My son has a type called hemoglobin sc disease. The form he has tends to be not as severe as sickle cell anemia. The different types determine how your blood will sickle, what the forms of treatment will be, and how it effects your body.
Thank you. There are several types of Sickle Cell Disease however my type is supposed to be mild (and it was until I became an adult). I have S-Beta Thalassemia and didn't have issues until I graduated from college and since I've had now 2 strokes and both hips replaced. Most adults with Sickle Cell Disease are not able to work or finish college due to their health issues so I'm one of the few I know that actually graduated college and grad school. Now in my 30s I'm having more problems but everyone has something to battle. Unfortunately my brother and I both were born with it, which is rare to have multiple kids with the disease and not the trait.

Disclaimer: this will be a long read and I apologize for it, but I MUST make some serious points. After watching the exchange between the officer and Castile from the cops' vantage point, I can understand A LITTLE why the jury had a hard time convicting the cop. The officer walked up to Castile's car with caution, but he didn't seem to be overly concerned. It seemed that he only became concerned after Castile announced that he had a firearm as he continued to reach for whatever it was he was reaching for (his wallet?). After he shot Castile, the cop seemed to be distraught that things ended the way they did. It's quite possible that the jury figured that he cop REASONABLY felt his life may have been in danger and that he was very sorry about it. Now, as for ME, some things are truly concerning. For starters, Castile appeared to remain calm throughout the entire exchange. He didn't appear to make any sudden movement(s), he never raised his voice, etc. Yet, the cop went from zero to 100 real quick. Second, Castile informed the cop that he had a firearm, which, by law, he was required to do (maybe the law needs to be revised). But, let's use some common sense, here: if Castile really had intentions of using his firearm on the cop, WHY WOULD HE EVEN TELL ME THAT HE HAD ONE? Thirdly, the fact that the cop would equate the smell of marijuana coming from a Black person's vehicle to murder shows, at the very least, prejudice, if not full-blown racism. Fourthly, even if the cop felt that his life was in danger, he CLEARLY had no regard for the fact that there were two other people in the car, one of which was a child, as he proceeded to fire repeatedly into the vehicle. Fifthly, why did it take so many shots to disable the "threat" that the cop felt? He couldn't have at least been charged with excessive force? Sixthly, why is it that several minutes passed before aid was rendered to Castile? Seventhly, the cop told the court that he pulled Castile over because he and his girlfriend looked like two people that had been involved in a robbery (which is another reason why the jury may have failed to convict). Yet, he told Castile that he pulled him over because one of his lights was out. Now, which one is it? Trust me, I can understand that any cop would want to be sure he had the right people before he outright accused the wrong people of being suspects to crimes. But, the Artist Formerly Known as Prince once said, "Something in the water don't not compute." Lastly, if the police force fired the officer, isn't that a way of admitting that he PROBABLY at the very least used excessive force? Even if the cop had no ill-will, I can argue that drunk drivers don't have ill-will, either. Yes, they sometimes cause accidents that lead to serious harm and/or deaths as a result of bad judgement, but I honestly believe that there is rarely any real ill intent to harm or kill. But, they are STILL convicted. So, why can't cops who, as a result of bad judgement, kill or harm be held to the same standard? . A cop here in Houston was alerted by his home alarm that his home was being burglarized. He went home, saw the suspect on an adjacent street carrying his belongings and he confronted the suspect (which lead to a fight). Then, the cop shot and killed the suspected and kicked him while he was in incapacitated. The cop faces up to one year in prison and a $4,000 fine on the ‘Class A’ assault for kicking the suspect while he was down. Yet, the cop who shot Castile seven times gets NOTHING? Oh, the difference is, the Houston cop is Black.

I have sickle cell and it's called a sickle cell crisis. your red blood cells lack oxygen causing them to to be crescent (or sickle) shaped, instead of round like the average person. it is an extremely painful disease and it also causes a lot of complications in other areas of your body. I can't even begin to count the amount of hospitalizations, blood transfusions, exchange transfusions, surgeries, etc. that I've experienced or that I've witnessed my fellow sicklers go through. if you want to know anything else or there are any sicklers that need help, I'm an advocate and would be happy to help. thank you for shedding some light on sickle cell

Im from Minnesota and lived in Falcon Heights for 8 years. that literally could have been my dad or my father, and if we still lived there, my son! this story has hurt me to the core - they keep switching the rules on us! I have sickle cell and it's called a sickle cell crisis. your red blood cells lack oxygen causing them to to be crescent (or sickle) shaped, instead of round like the average person. it is an extremely painful disease and it also causes a lot of complications in other areas of your body. I can't even begin to count the amount of hospitalizations, blood transfusions, exchange transfusions, surgeries, etc. that I've experienced or that I've witnessed my fellow sicklers go through.
