel especially the 43
The price point means you have leeway to get it ported by Mag-na-port for just $167.
Ruger has great customer service... plenty of practice 😂
Production of this gun is still fairly new. The p365 had problems for years and now it's considered as good as the shield
I just got off the phone with ruger I’m sending mine back he striker was broken before I ever even fired the pistol
Hope they make it right for you.
@@ShootWellAndOftenSWAO I think they will rugers customer service is far better then some of the others I’ve dealt with luckily for me it’s not a carry piece I just bought it to compare to all the other micro 9’s
I get your point...but the LCP Max is hammer fired, it has no "striker", just a firing pin assembly.
@@johnstaley6568 who’s talking about the lcp max?
@@boredricanveteran9433 I stand corrected.

If Ruger turnaround the same day kinda tells me they dont get alot of guns back for warranty.
Lmao they didn’t even look at it they just sent it back
The ruger Max 9 is just like the lc9s it just holds more around the same little Lame slide hold back catch same little annoying safety same sorry way to take the gun down and it has a horribly more pitched trigger toward the front of the gun you better not wear gloves if you plan on shooting it I think I'll pass thank you for the video
Not everything made going to be perfect u just got one with a issue
After watching several review videos of this firearm I've decided to go with the Taurus G3C with a optic cut.
That’s a shame
