  • Renowned truck journalist Brian Weatherley puts a Volvo F16 470 from 1987 head-to-head with the new Volvo FH16 750, in a haulage challenge up one of Sweden's toughest ascents - the so called Gothenburg hill located just outside Jönköping, Sweden - just to find out what has really changed in 25 years.

That hill is good enough for a test like that. And it's a high traffic piece of road which means that if you have enough power to keep up the pace when going up you will not disturb the flow too bad. On a narrow winding road you won't benefit from power in the same way.

I don't see what's so tough about Jönköpingsbacken (Jönköping hill). I'm 18 years old and I've been driving there daily for 2 and a half month now. First time I went down that hill, I was 17 years old and weighed 25 tons. The time after that I was 18 and 2 months old and weighed 58 tons in a Volvo FH440. No problem in early February because the right lane is heated to prevent ice from forming. Just today I went both down and up that hill. Down I weighed 37 tons and up I weighed 22 tons. I've only lost traction there ones but that was when I was driving 25.25 meter. Fully loaded, 5 axle trailer, and almost empty truck so about 50 tons in total and only 5.5 of those on the drive axle. Was driving a MAN TGX 26 440.
