Finding Peace: Blaise Pascal's Philosophical Advice for Anxiety
Pascal recognized the power of our imagination. Although we tend to think of imagination as a good thing, it could also bring us anxiety and despair. Left alone with our thoughts, many of us might get flooded with worst case scenarios and other mental ghosts that bring us harm. According to Pascal, we often find our peace in diversions and distractions. Even a king with a high standard of living must rely on diversions or else he might start to worry about all the possible ways his kingdom could fall.
I argue that it has become harder to rely on diversion in today's world because of the immense amount of digital stimulation available to us. What immediately comes to mind are those tik tok videos which displays two videos in one. Our phones also often interrupt our experience with the present moment. Perhaps, then, we should try to practice mindfulness so we can more effectively divert ourselves from anxious thoughts.

Jean Jacques Rousseau and the State of Nature
zhlédnutí 932Před dnem
Hobbes and Rousseau are often put against each other for their views on what life would look like for humans in the state of nature. For Rousseau, Hobbes is looking at the state of nature through a biased societal lens, a society that has things like property, honor, success, and various goods. A human in the state of nature is blissfully ignorant of these things and is concerned only with the ...

Lev Shestov was a Russian existentialist philosophy working in the late 19th to early 20th century. He was very interested in the idea of freedom and creativity, wanting to see individuals have the freedom to construct and change their worldviews. However, philosophical systems that claim to be absolute and objective would get in the way of one's creativity. Logic and reason would restrain one'...
The Knight of Faith: Do You Have What it Takes? | Soren Kierkegaard

Kierkegaard discusses his concept of the Knight of Faith in his work, Fear and Trembling. In it, faith is not just something you immediately stumble upon, but rather, it is arrived at through a series of necessary movements. To be a true knight of faith, one must first become a knight of resignation. At this stage, one renounces the finite material world to concentrate on the spiritual and the ...
The Art of War vs The Prince: Which is Better?

You'll find a plethora of videos out there applying both The Art of War and The Prince to today's world for self-improvement purposes. Therefore, I've decided to compare these two philosophical texts to determine which is better for modern everyday pe...

Many books from the world of philosophy have found popularity within the world of self-improvement. One of those books is The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli. Culturally, we use the term "machiavellian" to describe someone who's manipulative, and when reading the actual text, we do see instances where Machiavelli advocates for less than moral means to achieve some end. Debatably, most if not all ...

This video goes over what the Kant's categorical imperative is, what it means, and 2 different formulations of it. This is differentiated from something like consequentialist ethics which focuses on the consequences of an...

In the first part of the Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals, Kant starts by examining the importance of a good will. Virtues such as intelligence or courage can turn evil if the will guiding them is not good. Therefore a good will might be considered to be good in itself without further qualifications. After this, he turns to the concept of duty. To do an action according to duty is to do...

Regarding the third aspect of beauty. It sounds like he's talking about duality. One thing can't exist without the other. Hence TRULY acknowledging or approaching one thing means to appreciate the whole universe. One star can't exist without the rest of the universe which "made it" from which can be extrapolated that the whole universe couldn't exist without this one star because the universe made the star by being itself. So the star in itself is also the the whole universe manifesting as it. It's the same with us and anything else.

Hackett is the S***! Thier Complete Works of Plato. Ruined me on everything academia, education and university. Why? Because they included a book called "Defenitions" written by the scholars of the actual "Academy." Guess what the defenition to philosophy is? It's not "love of wisdom." "Φιλοσοφία: The state which contemplates the truth. What makes it true. Cultivation of the soul*. Based upon correct resson." That f**** n red pilled me so hard! And it's all Hackett's fault. *P.S. What they meant by soul was The Soul with a capital "S" not your soul. Soul to them was this Roger Penrose notion of a Tripartite reality. That was neither dualist or monoist. In that it was divided 3 ways mental, physical and mathematical. Tripartite.Which is later highlighted in Euclid's treatise on geometry. With the 1st postulate on how construct an equilateral triangle using the points of two circles... 😆.. Roger Penrose's triangle ⟁ anyone? Anyways the two circles in Euclid's 1st postulate represent the "monad" and "dyad" the Equilateral Triangle it constructs is the image of the higher form of Triangle that only exists in the mathematical realm. Which is seen by the mind through the physical sense of sight.
