Socrates’ Philosophy for Physical Exercise | Xenophon's Memorabilia

  • Physical education and cultivating a good body obvious takes time and effort, with the decision to work out not being so simple for some. This video showcases Socrates’ arguments for working out and getting an athletic body in Xenophon’s Memorabilia.
Socrates argues first that there are no downsides to having a good body. It is pretty difficult to come up with negatives with a good body as opposed to positives. One might object that a good body requires time and effort, but that’s a downside regarding the means of acquiring a good body, not the body itself. Even if we consider the time and effort requirements, it’s possible to view these in a positive light, noting the mental health benefits associated with putting in that time and effort.
Socrates concludes with a final popular quote about realizing our full potential in the realm of our physical body. Although it seems like an impossibility to truly acquire the best body we could possibly have, simply by trying we’re able to see our achievements manifest themselves physically.

I think Socrates' 2nd point is actually his strongest. Even when doing something as non-physical as simply thinking - your body is responsible for giving your mind the best possible foundation to work off. When you're not fit and healthy, your mind will also suffer.

Defining what you eat determines whether you are a greater being guided by mind or whether you are guided by impulse; the reason is that Ethics, Morals and intelligence all have a say in choosing what you eat and define who you are, and it is intelligence ethics and morals which define whether you are a greater being or not, bringing you to exercising superiority in action in everyday life there wher you wish to be a superior being.
A vegetarian or vegan for egsample shows that, because of ethics and morals, that he / she has a greater mind, even if through sacrifice (which is a virtue) the individual harms himself by choosing not to harm beings that have a higher cogitative faculty and decidind for the devouring of more stupid beings, through a RATIONAL choice.
The reason for this is that by harming stupid beings (less complex beings) you should in theory benefit the world more for more complex being SHOULD have the tendency to serve creation better. Of course this could be an argument for Cannabilism - there are quite a few politicians and priests and criminals that SHOULD end up in the butchers shop and on our plates as a delicatessen.

Working out helps you improve both physical and mental health, there're even studies that show how working out can boost your intelligence, I completely agree with Socrates quotes, also because working out has helped me a lot during my life, it's amazing how some activities, even the simplest ones like running or jumping, can make you feel way better with urself at the point of helping deal with depression, anxiety or other physical/psychological problems, even though I'm only 17, I'm only comfortable with my life because of my efforts working out that made stable and happy mentaly (and ofc, philosophy helps me plenty too). I don't see a reason not be physically fit and capable. There are so many lessons that are taught through applying yourself on the physical side of things. Having a healthy body will also only help support a healthy mind, and vice versa. I personally think that, in most cases, the arguments against being physically capable and fit are to justify one's mediocrity and unwillingness to try/ work hard. I don't mean that in a way that is talking down to people. Obviously there can be lot of factors outside of people's control, but you shouldn't be using them as excuses to not try.

Consider the way exercise facilitates blood supply to the brain, a healthy balance of hormones, neurological stimulation and freedom from the (often seriously powerful!) distractions of pain and discomfort. One of the worst things about aging, you will realise if you don't look after your body, is how you can't immerse yourself in activities like you used to because deterioration in the body.

It's better to work out so you can live longer even if you won't be able to maintain that body, than not working out and die yonger, get a lot of health problems both physically and mentally and regret not working out when you were younger so you could maintain a more stable and satisfying life and health in the future. The point here is not "tether our happiness on wealth, beauty, social status or health", but feel satisfied with your progress and efforts to keep a good, long and enjoyable life, not for the others, but for yourself.

@@SneakySteevy search on google "Does working out increase life span?" And you will find the answer, also, yes we can not know when are we going to die because death may come on the most unexpected way. Now about the athletes, many of them do doping when practicing sports or exercising, that's why they die in the same range of age as non-athletes people. There are several studies confirming that people nowadays will live longer than people in the past, mostly because of improvement in public healthcare, nutrition, medicine, vaccinations and physical care. The video "Did people use to look older" from Vsauce explains about longer life expectancy well, if you want to give a look. So a lot of young people who workout are examples of life span increase, they just haven't got old enough yet to be a definitive evidence, however, they will.

    Some comments:
Reasons against going to the gym:
Virtue destroys the mind - its one of its problems - continuos repetition leads to stupidity. A routinary 8 to 5 job has a similar effect.
Consider - there is not much effort the mind makes when lifting weights but there is a lot of grunting.
Intelligence also makes it harder to go to the gym. Intelligent - intelligere - to perceive. Intelligence perceives the pain of the single exercise and of the repetitions and tends to refuse pain and discomfort leading to a block in gymnastic activity. In order to go to the gym you need to silence the brain and this can have an effect on intelligence and cogitative faculty.
A stupendous virtuos body is hard to sustain - after a couple of decades it has the tendency to fall to pieces and affect the health of the gymnast negatively.
It takes so much time and effort to have a stupendous body that you might neglect other aspects of your life
Reasons for the gym (same arguments as those presented in the video):
Great sex life when you are young ( I confirm).
Health and energy in the body for your other activities.
A stupendous body can help in other aspects of your life (if you are an actor, a politician, a priest, etc).
Personal satisfaction that makes you feel great for the mere fact you look great.
    Conclusion:
Many of the advantages of going to the gym can be obtained with a Good thought out diet. You don't get a six pack but you get an acceptable body which doese not shine but permits you sex and healthy living, and this without harming the mind . . . .
. . . . for that reason I council against going to the gym and in favour of a good diet (personal experience corraborates) that is formulated with KNOWLEDGE, not only heresay. My mother ruined my beautiful body with her influence.

    • @tomdenholm4896
      @tomdenholm4896 Před rokem +5

This is a remarkably poor take.
      1) Diet alone doesn't give you a *capable* body. Without exercise, your muscles lose their abilities, your heart and lungs become weaker, etc.
Someone who is "in shape" is more capable of work than someone who is not.
And onto your initial criticism - the repetition of exercise does not dull the mind. Forcing oneself to endure discomfort in order for long-term gain is developing resilience and discipline. These are good qualities for the mind to have - the ability to consciously push beyond adversity is not a skill that is gained from thin air, it needs to be practiced.

    • @lorenzocapitani8666
      @lorenzocapitani8666 Před rokem +1

@@tomdenholm4896 You are not on the moon or in space where exercise, with current knowledge we have, is required necessary - On earth, the body was not built (has not adapted to) to lift up weights senselessly - everyday regular activity is sufficient to keep you going, this even with the apalling diet they have in the western world where the average LIFE EXPECTANCY has been going up notwithstanding the sedentary lifestyle of the population, thus there is reason to say that longevity and health have little to do with exercise.
Regarding your second point: the brightest and most intelligent period of life of a human being is when he is a CHILD, not when he is and Adult. Intelligence declines with age as humans stop playing and using immagination and start instead doing repetitious activites such as Work or the GYM.
Play and games stimulates the immagination and the mind giving it the diversity that permits it to grow - from childhood fables we pass to precise scientific formulas and our minds are destroyed by the aridity of the activity we exercise as adults.
Doing an 8 to 5 standard job destroys immagination just as passing your afternoon three times a week in the gym or Jogging in the park. Its all empty minded activity that destroys the intellect, for to exercise it well you have to SUPPRESS the intellect.
When you pant you basically tell your mind to continue an exercise even if its against what your intelligence says - thats stupid and ultimatly intelligence is destroyed if ignored. Good logic.
Discipline destroys the mind for it eliminates options in order to give a result - Rebellion and creativity enhance possibilities for contantly new paths are explored which is wise and intelligent.
