What is Theory of Mind? | Psychology 101

In this episode of Psychology 101, we here at Psyched! discuss one of the more well-known and fascinating concepts in psychology - namely, Theory of Mind.
Theory of Mind refers to our ability to recognize that the mental states that we experience, such as our thoughts, feelings, intents, desires, and knowledge, are distinct and different from the mental states that others experience. Theory of Mind has been shown to be fully developed around the age of 4, and has been studied using tasks such as the Sally-Anne task and other false belief tasks.
In this video, we discuss what Theory of Mind is and the various ways in which it has been studied. We also discuss conflicting research that shows that while children under the age of 4 often fail certain false belief tasks, children as young as 15 months old have still been shown to be able to attribute false beliefs in others.
