Exercise is one of things that massively helped me deal with my depression. I get why it's hard to start. It was reallly hard for me to start. But nothing is more painful than hating yourself and your life and getting used to your misery. Sadness can be addictive but once you're on the outside, it feels like you escaped a cult and it's terrifying thinking of going back. Exercise IS the answer to SO many people's mental health problems. It won't help everyone but it is worth everyone trying
So fucjin true. I need to fucjin know this by now every time depression eats at me.
Richard Voss same bro started today lets do this!!
exercise has almost singlehandedly got me off 12 years of heroin and methadone addiction. it is extremely pwoerful, unfortunatly other addicts i know wont or feel like they cant exercise. once you feel even in your shit situation that you see some sort of improvment in anything at all, no matter how small it starts momentum joe talked about in the right direction..
Same, i think exercise helps with depression because its a tangible improvement you can see in yourself, and know you can always get better is helpful
You're speaking the truth. Weightlifting was the gateway to the improvement chapter in my life.
Came here during the great quarantine of 2020 seeking motivation for a home workout
Haha, same here!
Same
Yup
Yeah and they talking about gym. Gym and home is big difference 😅
Did it work?
Took me a minute to learn that working out wasn't chasing a look or getting ripped, but it was chasing a feeling. A feeling of greatness. A feeling of positivity and progress. When I exercise I feel so much better and happier and that's what I've been chasing!
It's a beautiful thing!
Well said... I know exactly how that feels! We're all gonna make it brah! 💪🏻 Let's goo!
I’m a regular gym goer, have been for a few years now, my issue is every now and then I’ll get a wave of no motivation where I don’t go to the gym for a week or 2

This comment was obviously regarding Americans. And yes, you can get fit without a gym membership. Thanks. Stay healthy!

Just finished my first workout in 10 years
Edit:
6 months milestone: that was the best decision of my life.
Edit 2:
12 months milestone: although things has been tough during Corona, but I have managed to keep my workout going at home with dumbbells. My current fat level is 19% and although I still have a long road ahead but I have never felt better mentally and physically in my life.
Thanks everyone for your encouragement replies and likes. Keep pushing ✊🏽

For those asking about updates below here is a 3 years milestone one. I am still going strong and not planning on stopping anytime soon. Working out has become an essential part of my days that I can't remember how life before lifting weights was.
Thank you for asking and hope y'all are killing it out there🏋♀
That’s sweet bruh. Been starting working out seriously for the first time in 6 years. Try joining a boxing gym. Even if it’s just title boxing. It’s amazing cardio but with you arms. So if you get tired of running you can go and punch things
Thanks for the encouragement guys!
It's day 10 and despite all the DOMS and the strains I am still going strong. Good luck y'all with your battles, keep pushing!
Congrats. You watched this video on my thirty-first birthday.
@@Lucid_Waking Thanks and happy birthday bro, hope you enjoyed it.
YES, Ahmed!! Congrats brother! Keep goinggggg!!!
I’m 17 and started working out 5 months ago... trust me when I say, after you see the littlest bit of progress you’ll be obsessed
Edit: 18 now and still going strong, the hardest part is motivation, even to this day i get unmotivated and have a dry patch but as long as you stay on the path you’ll be okay
I'm in near the exact same situation as you, I'm 17, I lost 48 pounds after being pretty overweight. I became skinny and then started working out to beef up a little, I started lifting weights as well as performing bodyweight exercises, I've gotten pretty good results but the last few weeks I've just... lost all motivation and drive to workout, nothing motivates me anymore and I seriously struggle everytime I workout to keep going
Juan Caesar I fell into that same weird unmotivated funk about 2 weeks ago... maybe cause it’s summer and I’ve been distracted with friends, girlfriend etc... but sometimes you just gotta look at the hard truth and say “do I wanna get out of shape again, do I wanna wait till I’m 35 and be mad that I didn’t get in shape when I was young and more able to do it” cause if you don’t get into shape when your young it’s a lot harder to do it when you older and have more responsibilities.......so it’s either get back in the gym and do it 2x harder or get fat and sad 🤷♂️🤷♂️😂😂 Don’t worry tho, many people get into a funk but it’s easy to get out of
@@jackhancho8571I appreciate the comment my dude, wasn't expecting such a fast response. I'm trying very hard to keep up and get rid of this attitude but its difficult lol. I can physically see so many good results from what I've been doing and every part of me knows I need to carry on, it's difficult though. I'm literally forcing myself to muster the energy and motivation to workout right now
Juan Caesar if you don’t have enough energy you need to look at your diet.... drink preworkout (I recommend g-fuel) drink protein... drink lots of water eat healthy and get 8 hours of sleep..... and try listening to motivational pumped up music....... you probably do all of those but if you haven’t then there’s your problem
@@jackhancho8571 yeah I do all of these, I have a strict healthy diet with supposedly enough calories to have the energy to workout, I sleep well, drink plenty and ensure I provide myself with enough time to rest and repair, it's not really a physical thing it's more of a mental thing, I was also obsessed for months, I felt unstoppable and amd amazing, even people around me were encouraging and supporting me after they saw the results, but suddenly I just woke up one day and didn't feel it anymore. I'm going to keep at it and push myself, think I'm just going through a rough patch. Thanks man
man i gotta quit my bullshit and start working out
do it.....but not just tommorow, just do it i promise you, i PROMISE, you will be happy and confident and make others happy, trust me on that, truuuuus me!

Have you joined the gym yet?
ilovetodraw555 same. It will happen.
I always feel like shit after working out! Like nauseous, weak and jittery. I used to work out a lot and it was always the same thing. I did it despite the way it made me feel, not because of it.
People just like being comfortable..that's why most people are unsuccessful

I'm going to give this a go. I was given 12-14 months to live in February, because of a grade IV glioblastoma brain tumor. I don't know if I'll fall into the 75% who don't live longer than a year. The odds are against me, but that 25% has to filled with those who didn't. I'm going to get in as good shape I've ever been, with however much time I have left.
And what Joe Rogan says is true. Whichever route you take, slacker or doer, your brain rewards you either way. Only the healthy route is free of guilt and remorse that come with letting your body go to shit. I'm nearly 20 lbs overweight. I'm confident that I can complete some of these 30 day challenges, and get into shape.
Thanks, Joe Rogan.
god bless you dude. i hope you are in the 25%.
Best of luck
Goodluck dude!!! Wish you the best!!
I Wish you the best 🤞🏾

I developed this mentality of not feeling good when skipping gym
The trick is to turn it into a lifelong lifestyle
And not look at progress
Same *hi5* missing the place so much :(
That's what most people don't get. You have to make exercise part of your lifestyle; feeling that crunch, that physical strain is a good thing, it means you're putting yourself on the path. If you persist and make it a part of you, you'll not only be physically stronger, but you'll also be less oppressed to doing things that need done in general, you'll be more positive mentally, and have more energy.

This is so spot on, after I really dedicated myself to working out it probably took me 6 months before I looked forward to working out and became my happy place. For those who are starting just stay disciplined and don’t rely on motivation, one day it’ll switch.

I got an ad about the science of motivation for this video. Its moments like these that remind you that nothing you do is private.
James did you know you can turn off the feature used to track your interests to maintain your "privacy"? Or the do not track feature available on literally every browser available?
It's moments like these that remind me how much of an idiot some people can be.
Bottlekap you start off nice like you're going to explain how to turn off tracking for devices but ultimately just call him an idiot. Rise above, people.
Travis Havemeyer yes, yes I did.
James it’s odd because literally last night I was putting notes in my phone about being more motivated to do better at track, work more, and just do better in school. I thought the video was great but it was a weird coincidence

honestly, i think the reason this is so effective is because it motivates you, but it doesn't motivate you too much. it doesn't give you ridiculous expectations. instead, it makes you believe that you can do it, and it makes you motivated to change for the right reasons. it doesn't give you false hope. it gives you that push that you need. nothing more, nothing less.

Workout is probably one of the very few things, if not the only thing, can bring only positive change to your life, the more you workout, the more positive change you can see on your body. Your job might fail you, your relationship might fail you, but workout won't.
It can be really hard to just start off from scratch, especially if we have never done it before so we have not experienced the good feelings of exercising. We often will only do something when we are in enough pain that we need to get up and do something because we can't stand to be in that place anymore. Start where you are and congratulate yourself for doing something.
The momemtum thing is so true.
I'm on a student exchange and I have much less classes, homework and things to do / attend to. When I look at last year, I was always working and studying, this year is litteraly a long spring break and whenever I have to actually start working I have trouble to do so.
I'm feeling that big time right now. Taking 3 classes and barely studying. It's harder to get going than when I started University, taking 5 courses and doing assignments 5 days in advance.
Damn, this is true for me as well. I'm so lazy whereas I absolutely shouldn't be, especially not right now in this stage of my life. I need and want to change that!
Instead of watching this at 5 am about to sleep. I will set an alarm clock for next morning to wake up at 5

Great video too we all needed this! 👌🏻👏🏻
just had a massively shitty day, ended it with a good gym session. Came out another person. Anxiety and depression are pervasive and truly fcked, but exercising REALLY really helps me deal with the more hardcore feelings. Takes the edge off, liberates me for a whole different perspective on life. What i now struggle with is more a sense of being kind to myself when i dont meet my goals or dont improve as fast as i can. Its all good if i just keep at it, one step at a time. Keep perfectionism under control and avoid comparing with other people who are naturally fitter becoz they ve been training for a longer time. Sometimes i go training and i still feel a little overwhelmed (everyone is fitter than me, blablabla) but the rush that comes after giving my best at it... its priceless. And the mental benefits are FAR superior than the physical ones, no matter how greatly you improve phisically... its always gonna be even better between your ears. 🤜🤛
After high school is quit working for two years. I gained some considerable weight and everyday felt slow and depressing. Didn't know what I wanted to study in college and had no real motivation. All I did was sit in front of my pc and play games all day. Now it's been 4 months and I've changed my life around. Making better choices. I wake up and take a cold shower everyday and then begin my workout. I've been sticking to a plan for these 4 months and I'm already seeing results physically and mentally. And you know what? A funny thing happens when you start to look better and feel better. You gain confidence and like Joe said, you gain momentum. Just pick a plan, start, and stay with it! Whether you're into bodyweight workouts, weight training, yoga whatever just start and stay with it.
I entered a plan a few days ago and i was just gonna quit that until i read your comment...Really Thanks a lot🧕🧕🧕🧕

This helped motivate me to start working out again
I started working out in my mid-twenties and I wish I did it way earlier. I've been exercising for 7 years now and it has become such a staple of my life that I rely on it to fix me up when other things go wrong. It won't fix all your problems but it makes you feel like you can overcome them and it gives you the motivation to try.
I just started working out...I hope I can keep at it for the rest of the year🤧
I'm slowly getting back into the gym after suffering an elbow blowout nearly 12 months ago. It didn't take 12 months to heal but during and after it I became depressed, I lost all motivation and let myself go. I put on some weight, began to eat like shit and treated my body with contempt.
Everytime I said this is the week I go back to the gym regularly, I would go once or twice and return to my now "normal" lifestyle. It's not easy to develop a routine, and live a healthy lifestyle. It is however incredibly easy to give up.
Don't let yourself give up.

Love this video! It's so true. At first, you never want to and when you finally get around to working out it becomes like an addiction, and you need to do it everyday. infact, you get excited to work out. you find time to squeeze it in even when you have a busy day. Not only do you feel better, you build your confidence, and as begin to love yourself more that love passes on to others, you'll notice you won't be as negative and that can open new possibilities with others

Motivation: WORK OUT IF YOU WANT TO GET LAID! 😁
There will be people out there that get laid and don’t work out. Keeping working out boy.
you still have to play the game though, being fit is just being granted an opportunity to play. And chances are she wont stick around if you have nothing else to offer but just yourself. in my opinion, the game isnt worth playing unless theres something more than just "getting laid"
Having a powerful physique hasn't done much for me in that area of things. Some things just can't be changed, working out is the difference maker for only a select majority of people
@@RetaliationOG I would say that being physically fit makes it easier for oneself to get into a relationship for numerous reasons:
1. You are physically more attractive to people
2. Your self confidence will go up
3. People who are committed to health show a sign of discipline
But one thing that I believe I have learned is that just because you are fit doesn't mean you have the ability to not "put yourself out there". I mean that even if you are physically attractive, chances are the only way you will get into a relationship with someone you find attractive is if you make the first move.
TL:DR
If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself
@@dakotamercer1679 I definitely agree with those points, but no amount of initiative makes disproving stereotypes and an ugly face easier. I don't mean to be a pessimist, it's just a different upward battle.

This was less about motivation and more about habit.
Habit beats motivation any day of the week. Motivation requires constant effort to maintain whereas habit fuels itself.
That’s like the whole point he was trying to make
It’s 2am just got off a 24 hours shift (I’m a paramedic) I was going to say fuck the workout I’ve had a long day but I’m going now!
Saul Goodman beast mode
Cool, but sleep is also important.
I think it might be in your best interest to sleep first lol
Sleep is more important lol
was thinking about skipping offseason practice, this vid made me look forward to working hard and the feeling of being sore.
The most motivation I felt is when I stopped needlessly putting pressure on myself. Get rid of that “movie” mentality, that you have to suffer immensely to reach these goals and things you want. It’s just working out. It’ll maybe hurt a little bit. You’ll feel amazing throughout the day. You get to plan your week out and set goals and take on new challenges. It’s fun. It might seem like this hard thing that you have to force yourself to go to do, it’s not. Don’t stress yourself out for it. You’re only missing out on the experience. Go work out today, you deserve it
One of the most inspiring videos I've seen
GamingTaylor yo dude! I loved your steam card vids
Glad I watched this. Cause I am having a tough time in the gym right meow
Love the effort you put into this! Thank you.
I haven’t worked out in a years it’s been hard to get back to do so , im really go to start I felt the best ive ever did when I did workr out miss the feeling
The fact the artist is left handed and drawing on a white board without smearing anything is blowing my mind
Saman Rai it’s not real, the cap is on the whole time and the color is always black.
@@Mactakun plus, the board keeps moving to the left. It'd be like 20ft long
Actually y’all, I just realized this was all already drawn, and it’s being erased. the video is put in reverse
It was drawn while on DMT
it's called adobe after effects
28 seconds into this and I’m all pumped up and decided to go to the gym!
Always come back here when I don't feel like training. Thanks Joe.
AfterSkool.. you never cease to inspire! Thankyou!
You're brilliant! Nice illustrations
Joe and Dr. Rhonda Patrick were an awesome duo to pick for this! Loving the work here! Editing and flow was great. Animation was on point and funny. New subscriber earned here for sure!
Thanks!!
Your body is the greatest tool you'll ever own.
I havent been working out in 4 months but like 2 minutes in and I feel like going back again absolutely amazing
Joe Rogan is the man

Something I hear alot living in the south is "I'd rather be fat and happy then not eat donuts, 'cause I'm going to die anyway!"
It's horrible logic.. it's like saying "Well i might as well drive my car off a bridge since I'm gonna die anyway."
@@ChandlerWorthen oeh , good idea!
I don't understand why those people think you CAN'T be happy if you're not eating tons of sugar and fat every day. Happiness comes from lots of different things.
For example, I believe I will be happier if I become ripped one day.
They're just making excuses.
I consider myself athletic and spend a lot of my week and paycheck on exercise, but I think that is a great way of thinking if they genuinely enjoy it. Not everyone bases how they feel solely on their physical condition
Ignorance at its finest .. I'm from and live in Louisiana, and hear this all the time..
Downloaded! Going to listen to it everyday! Thanks💖🙏🏻
Glad I found this video, it makes a lot of sense. It has inspired and motivated me . Thank you 🙏💪
wow what an awesome video! Seeing the older people starting at 5:25 is so motivating. Everything you talked about is on point 100%. I just turned 40 and feel like I'm in the best shape of my life. My wife and I do yoga every morning and I mountain bike every weekend. We both can fit our clothes from highschool. One very important thing that I think you forgot to mention is food. My belief is its 60% diet and 40% fitness. People can exercise all they want but if they shove soda and processed foods down their mouths they will not progress. I am sure your video will help motivate tons of viewers, great job!
Thanks! We're definitely going to make one about food!
How about 100% diet and 100% fitness, going all out with everything :)
Yeah, I’m 35 and have totally changed my life around with exercise
