Great video, thank you! Also, what would you advise to take for the bike leg when it comes to bike maintenance? I was thinking to take a minipump, two tubes, multi tool and tire levers, is there anything else that you think would be sensible to take? And what is the bike service assistance on the course like? Is there a truck that goes around and helps out with more severe technical issues?
Best regards
Glad you enjoyed it - make sure to subscribe for more great content to help you prep for Barca and beyond
For me I bring 2 co2 canisters (way faster than pump) 2 tubes and a multi tool - essentially enough to survive a couple of mishaps - and yes will be moto support on route but only 2-3 vans for 3000 + bikes - so always better to be self sufficient- good luck in Caella
I would not recommend this race to anyone, just because it is not a safe race.
The bike course is 4,3 km long, the run course is 600 mters long. The bike course is not flat, 1000m climb, too many turns round abouts. Majortiy is drafting. Running course is on soil and sand mostly, a bit slippery, hard to push if you are good runner.
The town is great, venue is great, spectators are awesome.
And there is too much drafting if you are good swimmer. It is a bad idea to have the 70,3 full on the same days. Too crowded which makes the hole bike race very dangerous.
Hence 1 person died, and 2 were injured in a collison. It was a narrow pass (due to a traffic work). It was a two way pass but it was a such narrow pass that (not more than 3 meters) people thought it was one way pass. I believe due to unsuffcicient signage, athletes had a head on collision. They mentioned this pass during the briefing but there is no way you can guess where it was. After this incident they put many volunteers there warning people to slow down. They should have that from the beginning not after the incident. I saw a guy being heart massaged. From that point on, i was so terrified, and felt sorry for the guy that (later learnt he was a Polish heart surgeant) i lost all my concentration and rode in absolute aimlessness...The worst part is after the race ironman continued celebrations as if nothing had happened: I believe Ironman has absolute responsibility in this accident, and if i was a relative or friend of the polish guy i would definately sue them
Always a tragedy when this happens but sadly not the only race that people lost their lives eg Hamburg, Lathi etc - we have to hope that lessons are learnt and changes made
