Hi y'all. Jim from Madrid, Spain (a fellow artist and a New Yorker expat living abroad).
I am a Wildlife & nature painter in watercolor & Gouache, and I also paint on plain air & urban sketching.
Gouache is a real cool medium, opaque and to be used not as watercolor but more as oil painting which is fabulous for that, though you can also use it with more water as an opaque watercolor.
Some great artists that use Gouache in plain air are, for example, Jarred Cullum (from Pennsylvania) - he paints with gouache more like if it were an oil painting and he's really good; and Sarah Burns Studio (a US artist living in Scotland) that does plein air with Gouache a lot and she's building a great database on Gouache paints (she has amazing tutorials, etc.) and she uses gouache in a DRY format when travelling or on plain air (similar to how you would have watercolor when travelling) and she's taught me how to travel with gouache in a more minimalistic and more comfortable way.
I hope this may help others to learn more on this beautiful medium.
Cheers from Sunny Spain!
😁👍😎✌
His choice of subjects is excellent...i mean composition also
So good I’m watching again
I think the difference in the brushes for gouache is that you don't need as high a quality of brush as you do for watercolor because it's a thicker medium and you don't need the same water holding capacity that you do for the more delicate watercolor washes. Also because it's put on with less water you don't need the high quality cotton watercolor paper and can experiment with different types such as mixed media. From what I have read Bristol paper used to be a very common paper to be used for gouache.
A super video, I watched it afterwards and would like to have asked how he keeps his brushes clean when changing colours.
Hello there. Here’s the answer. Just have a large collapsible cup with a quart bottle of clean water close by and then lay the brush on a towel between color shifts…a lot of time though I just mix one color into another. That help?
Gouache cracks if you use thick...i think
