Today, we wrap up JIMTOBER with one of Jimin’s personal favorites…a seductive love song that hit us like a ton of bricks. As is customary with 99% of BTS’ songs, “FILTER” contains both vocal and layers upon layers of masterful meaning.

YES. Jimin can rap well!!!!!!!!
Filter can actually be pretty sad depending how it's interpreted. Jimin sings about how he would literally be anything people want him to be, to the point of erasing himself to "mold" a pretty lie and be loved (this is a direct reference to the song Fake Love and to his other solo song "Lie"). When I first heard it, I was confused because the lyrics seemed to be saying the opposite of songs like Fake Love which are all about being true to yourself. But the lyrics can also be saying that a person has many sides and you can be different things at different times while still being true to yourself. It can also be interpreted as him actually accepting that he isn’t just one thing that people told him to be and he actually is a human full of charms and surprises that can impress anyone with whatever they want.
Because MOTS: 7 incorporates psychological themes and concepts I think Filter (within the theme) represents how Jimin has no control or has unwillingly given others permission to choose which parts (filters or personas) they like about him and ignore/disregard the ones they don’t like or deem “broken/damaged/or not up to standard” thus “choose your filter”. Choose is a command, it’s not even a question, he’s stating that people will choose their opinions on him regardless of how hard he tries to impress everyone with different personalities(filters)-that’s my interpretation based on the concept of mots which is interconnected with mentality-personalities, eg., ego or shadow or persona for example! I think this intereptation also fits how Jimin is in real life. He's notorious for being one of the most closed off members when it comes to his real self and his personal life. We know very little of Park Jimin compared to what we know of his persona JIMIN. Which is healthy when one is as famous as any of the BTS members are. Jimin rarely talks about himself or his friends or his family, even with how open he is about his feelings sometimes. I see Filter as him telling people to choose which "persona" (filter) of his they like and take it to heart, since people won't love his real self.
The meaning we got from the performance was another one. At the beginning of his career he wanted to look manly and worked hard to act like a macho and stressed himself for being always at the top and appreciated. Then he learned how to embrace his true self and mix the palette (as he said in the lyrics), he wants to be true to himself and be whoever he wants without limits, so having both "feminine" and "masculine" features (as shown in the temporary tattoos he had on his hands pre-D2). And it's linked to the photoshoot in 2019 where he has a fake tattoo with the bigender sign on his arm. So he has so many filters and sides of him to show and with whom attract people, no matter who you are or your tastes/sexuality, he can fit it all. He can attract anyone.

Jimin explained Filter this way: filters are something we can choose for our pictures when posting on social media, but we can also refer this way to prejudices and stereotypes. It is a very complex song, that I still fail to grasp fully. There is always something sneaking away from putting it to words. Truly magical song.

Filter is one of my favourite Jimin solos. And this performance is phenomenal. Jimin has a gift of capturing people's eyes with his vocals, visuals, dance overall his performance. Yes, you can't Jimout once you Jimin.

One of the reasons Jimin loves filter so much and relates to it so much is because you'd find people label him as one or the other. Good guy or bad guy. But this song actually is him expressing that he's everything you want him to be. He's uniquely himself. He can be his truest self. Yes finally my favourite reactors reacting to one of my favourite songs from jimin. I remember the hype this song created when it was released on map of the soul 7 and during the online concert everyone was going nuts after the dress illusion thing he did. it was so phenomenal to witness he truly lives for the performance giving us classical music inspired spooky yet very mj feel on lie then RnB influenced smoothing voice with some usher moves for serendipity now a whole different genre of Latin pop. he can do it all!!!

When I first discovered this song, I interpreted it much the same way you did.....that I am a person that can adapt in a relationship to whatever you need me to be. Now when I hear it, it feels like it is even more literal than that..."I"M YOUR FILTER"...meaning every time you hear the words "I" or "me" you can replace those with the word "filter". "Which one of "me" do you want?" equates to "which "filter" do you want"...."you can pick and use one of "me""equals "You can pick and use one of the "filters"". We live in a world full of social media, app filters and "Instagram worthy" presentations of ourselves. Instead of the song meaning "I can adapt to you" (in a relationship), for me it means "how do you want to present yourself today?". Jimin does a beautiful job of presenting himself as different adaptations of the same person...both in this song and in real life (his duality). Thanks for reacting to this beautiful song.

this song to me can be interpret in two different ways. the one you describes as to how fan sees Jimin. and the second one is how sad it is that he is changing himself to please us. in their love yourself album they talk about not trying to be someone you are not to please the one you love. But here he is willing to do it to make Army happy. that´s why i am going for the first version, your version. i think this is a portrait of Jimins duality the way army sees him. but at the same time comes close to his multilayered personality.
i think Jimin is very mysterious because we feel like we know him. he always showing us these different sides to himself and yet i feel like we dont really know his true self. i think he is scared of what people might think of him. he thinks he is not perfect the way he is so i am going with a theory that he might be gay or bi. but idk and i dont care i just hope all of them find love it´s sad to me that they might never had that yet. being gay in Korea is still very tabu so it would be a big drama if he would admit it. but his portfolio gives a pretty clear picture of it. or at least showing us his famine side.

I don't know why I don't really see it as a love song. I see it as him saying he will be whatever you want him to be but if you think about it, none of it is real and when you build a person and make them whatever you want every day, how real can that be. It's just a dream really.

Yankie, Suga and Jimin performed it at BTS's 3rd Muster(And the Suga/Jimin version is on the Proof album). Hi, linguist here and you brought up the shift in vocals when Jimin sings "ay" at the end and I just need to talk about what he's doing.
So he starts the final line with a breathy voice which means that his vocal cords are very relaxed and mostly open to allow more air through and you can even hear a bit of a cry in how he singing which is because he's using his false vocal cords (a set of muscles above the voice box that can vibrate to create sound which is how people get a creaking sound to their voice, especially when they aren't using their vocal cords such as being sick). Jimin actually uses his false vocal cords a lot which adds to his unique tone.
But when he sings the "ay," while he is lowering the note a bit, the reason it sounds so different from the previous notes is because he's switching from his false vocal cords back to his actual vocal cords and tighting they to get full closure (as opposed to leaving them almost entirely open for the breathy voice previously) which gives the illusion that his deepening his voice more than he actually is, making the transition between the two parts a lot easier than just trying to sing lower.
It's a beautiful example of a vocal technique that makes singing more sustainable rather than pushing the voice, which really shows off how much practice and work Jimin puts into his vocal performances 💜
I love it when people use the BTS members to teach vocal technique! Jimin uses so. much. texture. I think that and his unusual resonance is what makes everyone sit up and pay attention 😁

That's why army are continually surprised when they see a glimmer of the real Jimin, the way more self assured, demonstrative, take charge, confident, charismatic, alluring, at times sexy, person that kills on stage! So this (pure genius) song, that the CEO 'Hit-Man Bang' (called that since way back when, as a producer, whatever he was involved in became a hit) Mr. Bang Si Hyuk, himself, was actually involved in writing the ever so genius lyrics, that Jimin had a hand in as well.
The song's lyrics have more then one meaning!! So Jimin has pretty much been doing this since the beginning, playing the role of whatever army seems to prefer for him, but in actuality, hardly anyone knows the real Jimin! So much more then what many army believe him to be. Plus since Jimin never talks much about all his amazing past achievements, abilities, and accomplishments, even before ever joining BTS, many army are still unaware of so much.

This is a great description! I think there's a hint of playfulness in Filter too - in the live performance, I mean. It's part of what pushes me to a more positive and powerful interpretation, like this one. It feels like he's claiming the power he has to be whatever people want, rather than talking about being limited by it.

I feel like the "Ay" at the end could be either because it was so seemless that you can't even tell. I think it was more of an adlib (because there are many throughout the song) but I guess the more you listen to it, it sounds like one line. but either way, EVEN HIS VOICE HAS DUALITY.
This song is seriously one of my favorites. It's the way his voice is changing form one tone to the other, THAT BREAKDOWN and ughhh idk how to describe it😭. But just wait until you listen to 'Filter' in the car. (can't wait for the 'car test'!) The beat and instruments are just crazyy. altho in the car I like the sped up version tho as for many songs but by listening to the sped up version is how I began to pay attention to the bass in the back (which is my favvv thing when listening to 'Filter')

I heard few of their title tracks before so I thought to check out their then recent album for the first time (it was Mots7)
Played it on shuffle and filter was the FIRST song. I can't describe how shocked I was. I didn't knew abt any members or if it was a solo song but by the end of it I had it downloaded and added in all of my playlists 😭😭
