Some of Reg's statements like here saying Hearns was like a Baby Giraffe going for his first walk or another fight saying "He's hanging on for dear life like a sailor clinging to the mast" or "Hanging on like wet laundry" said about one fella "He's like a walking hat rack, hardly strikes terror into your eyes" said kid Milo looked like a sawn off George Foreman, never meaning any offence just says it as he sees it,very clever bloke really very well liked was Reg.
He was at Normandy on D day and he stepped out of a Sherman tank straight on to a mine and it blew his leg off,hes had a false leg since 1944 so 41 years since then on this day 15 April 1985,15th April, same date TITANIC sank. Sorry for the history lesson lol. Loved Reg though.

One of my favorite fights on ITV, because both Marvin Hagler and Tommy Hearns both went to war and in the first it was just that. The late Reg Gutteridge and the former world welterweight champion Don Curry both on the mike in Las Vegas, thirty-five years ago. Also, my other favorite ITV boxing epics are Sugar Ray Leonard against Roberto Duran and Tommy Hearns thirty years ago and thirty one years ago and both Reg Gutteridge describing these battles. Nick gives us more ITV boxing classics from the late voice of boxing on the working class channel Reg Gutteridge who will never be forgotten. From Birmingham to Las Vegas and from Manchester to Tokyo Reg has been commentating on ITV especially on World of Sport

Canelo knows he’d be KO d in 1 by Hearns and be out on his back in maybe three by Hagler.

@@Yette these Hearns guys hang on to this broken hand forever (and Hearns was a great fighter!), but Hagler beat the shit out of Tommy from the jump, he ate every one of Hearns's best punches and just kept coming forward. Anyone honest who watches the fight can see this! Just look at the end of round 2. "In-fighting" was Hagler's specialty, but this was joined with a MONSTER chin. If only Ray Leonard tried the same strategy! Marvin would have destroyed him. The English guy's call on this match was spot on, "even though Hearns weighed a half a pound more than Hagler, he was still the smaller man." Exactly! And Hearns was a GREAT fighter! But trying to "out tough" Hagler was an INSANE strategy. Very few tougher boxers in the history of boxing, if any!

Hearns said he broke his right hand on Hagler’s head with his first solid punch. I think it’s at 0:54. Said he realized that Hagler’s head was a weapon and that’s why he shaved it. Said it felt like punching a bowling ball.
Punching Hagler after that, especially in the head, must have been horrific. Yet he did for two and a half more rounds. But between the broken hand and Hagler coming right at him, applying incredible pressure and blows to the body and head, no way Hearns survives.
I’ve often wondered if Hearns could have won the fight if his hand had not been broken. Probably not, because he was also tiring. But maybe, since he would have been able to throw harder punches to Hagler’s head.

I actually saw this when it happened -- through closed circuit TV. I never get tired of watching it, over and over, through the years. Legendary fight between two great fighters. I sure agree with commenters who idolized Hagler, one of the greatest, perhaps the greatest, middleweight. But back then I was scared of Hearns and a lot of fans naiively compared these two via their common opponent, Duran, and going into this fight most people were saying Hagler needed to stay away from Hearns and go the distance. I'm sure Marvin was pissed that anyone would think he needed to do that against a true welterweight and, as Curry discussed here, it was really the other way around. But you can see that Hagler opens up with a thundering attack and, like many warriors, Hearns just could not help but get into a slugfest. If you're a fan you've seen that kind of fight many times, usually great fights. But here Hearns was simply outgunned by the true middleweight. I later found out how classy Hearns was outside the ring. I believe he changed weight too many times and fought too many big fights, it took its toll. I read somewhere someone said he's now broke?! Also I always love to hear British commentary.

Curry selling Hearns short...Hearns just couldn't keep pace and ran out of gas and legs ,as he was wont to do......Hagler had the better legs ,but was still taking one hell of a walloping . Hagler would have been lucky to have lasted 12 at that level of punishment , but Hearns needed a lot more than luck to get there...

      @IanBillen Před 2 lety +1

He really sold Hearns short by saying Tommy Hearns fought the wrong type of fight from the start. Look at how Hagler went at and after him .. he gave Hearns no choice but to fight a war. Hearns tried to move even as early as the first round to a point but Hagler was so relentless in the first round ... he was more than cutting off the ring .. he was actually quickly walking Hearns down even putting one foot in front of the other at points. Hearns fought like that in round one .. which took so much out of him (and Marvin) basically because Hagler gave him no choice. Hagler knew to beat Tommy he HAD to stay close and make it a war. He knew staying outside or going slow could have been his doom.

You must have watched a different fight ti me.
I saw Hearns THROW a lot of big swinging punches. Very few connected, and only 1 had any impact.
Hagler had him on the run from the bell.
To bd honest, Hearns didn't have much to offer.
Since this fight, it became known that he had a fragile chin.
But he put on a great show, which is now LEGEND.

What about RAPPERS they say the "N" words throughout everything they sing which is an INSULT to their OWN race that sales on the market.. So before you ZAP someone do your research first .. I never spoke any racist.. tell Hearns or Hagler family they are not black.. see what answer you get . 😸🤐😸🤐

He didn't really have a chance to. Hearns got to him right away and I think Duran wasn't sure what to do. Duran's worst loss but he came back. Also Duran's loss to Benitez was kind of embarrassing.

It was a fake stoppage. The signal from the referee to ringside officials came when he checked on haglers cut. Hearns gave it his all but when they realised he couldn't KO hagler early on and he was gassed they cashed him out.
