AC Bhakti Vedanta Swami Srila Prabhupda had the luxury of taking his time to accept First Initiation and Sanyasi, He waited until it was the right moment at each step of his life. These young western kids were thrown into the most difficult of challenges from a young age and they did more to advance KC than anyone in modern history.
I believe it is time to forgive their short comings and heal wounds if possible and give them the credit they deserve.

Śrila Prabhupada by himself was not specifically planning to accept the order of sannyasa, as he was reluctant to do so. Eventually, Śrila Prabhupada did so under the pressure of some of his Godbrothers. Paramahamsa devotees do not always accept renounced order of life (sannyasa) officially. Some examples are: Śrila Bhaktivinoda Thakura and Śrila Gaura Kisiora Dasa Babaji.

@@manohara7073 Exactly! Western ISKCON devotees had / have a miss understanding of what Sannyasa was. You could marry, have kids and still practice/spread KC. Matter of fact, I believe it is easier to be practice if you are single and living in a temple, free of material entanglement, but also not as genuine. If you go through the fire of family life and still practice, you are much more advanced.
Devotees always forget SP was married with kids, had business, went to college and retired. Only after retirement and his kids were older that he accepted Sannyasa, meaning he had already experienced all the pros and cons of material life.

@@Radhaugo108 Your comments mean so much to me. I am mean really. I am a householder and married with children. I also work full time as a counselor with youth that have had very troubled life. I would not change this for the world. No really, you are making me cry. This week I cooked vegetarian food for my family. Yesterday I cooked vegetarian food for two of my coworkers and they appreciated it so much. These are not my ideas. It is all Krishna. I fall down so much as a devotee, but when life is a struggle I chant rounds when I come home from work, I read a few paragraphs, and cook vegetarian food for people. It warms my heart to know that others are eating prasadam and taking the mercy from Krishna. I have been a devotee and thus a vegetarian for four years now. Today was the first time that I tried ekadasi. I have learned more about myself in the past week and past 24 hours than I have almost in the past year. I am so thankful that I have stumbled upon this path. I will forever be thankful to the devotees that were distributing books at a festival. Thanks again for the comment. I will break my fast in a few minutes and reading what you wrote was icing on the cake. Thank you.

@@Radhaugo108 You seem to imply that young westerners taking sannyasa is a mistake, but Prabhupada gave him sannyasa. If someone threw him in a challenge, it was Prabhupada himself. Do you think Prabhupada made a mistake there? I don’t think so. Even if those sannyasis went into so much trouble later on, NOT taking sannyasa doesn’t mean they wouldn’t have had problems. Probably, without sannyasa, they would have problems anyway and not have done much to spread KC. So I trust Prabhupada’s decision.

Thanks Maharaja to unveil some important lessons from Harikesa's life in ISKCON.
Like you pointed out, sadhana should come first.
It's very unfortunate that big deviations are still going on recently in ISKCON, despite all the warnings. When deviations occur, it is surprising that the GBC does not respond. Recently, on the property of the New Mayapura, in France, foundations were made near the temple in order to erect a large straw wall to protect the temple from so-called evil influences...
This wall of shame remained for several years and was only dismantled in 2020... It is surprising how such stupid speculations can still have the approval of the GBC, so as not to upset such and such a person in charge! One can just imagine what happens when the person is a prominent leader as were the zonal acaryas...
    All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

Hare Krishna Maharaj. I do not want to comment much on what you said since I think we can all agree that you are talking about it only from your own perspective and some facts are wrong.
I am Polish and I was initiated by Harikesa Swami in 1991 and thank to mercy of devotees and Krishna i am still trying to be devotee. Harikesa Swami gave me Srila Prabhupada and Krishna and i will never ever forget about it.
    He saved my life
Only point i want to make is re: Harikesa music. It seems you Maharaj do not like his music for many reasons and this is ok.
However please try to understand this.....we distributed millions of books listening to his music. It was like a food to us....inspirations to go on the streets and distribute books. His music was mostly for his disciples. this can be hard to understand to devotees that did not have that special guru-disciple connection.
I am sure all your disciples love things about you that other devotees might not find "inspiring" . this is normal and there is nothing wrong with that.
Harikesa saved countless lives by bringing us to Srila Prabhupada and Krishna. Let's celebrate that part of his wonderful life

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Srila Prabhupada very much against publicizing the falldowns of his disciples? Though BVS glorifies Harikesa prabhu's seva, he equally, if not more, describes his behavioral deviations. (As far as I know, there were no philosophical ones at the time; those came to be seen later.) Harikesa was invited to New Dwarka (LA) for the Prabhupada Festival two years ago. There was a lot of trepidation by the temple authorities, but, to their credit, they accepted my word that there would be no Prabhupada aparadhe. Harikesa was the star of the show! His recollections of Prabhupada are enshrined on the LA Temple Website. He couldn't have been a better guest. In fact, his appearance in front of devotees was his first in ten years. He is a good soul who went through a dark night. Regurgitating his fall from grace, to me, is a great disservice. Harikesa deserves better. It is one thing to talk off the record about a person's difficulties, but another to go on youtube with it. I feel that the choice to "go public" with all the descriptions of Harikesa's struggles with his own mind should be "off-limits." I think that Srila Prabhupada would agree.

I don't know if Srila Prabhupada was against publicizing the falldowns of his disciples, I assume he was, as you have said so above.
However, I think it is so important with what has happened since the founder-acharya's disappearance for the truth to come out about these devotees. Why? It is simply a matter of *perspective*. And it is some perspective which Bhakti Vikash Swami provides when he mentions both the 'good' and the 'bad'. And you, yourself mention his recollections of Srila Prabhupada in the LA Temple recently - which is a big positive.
A balanced account of his life by the right authorities will lead to a more balanced view of his life among the devotees; and this is the key service which I think that Bhakti Vikash Swami is attempting to provide here.

The fact that he asked the GBC to marry and the GBC didn’t allow is significant. On one hand, shows that he had major respect for GBC and even if he thought it was necessary, he wouldn’t do without their approval. It shows also that the GBC probably didn’t care too much about him on a personal level, they wanted what he could give but didn’t care a lot what could happen to him. It could also be that when he presented such idea, he was a bit crazy, for instance, feeding in his mind the idea of marrying someone who didn’t want to marry him, so it all could have sounded delusional and impractical. Because ultimately it was his decision, if he wanted, he could have said “I need to do this and I’d prefer to have your consent, but if you don’t, I’ll do it anyway because I have to”, then the GBC would have to find a way to accommodate his adjustment, they also wouldn’t just want him to go away like that. Anyway, someone should have listened. Maybe he was too respectful to people who didn’t have his best interest in mind. When huge amounts of money come into the picture, everyone gets a little bit crazy.

I can only try to imagine how difficult it could be to be a leader in Iskcon after Prabhupada’s departure if you saw that other leaders-godbrothers are deviating from Prabhupada’s order. Either someone could become blind to the problems just to survive or there would be so much conflict that they would want to leave. But if you know Prabhupada doesn’t want you to leave either, it could be enough to make you crazy. That could be the reason why he was just working more and more, maybe there was nothing else he could do and if he really stopped to think about it, it would be too much to handle. Maybe, as the rest of Iskcon was not doing so well, there was a huge expectation on him and specially if you bring a lot of money in, people will start to rely on you more. Who knows, maybe even some of his godbrothers gave him bad advice “don’t worry about sadhana, just keep working, after all it’s all for Krishna”. If he began accepting influence of a godbrother who was deviating from Prabhupada, this could explain why he disconnected from Prabhupada to the point of blaming him. People who don’t mind being duplicitous don’t usually go nuts because they just compartimentalize and don’t bother. People who are more simple minded aren’t able to live with too much conflict, either they leave or collapse. The other alternative would be someone being too perverse and then become crazy due to too much offense, but it doesn’t see to be his case, at least as far as it is reported he didn’t break regulative principles even if he was acting so strangely overall. His desire to marry could have been out of a need which wasn’t necessarily lust, maybe he needed support from someone who actually cared about him and wasn’t just using him out of convenience for whatever reason. If he was simply lusty and wild, there would be reports of him having illicit sex and it doesn’t seem to be the case. So, if he was simple minded and sincere, dealing with a lot of conflict and power struggles in a society of godbrothers who were not really following Prabhupada’s order, if he lacked proper association while being under the influence of deviated disciples, this could explain why he did so many good things, went crazy, but still didn’t get involved in anything like a sex scandal. If he had too many material desires, I think we’d be hearing a lot about other types of problems. And if he said something inappropriate when he was already going nuts, it shouldn’t be taken very seriously.

HH Bhakti Vikasa Swami says many important things. Of course, Harikes was a genius without a doubt but the way he threw out leading devotees from his zone sheds some doubt whether he really was a genuine Vaishnava. In 1986 Guru-Gauranga pr had to pack his bag after having built up ISKCON Switzerland. Vegan pr and Ajit pr had to move out after having built up ISKCON Sweden. Prithu pr was forced to Ireland after having made tons of devotees in Germany. Dvarakesa Swami had to quit being the leader in Hungary. Last but not least Harikes also had the Prabhupada disciple book distributors pushed out: "My disciples are doing this important service now". He was kind of a tyrant who wanted to be an absolute dictator in his zone. It seems that from the beginning he had planned not to stay in ISKCON forever. He had planned his exit at one point, so to speak. Of course, we don't know how much money he really took, officially one million. But he surely planned to have enough money for the rest of his life for him and his wife to peacefully live in a villa in Florida. For him, the holy grail was the BBT accounts. He never allowed BBT money to be used for temple construction. So there was never any transparency on how much BBT money accumulated after thirty years of hundreds of European devotees distributing books full-time. Why he got such an affectionate reception in Russia, well, his ancestors originally came from Russia. That's why he still is very active in Russia and even opened a new age center in St. Petersburg.

34:40 Right, When Harikes left his zone crashed very badly. Everything was oriented towards him only so even today this part of the world did not recover. Of course, American devotees had no problem with this. Most American ISKCON leaders even refuse to visit Germany, "These are all Nazis there". That's why Harikes is even considered a hero and they always invite him as an honored guest "Hari Prabhu" for festivals in LA. However this is a wrong understanding about present Germany. As a natural consequence after WWII, politics, economy, education, science, culture, is all run now by East-European Germans, meanwhile born in Germany. Millions of East Europeans live now in Germany. So there is no reason for the American GBCs to turn the German yatra into Dschibuti or Timbuktu. Actually, Prabhupada instructed that, "They should make their temple in Germany even more important than the one in Los Angeles." When ISKCON Germany was destroyed by Hansadutta and Harikes, all Western European countries like Italy, Spain, France, Switzerland, Austria, Benelux, Scandinavia, Portugal, were badly affected and governments reconsidered their dealings with ISKCON. Put ISKCON on the watch-list of possibly being an extremist group.

Whenever I met Harikesa he emanated incredible lonelyness and the inhuman burden he carried because he thought this to be his duty.
Even as his disciple I dearly detested his voice and his music which of course I never shared with my god siblings.
I remember Citesvara. He was very much in fashion for his knowledge of peoples' past lives. After her frustrated many devotees with a very low life before this birth, the enthusiasm about his revelations faded quickly. That was when he shifted to the ghost thing.

No matter how intellectual or genius someone may be in some aspects, they may be very naive socially. If Harikesa was very lonely and having a hard time with that, he could have easily fallen prey to very malicious people. That may have happened in relation to investments in shady businesses, they get you to participate a few times and get a good result and then convince you to invest a huge amount and just cheat you and take all the money away. GBC and leadership, even if aware of strange dealings maybe were blinded by so much money and allowed him to do whatever as long as he was giving so much money for Mayapur etc.

Not only spoiled it but committed the worst offense of imitating Jesus, God's direct representative, and then falling down, 45 of them. So they were forced to change the temple sign from "authorized spiritual movement" into Hindu Mandir.

Jennifer Blankenship, I can perhaps answer your question. The so-called Vibhuti pills, which Citteswara Prabhu administrated to Harikesha (after an acute hospitalisation in Sweden some time in the middle of 1980's) were supposedly made from holy ashes but actually contained strong psychopharmaceutical substances. These kinds of medicines can be easily obtained in India, and the person who administrated them later on confessed, when asked by a former disciple of HP, that he wanted to help Harikesha to remain a sannyasa by tricking him to take these pills for years. This particular medicine had serious side-effects and had therefore not been used in Europe for half a century - this was all found out when one Swedish disciple (my husband) sent the pills to a forensic laboratory to be examined during the autumn of 1997. Apparently Harikesha had been doubting the medication for a longer time already, and finally decided to stop taking them altogether during the late summer of 1997. Inevitably this led to a severe psychosis, as is expected when a strong psychiatric medicine is stopped abruptly. As if this was not a tragedy in itself, some people started recording him when he was in this psychotic state of mind, and circulating the recordings within ISKCON channels. The rest is history. Some things are mixed up in this recount by Bhakti Vikasa Swami, and he obviously does not have exact knowledge of details, but it is still a refreshingly honest and non-envious way of telling the story.

Vaishnava Apradha in the name of Guru Seva is not Devotional Service. It is not pleasing to Krishna. Krishna will not protect such a devotee
Ramanujacharya had 2 disciples go to a rich devotees house to prepare food for a Padikrama of devotees. The 2 disciples came back to Ramanujacharya and they said that the rich devotee is preparing a nice feast. Ramanujacharya asked : How did he receive the 2 of you. Did he give you a glass of water or something to eat...... No no he was too busy preparing for your arrival. Ramanujacharya said : I won't go there. I don't like to go where Vaishnava's are neglected, even if it is in my Service.
So Ramanujacharya took his Padikrama of devotees to a poor devotees home in the same area.

It seems that you have been talking about the fall down of a once a great devotee mostly from stories heard from other devotees. I don't understand how this description may be accepted as bona-fide as you yourself dislike this kind of speculative view about other devotees, including about yourself.

As a formar disciple who took her time to do some research after Harikesa Dasa left I disagree. He was a very well behaved and self contained person. Besides he was very lonely in his exposed position. He showed all signs of Burn Out and depression and never allowed himself to consult a bona fide medical specialist.
Harikesa burdened himself with an inhuman load of tasks being a sensitive, vulnerable human being.
He didn't take money with him when he left but struggled like any of us, who need to maintain ourselves.
Although him leaving us disciples was a painful experience I have no bad feelings towards him. A character trait of a vaishnava is deep empathy and being able to forgive.

People wonder why these things go bad and from the outside I can see a few major reasons. For one you can't take a bunch of young people and forbid sex lol you'll end up with a bunch of kids with their hormones going crazy horny as all heck and you obviously run into big problems there. Two you can't take a person and put them in a position as being worshipped like a god. There's just to much that can go wrong and we've seen this with so many Gurus! Your just not gonna find many like Prabhupad who are old past sexual needs and past material wants and only wants to serve God. In my mind you have to be old been in the philosophy since birth before you should be in charge of anyone elses spirituality!! Younger men are just not in a physical or mental condition to truly live by the principles. I'm also thinking you can study this philosophy and be devoted to Krishna without joining any group! All the information is available now. I honestly don't think children should be removed from their parents until teenage years when they can decide for themselves what they want to do.

Capability to follow Brahmacharya depends on many factors like the submission to Guru, good training, following the orders of Guru etc. Age does play a role but is not the most important factor.
In ISKCON we have many Brahmacharis who are strictly following brahmacharya vrata. Our own Guru Maharaj HH Bhakti Vikas Swami Maharaj became a Brahmachary at the age of 18 year and he is an ideal Brahmachary even at the age of 67 years. We have many other Sannyasis in Iskcon who are also following this vrata since their youth. Guru Maharaj has written a book “Brahmcharya in Krishna consciousness” which is like a “user’s manual” for all the brahmacaris. It is like a daily diet for all brahmacharis in ISKCON. So you may also kindly read this book if you wish to get into this ashram.
Also note that Srila Prabhupada is the Yuga Acharya and hence potent enough to create many sincere Gurus. His blessing, his training, his mercy is so great that many of his disciples are able to repeat the message of Parampara as it is and hence they are also playing the roles of perfect Gurus.
Regarding your point that since Srila Prabhupad was old and hence was above Sex desire is also not correct. There are many old people whose senses are not strong enough to indulge in this act but they still have a strong desire. So it’s not really about age, it’s about the mercy of ones Guru which is reflected in the sincere following of a disciple.
In our gurukuls, our boys are given very nice training under the care of able Gurus and many of them end up becoming very good Brahmacharis. Hence I request you to not rely so much on your mind but rather take instructions as per the advise of Krishna. Please refer the following verse, take shelter of a Guru, Serve him submissively and then inquire about the real truth and then you will be able to understand. One cannot become a heart sergeon just by reading the books or information on internet, one needs to learn from a proper teacher. Similarly please follow the following verse and perfect your life.
      Bg. 4.34
      तद्विद्धि प्रणिपातेन परिप्रश्न‍ेन सेवया ।
