I think the movie Mickey Rooney is talking about is Primal Fear.
That Richard Gere story has been floating around forever, rumor has it that it was Sylvester Stallone that started it (he has since denied this) because Gere and Stallone hated each other when they both worked on the low budget movie, The Lords of Flatbush, and Stallone got him fired from it.
