    $37 to get the self propel working? WAY worth it. I just had to replace the drive wheels on my Toro Recycler, and they were $37.81 delivered.

    I'm going out on a limb to say this repaired mower will last longer than its brand new, battery powered counterpart.

    A couple days ago I had done my Brute like this with the high rear wheel.. had some issues with replacing the whole self propelled system but pushed through… just need to buy a 22”Blade for it.
    Great Job on the Black Max!

    The Snapper Ninja I am working on for a friend is the first self propelled mower I have ever used. The system was seized when he brought it to me, but I have managed to at least get that working properly. You get a pretty good workout with it on the highest speed setting, lol. I am going to try to find one for myself now.

    I used to lube back of that metal gear, theres lobes, little metal rod and end of drive shaft with hole in it, where little rod goes in. All of that can rust, wear and die. I used to lube plastic gear aswell, to precevent such wear as in video. Polyurethane grease work good. Yes, dirt does attache to grease, but not on contract suface, but on nearby surface, creating some type of shield over it.

    I found out that HOP stands for Husqvarna Outdoor Products, alao known as AYP. They made many Craftsman mowers and tractors before SBD bought the rights to Craftsman. Another viewer stated that it is a Husqvarna deck, biws out like the older Craftsman, and he us correct. I had a great experience last September in securing a new deck for my 2004 Craftsman Lawn teactor that rusted out.

    I would recommend changing the one side drive gear as well. It looked like the teeth on it were pretty well worn down, and that will likely contribute to the plastic wheel teeth wearing out quicker on the new wheels.. As for why the plastic teeth wear out, I attribute it to gunk on the axles causing rolling resistance which the metal drive gears will always win that battle against the plastic over time. I suspect that people who keep the wheels turning no matter what, then plop them down to start moving again....that sudden change in speed could possibly contribute as well. Well worth the cost of parts, though! That's the last era of mowers where I feel like the decks and other parts were really made with decent materials.

  • @philliphall5198
    @philliphall5198 Před 5 měsíci

    The rusty shaft caused the plastic gears to fail twice as fast, removing any clean them pretty often, lubricants are a must on the axle shaft 😊😊😊

    As a full time lawn equipment tech i can tell you people will go a long way to have the self propell fixed, i once had a honda with a bad 3 speed transmission in, a new transmission was gonna cost around 400 euro, we called the customer to tell them and they told us to go ahaid and order it
    It also needed a speed selector cable wich so with parst and labor the customer paid over 500 euro
    So id say 37 dollars really aint bad

    You can flip those gears around. You see the wear. They only grip half the teeth on the wheels so flipping the gears will prolong eating up the wheel teeth.

    I never really understood the purpose of a front drive mower. The tires just spin the grass especially after the bag get some weight in it and of course you have no power for turns or lifting the ftont. I think the old Toro Whirlwind and Grassmaster were the only front drivers that actually pulled the mower. And high wheel front drive? Thats kinda like a lifted four wheel drive with 22" low profile wheels all around.

    • @INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE
      @INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE  Před 5 měsíci

      the answer is pretty easy, cost. The cost to make a rear drive unit, is a bit more expensive because it has to do a lot of "work" in comparison to what the FWD units do. You are right, these don't pull very hard, but I always considered this more of an "assisted" drive system.

    • @INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE
      @INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE  Před 5 měsíci +1

      yes, I think it's worth fixing, More than likely it could be the Lower oil seal, or the valve cover gasket. These items are cheap in comparison to a new mower.

    It was absilutely worth the $$$ to get the self propelled function working. I wouldn't be without it!
    A question for you, please. I have an old lawn edger I picked up on the curb. It runs fine, but leaks oil badly. It has a B&S 3.5 hp model 91212, code 0189-01. I suspect the crankshaft seal on the output is the problem. Is this seal replaceable from the outside, or will I have to open the motor up to replace it from the inside? My mower has RWD & non adjustable cable; the self propel works but won't disengage! The self propel bar is sloppy,loose. This happened after new belt put on. It worked great then suddenly RWD self propel wouldn't disengage & mower won't roll backwards. I noticed that on the top part of the cable where it is visible above the shearing & connects to the self propel handle bar it's bent. Do u have any videos on this problem? Its a POWERSMART 196cc RWD 22" self propel mower that for almost 5 years has been great mower.
