  • It's finally getting warmer outside and it's pleasant to be out and about with the tractors. A while back I received a great suggestion for a video, as I rebuilt the Bolens HT20 and the JD400 garden tractors. A subscriber suggested I should compare both of these tractors as they are very similar.
    So I came up with a comparison video today and I will discuss all the features which are similar, but different at the same time.
    If this video was helpful, please give it a "thumbs up", comment if you have any questions and consider subscribing.

    I have had a jd400 for 28 years. The thing is a work horse!!! I have many attachments 60” mower, front hydraulic blade, a front 2 stage snow blower, the 3 point hitch and rear pto, rear tiller, rear grading blade, rear ballast box, to add weight to the rear because I have the front end loader as well. I also have an extra set of rear wheels with the ag tires filled and have two sets of wheel weights I can stack. I also have turf rear tires like you and have chains for them in the winter. Like I said the machine is a work horse. I replaced my K532 with a K582 23hp. Runs nice. I wish they still made a machine today as well built!!!

      Thank you for sharing your awesome experience story about your JD 400😃👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽 I believe every word you say and I bet with a little bit of maintenance you Deere will last you many more years to come!!
      You have literally every attachment and I could only wish for them...but they are getting hard to find here in central Alberta. The K582 must give it that extra power!! Enjoy your time and maybe you‘ll be able to add more Deere tractors to your collection (if you don‘t already have one)😉

    I had the HD 20. Even though you have 2 spools the deck has hydraulic lift, lower, and float. The deck lift cylinder is also used for front or rear attachments to raise and lower. That's why you can raise lower and tilt left or right with the plow and snowblower attachment.

Still in the back of my Chevy (shorty) van, It fills it up back there. Waiting for nicer weather. No attachments yet...hope I can locate something. I bought a Wheelhorse GT14 last spring with a tiller, and was given a JD240 last summer. Have some work to do.

      Thank you for your kind words and support!😃 You picked up an awesome project and it‘s crazy how you fit that into your van. It‘s really a good idea to start to work on anything mechanical when you have a little bit of heat or some nicer weather. The JD 400 will only accept JD 400 attachments, so before you purchase anything double check the serial numbers.
      Your smaller tractors are awesome and I bet you can get a lot of work done with them. Both tractors have their strengths and you‘ll have a nice collection once they all run the way you want them to.

    A closer comparison would be the HT23 since it has a 2 speed rear end and power steering. But either way.. these machines are capable of a lot more than people think. I use my HT20 on my 8 acre vegetable farm and it does everything I ask of it.

    • @WorkshopRebuild
      @WorkshopRebuild  Před 2 lety

      Correct the Bolens HT23 does have the power steering and the 2-speed rear end, which would make it better to compare. Then again the HT23 has a 23 HP engine that will probably outwork the JD400... There will always be pros and cons about every machine and it's hard to choose one machine! A subscriber gave me this video idea and I thought it is a great topic to discuss.
      These machines are extremely well built and anyone with a larger acreage will be able handle almost every task with one of these garden tractors. I'm glad you to hear that you're still using your Bolens HT20 until this day on your vegetable farm. Truly AMAZING! Let's hope with a little bit of love it'll last you many more years. Thanks for the feedback and thank you for sharing your side of the story! The John Deere 400 is a great machine and it can take on quite a bit of work with the correct attachments. The 318 is basically a JD400 in a smaller package which is nice if you have tight areas to maintain. I'd really like to find a 318 in the future, but who knows (I've already got too many projects). It depends where you are located. Some States and Provinces sold more than others, therefore you will find the deals or non-running tractors in those areas. As for the HT20 I have, it's quite rare here in AB, Canada. Maybe you'll find a decent one in the near future. Best regards -Andreas

    Bolens front PTO powers: single or dual speed snow blowers, front reel mower and probably a pavement cleaning brush. The HT 20 also was designed for a mid mount sickle bar cutter and if course a mid mount rotary mower. I had a J.D. 400 at one time as well as my bolens collection but I sold it as I never really liked the forward/reverse lever. The Bolens had the forward/reverse movement on the right pedal which to me is superior to a lever. Hope u r doing well!! Greetings from West Virginia.

    • @WorkshopRebuild
      @WorkshopRebuild  Před rokem +1

      That is great information about all attachments that can be mounted onto the Bolens HT20! Speaking of a sickle bar, I'd love to see one come up for sale in my area...but that's very unlikely! I agree with you. The JD 400 forward/reverse is not the best feature, since it takes away one hand from steering. On the HT20 it is much more user friendly to operate and in todays world you will see that almost every machine has the forward & reverse as a foot pedal! I hope you're enjoying your Bolens garden tractor. I am doing well thanks for asking and I hope you are too!! Regards -Andreas

    Have a 400. They JD, for some reason made the pto gearbox run at 800 rpm on the output shaft and not 540 like all tractors great and small. Only a model 35 or 35a tiller will work.
    Maybe they feel that higher input rpm to the tiller tiller gearbox with different gears to match tiller tine speed will wear better under extreme loads?
    Used pto shafts and gearboxes are ridiculously expensive!

    When you were rebuilding both tractors, how was getting parts for the repairs ?? Expensive, hard to find or whatever. I personally like all tractors so giving you a pick would be hard. ONE more thing fella, if you have space for needle bearings under the steering axle shafts, which is about 1/8 to 3/16 extra thickness between the front axle and wheel spindles your tractor will feel like you have some power assist. The friction reduction that one gets from this added feature really works Sir. Just my two cents worth !!

    Hi, I have a Bolens HT 20. I'm wondering ( I'm far from being a mechanic ) about going from a mechical fuel pump to electrical fuel pump. What or how do I connect the electrical part of the electrical fuel pump? Do I just connect it the battery or to something else? Also is it a special fuel pump that is made for tractors? Thank you!

    • @WorkshopRebuild
      @WorkshopRebuild  Před rokem

      There are low pressure (12V) fuel pumps out there that will work for a garden tractor. These fuel pumps usually just have two wires (red and black). To wire one of these, you will have to wire the black wire (negative = ground) to your frame. The red wire on the other hand will have to be tied into the ignition switch. You will need to find a common "HOT" wire when you key is in the ON position and when your key is in the start position. You can then splice into that wire and attach it to the red wire from the fuel pump.
      It's really not all too hard, it's just a matter of finding the correct wire and locating a good position to mount your fuel pump. This will be anywhere between your fuel tank and your engine. I hope this helps. Cheers

    What snow blower would you recommend for the 400? I know the model 50 is supposed to be the most compatible, but is there a way to modify a newer one?

    • @WorkshopRebuild
      @WorkshopRebuild  Před 2 lety

      Hello Jorge, that is a really good question! I had a conversation with a fellow JD enthusiast about this topic (JD 400 Snowblower). The JD 400 has a specific PTO rpm, which has a peak output of 2000rpm. For the Rototiller and the Snowblower, John Deere used the same reduction gearbox (Input 1/ Output 1.5). The Snowblower has a drive sprocket mechanism that will allow the rotor to run at 945rpm (max rpm). This means the rotor sprocket is around 30% smaller than the drive sprocket.
      This will help you if you want to find a suitable snowblower, as it is a very special setup! Not only are the rpm's special, but also the mounting points.
      As we went back and forth to find a solution on a suitable snowblower for his JD 400, an original model 50 snowblower popped up for sale in his area for a great deal.
      I would highly suggest you find an original snowblower that might need a little bit of repair (bearings, rotor, sheet metal etc.), because it will make life much easier when you mount it onto your tractor.
      If you are mechanically inclined, you can probably make one work and adapt a reduction gearbox to any existing snowblower, but there might be a lot of modification involved...
      With that said, I hope you find a good solution that works best for you and if you find a solution, please let me know. Regards -Andreas

      @@WorkshopRebuild thanks for the excellent reply! Incredibly informative. I’m moving to a place with a decent amount of property and had my eyes on a 1979 JD 400 with the 60” mower deck. The original Kohler engine was overhauled and now it has 625 hours on it. The asking price is $2400. The hydraulics and PTOs I believe will come in handy in the future for carrying wood around the property with a mini buck front loader that I would eventually buy. My other option is to get a cub cadet GT2554, in mint condition, replaced oversized back tires, a factory snow plow, the 54” deck and weights for $1600. I’m torn. Cub cadet seems like a good deal for mowing and plowing, but the JD400 seems like it has more ways to upgrade to an actual property tractor. Any advice? Thank you in advance. Your videos are great!!

      @WorkshopRebuild  Před 2 lety

      Sorry for my late reply. I always try to respond as fast as I possibly can.
      Both options you have in front of you are very good deals! The JD400 is built more like a tractor compared to the Cub Cadet GT2554.
      In other words, you will be able to get more out of the JD400 when it comes to heavy-duty work. You can find 3 point hitches for a reasonable price and you will have a VERY versatile machine, that will be able to grade, plow and much more.
      The Cub on the other hand is cheaper, but it will act more like a lawn-mower even though it has a 23hp engine in it. It is a great machine with a great turning radius, but I just think the JD400 would suit you better if you're moving to an acreage.
      At the end of the day it's totally up to you, so I hope you choose what works best for you! -Andreas

The Onan is smoother but had lots of failure point issues and requires more maintenance. And trust me I've seen it all. Parts availability and any clever work around also any repowering. We got rid of our Bolens after about 40 years parts like the hydrostatics. Because of parts,Can these be used again for general purpose instead of show? Oh mufflers replacement at an economy price

  • @DrHook1020
    @DrHook1020 Před 2 lety +5

    Definitely prefer the Bolens. I had an HT23 that had the hi/low transmission. John Deere is just an over-priced, overrated wannabe compared to Bolens. Bolens invented the riding tractor, the engine-powered tractor, & the treadle pedal that everyone now uses. They are beefier and stronger. They did it first, they did it best.

    • @WorkshopRebuild
      @WorkshopRebuild  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks for your honest opinion and knowledge you shared here. I am aware of the Bolens HT23, but I did not know that they has the Hi-Lo Transmission. Do you know if it was made by Peerless? The John Deere 400 probably sold well due to the styling/looks (that's just what I think). That is correct FMC had various patents ranging all the way to the foot-control for the hydro! Very cool indeed!! I gave the Bolens many Bonus Points in this video since it has so many neat features. Thanks again, Best regards -Andreas

      I know this is old but I love the something is better than Deere comments, usually red guys, Oliver guys and now a bolens guy. Can someone tell me which one is still standing? If something is better it will with stand but none of them did and now bolens is part of trash mtd. John Deere hate is hilarious to me and usually comes from people who never even owed one.

    I have a 400.
    I wish it had a track lock and foot control forward and back like my LX289.
    Using the loader can be cumbersome at times. Need 3 hands.
    The front AND rear hydraulic is nice on the Bolens and may be added to my 400. That would let me run a hydraulic tiller.
    The Bolens only having H2 wouldn't work for me. I have a loader and 3point.

    • @WorkshopRebuild
      @WorkshopRebuild  Před 2 lety

      A very nice tractor! Those features would be a huge bonus indeed. I've seen some members change the hand control to a foot control, but there must be quite a bit of fab-work involved.
      I fully understand that a loader can be hard to handle while maintaining the forward & reverse! Running extra hoses to the back wouldn't be that hard on the JD400...originally they had an optional kit for the rear auxiliary lines. It's probably cheaper to get them done at an automotive store instead of finding the original kit.
      Correct, H2 wouldn't be sufficient enough for that much hydraulic power needed. H3 is the way to go, but both tractors should be capable of supplying the same amount of pressure as they have the exact same charge pump. I hope you have success on your rear Aux-setup. Best regards Andreas

    Personally when I drive my buddies jd 400 I’m afraid to go in high range it’s scary fast and the steering wobbles side to side the the steering is worn and it’s it’s to control the tractor I think it goes 11 mph top speed

    • @WorkshopRebuild
      @WorkshopRebuild  Před 2 lety

      It is very fast in Hi-Speed and it can be a very bouncy ride on uneven terrain! The seat spring almost makes it worse haha. I hope you feel more safe in Lo-speed. It's actually more than enough, unless you really have to drive a distance. Cheers

      I hope it didn't come over that way! I really don't have a bias for either one of these tractors, nor do I favor one manufacturer over the other. They both have pros and cons and I tried to highlight this in my video. I was hoping it would help some viewers understand the differences between these two garden tractors in case they are looking to get one for themselves.

      @@WorkshopRebuildthings like you prefer to open the hood and re fuel next to a hot engine? Compared to not opening a hot hood, removing a cap and refueling without concern of a hot engine. That screams bias. Also throw some wheel weights on the 400 and it will be heavier than the bolens, according to you, heavier better. Wish it was a comparison video without bias instead of a let me tell you how much i like bolens more than deere
