I was lucky enough to meet Jerry, Dick and Bob at the world harmonica championships in Jersey 1987. Bob and I spent sometime together and he taught me to play this. I also met Al Pogson who is the person that wrote the score, another amazing man .

I just came from Goodwill store and was looking through records and came across The Harmonicats. Never heard of them but photo in cover was enough to get me to spend 1.00 on album selected favorites. I love finding such cool and totally unique sounding musicians. Love it

I was lucky enough to have seen them live in Chicago. Also, there was a local variety show in Chicago. It was Jim Moran, the Courtesy Man, a Hudson, then Ford dealer. He had them on about 2 or 3 times a year. This is one of my very favorite tunes.

    Dear Jerry and guys,
Thanks for the memories. I saw and heard you guys perform live in Des Moines, IA in the early 60's and I was hooked. Rich harmony. I was about 8yrs, old at that time, but I have some of your albums and I listen to them regularly. "Peg" is still the best, but "Sabre Dance" is great, as are they all. Bless you guys for bringing so much happiness, in an unhappy world.

The chest mics are Shure 315s in custom shells mounted on old WWII military issue chest plates. You can still find the 315s on ebay, but they aren't cheap, and the ribbons often need to be replaced. the custom shells are almost impossible to find, but you could probably make your own if you had access to a milling machine.

You're pretty much correct, At that time, echo was being used on voice recordings. It was the Cat's engineer, Bill Putnam, who engineered at the big voice recording studio in Chicago, Universal, that put echo so prominently in the Cats recordings. And to do so, he ran a speaker to the men's room which was made of ceramic tile which gave it a boomy sound and placed a microphone in front of it. This was unheard of at the time as there was no echo machines invented yet.

This may be my all-time favorite recording, remembering it of course from my youth in Milwaukee...but its not about 'remembering' or 'youth' -- it's just that it's such a great, evocative, touching, and (I now appreciate) relaxing sound.
And for those hop-hop or electronica fans who may be curious just exactly HOW SLOW this beat really is, I have the answer for you: It's 64bpm. :)

Between Aug.- Sept. 1945, you performed on the same night as my mom, who went by her stage name, Marie Claire. She was a dancer/contortionist who toured w/ the USO. I have Jerry Murad's and Al Fiorentino autographs in one of her 5 autograph books. I also have an autographed photo you gave her. Maybe you remember her?
She married in 1944 and I am the youngest (58) of her six children she had.
