Small point, but when you put the wheel on the machine it sounded like the inside of the centre of the wheel scraped along the threaded bar. Doesn't sound like much but that's enough to knock the lacquer off and let water get underneath. Many wheels corrode out from the centre caps because of this.
It was good video. The only thing I would suggest and that I would always do is if I had two and a quarter ounces on one side of the rim I would break the bead on the tire and spin it 25 to 30% and I would always split the weights even on both sides and hide them behind the spoke the idea is not to see weights from the outside. A good tire installer would never let you see sticky weights anywhere on the rim and I certainly would not.
What an amazing bit of technology! Interesting to see how this works. Just recently had 2 front tyres replaced with brand new ones, went on the highway the other day and the car started violently vibrating as i hit past 50:/ guessing the wheels require balancing.
Sounds like they need to be balanced. Too much air would only cause them to ride rough and feel every bump, not vibrate. Also, you notice wheel imbalance at hight speeds around 50 mph like you said. I would take them back and have them checked again.
Wheel balancing is just a helper. One need to road force balance the wheel at 80km/h, 100km/h and 120km/h. Before balancing the technician must make sure there is no rim bending at all. Even the most perfect tire balancing in the world would be useless for a slightly bent rim.
I have aluminum alloy wheels on my Super Duty truck and the shop who replaced my tires installed the traditional weights instead of the sticky weights. I think this is going to be a problem since I live in the northeast and experience tells me that I'm going to have corrosion under the weights when the tires go to be balanced the next go around. Am I right? Did the my service department use the wrong weights?
OK, I live in Switzerland and my steering wheel is shaking. I took my wheels to a few of garages to check the balance, but all mechanics spin the wheel just a few revolutions, obviously at very low RPM too. Logic tells me, and this video seems to show, that one should give the a wheel a proper spin. Can anyone tell me what should roughly be the RPM at which should the balancing be done?
The Tossers that just balanced my front wheels stuck the new weights directly on to the black foam residue from where the old weights had been . They fell off in my hand when I was putting the wheel on! Just remember all you tyre fitters out there, do the effing job properly you lazy bastards!!!!
3:20 no no no. never use multiple 1/4 inch weights... they sell 1oz 2 oz 4oz weights and inbetween or you can stack them if your not worried about caliper clearance and also then you dont have to clean as much of the rim.. use some heat and they will stick alot better and use some heat before cleaning and whipping it also
wow looks nice and easy ,,,,i am in northern florida inverness to be exact ,,,,i cant find a decent tire balancer anywhere around here , i have a berrien dune buggy with good rims ,,,empi alluminium machinist cut , no hopping no nothing ,but yet between 53 to about 58 i always get a shimmy that goes away , so other words i can drive through it , meaning its a tire balance issues and yet , NO ONE can get right ! and yes new front end all new tie rods ,,,,go figure ! i was so desperate that i let the last guy install wheights on the outside of the rim even . just saying
thanks for the information, me wondering when a new set of tyes are fitted to alloy rims is it possible that no weights are required, 2 of my tyres have no weights and the vehicle drive good
got my wheel balanced today. if weight tabs on the wheel is not put on straight, it was crooked against the outline of the inner wheel and last piece of a weight table has a 2-3mm gap away from other weight tabs thats connected will all have any effect?
How do you know when to take off weight or add on. Soo eg 1st it ask you it wants 30g stick weights then you spin it then it ask you they need another 20g on a different location then it might say they want 40g then the process repeats itself in a endless loop

Paint the weights black, you're lucky if you have these sticky-type flat weights as they balance both sides. The old lead weights wedged into the rim edge are the worst.

Could be there is too much air in the tyres. Might worth checking the air pressure :)

Dont know if you already got them balanced but I think everyone should know that vibration is a silent killer to any material's strength.

With that much weight required, I'd maybe think about rotating the tyre 180 degrees on the rim to see if it helps.

Specialized 29er yes, that is possible. 1 wheel on my Subaru is balanced without needing any weights.
Is it bad to only balance one side of the wheel? Not dynamic is the term you used

What’s the point of telling it the places to hide the weights behind if you don’t split the weights up and put them behind the spokes out of sight?
Just got new tires and one tire have just one weight clip on inside.Nothing outside? Is that normal to be unbalanced just on one side?
Does ur machine test for tire uniformity(neutons of a tire) if a tire has a point in it?
pokernative76 yes, it measures wheel runout. However, it is not the model that tests for stiff/soft spots in the tire (road force)

Sonja Poon that's a residual imbalance. 1/10th of an ounce is generally not noticeable at all.

YOU ONLY CLEANED THE WHEEL PRIOR TO THE FIRST APPLICATION OF WEIGHTS, NOT THE SECOND.
Good observation, You caught me! The down side to trying to make videos after teaching high school kids for 8 hours.

The downside of paying a shop that has the same negligence is your wheel weights will most certainly fall off.

Nice video... But 2.25 ounces on one side is a lot, should Break Down The Rim turn the tire 180 degrees and rebalance.

Next time get organized when you do a presentation, avoid looking for what to you in the middle of a job. Be prepared. Nice vid though.
You didn't press the weights on the wheel for 20 seconds as required by most manufacturers. These weights will come off. Another incompetent tire tech
