  • I think we all feel despondent at times, whether we are a full time professional artist or a hobby artist, there is nothing worse than feeling down about your art and your coloured pencil drawings.
There are ways to help you out of the rut, and to help you with feelings of inadequacy or feelings that you're just not good enough or you have even forgotten how to draw - sounds funny, but it happens so often, but it's usually when we go through a period of change or development.
Being able to recognise that we are going through change or development, helps to set you back on track with your art. Recognising the way your chosen medium works also helps - coloured pencil is notoriously slow, and there are many many ugly stages before you end up with a beautiful drawing. How many of us end up abandoning pieces because they're not going well or we feel we can't create a certain effect, and then feel bad about ourselves for doing it.
In this video, which is an excerpt from a full tutorial over on my Patreon channel, I just chat as I'm drawing about how to overcome insecurities, why certain challenges arise and what to do to get over them. I have many of these little coaching gems within my full tutorials, as well as talking through all the techniques, if you'd like to see more of my full length video tutorials, learn more about marketing your art or starting your art business, join me on Patreon / bonnysnowdonfineart

i struggle with this too but i find it easier to learn from stuff that interests you other than what someone else is living up to . ie i tend to find my interests like my dog who is really cute or fantasy art . before i will dabble in other things

Thanks Bonny, needed this. As I’m gradually improving, people are asking me to draw their pets, but I’m no where near good enough to do that, & have started feeling a lot of pressure to improve faster, therefor not enjoying the process as much. It’s only friends & family asking, but I don’t feel I would do a good enough job just yet.
Your videos help a lot! 🙏 xx

Thank you I needed a kick up the bum! My Fairy wren came to a standstill when I was overwhelmed by the white downy feathers.💖

I know just how that feels - and it's only because it's a different technique - but recognising that will make you feel better about feeling overwhelmed :) I get all panicky when I finish an ear and then have to move onto a different sort of fur - it's just because its different and takes time to get into the swing of things :)

I'm retired now but enjoyed my art work when I was young (40 yrs ago) we didn't have colored pencils then. I'm sure a lot will come back to me when I get started . I ordered supplies to get started as my local hobby stores don't stock professional supplies. I'm sure I'll get frustrated some but need to push through it. Listening to your advice has helped. I'm interested in drawing animals so will be watching lots of your work. Thank you and subscribed

Found this video on the perfect day. I needed a pep talk. I always in the middle of my drawing think about aborting it. But, I force myself to keep going as that will help me learn. In the end it normally works out.

Yes. I started well with my CP and pastelmat and then my efforts went, to put it politely, off! My struggle is slowing down enough when I’m applying pigment. I’m now slowing down, enough and then some.

Julia Bos there are some wonderful artists on CZcams - have you ever considered Patreon? I have a channel but there is a Dutch Artist Leontief van Vliet who may be just the ticket for you - I think she does some tutorials in Dutch as well as English. Do feel free to message me if you want any help 😊
