The orange island cant be filler
Because Charizard obeying and catching Snorlax are some of the most important things that happenend to him in the anime
If it were filler than none of those stuff would matter

    • @vaporterra
      @vaporterra Před 5 lety +106

It’s filler in the sense that they created this arc for the anime to bide time until Gold and Silver were released worldwide to continue to the Johto anime. But yeah there’s still important events that happen including Tracy (yes he’s still Oak’s assistant so it counts) and Misty catching Poliwag

    • @animewizard2029

Agreed Charizard and Snorlax are two of Ash's ace pokemon, and he wouldn't have either of them without the orange islands.

Filler =/= non-canon, not in this case.
Battle Frontier would be considered filler by many, but it is still very much canon.

@@IamCanadian3333 The battle frontier is definitely not filler because in diamond and pearl Ash meets Brandon again and Paul gets opportunity to battle him.
And Ash immediately realized the battle pyramid when he saw it, and Paul was shocked when he found out Ash managed to beat it.

I feel like calling the Orange Islands saga "filler" is undercutting just how important it was to Ash's character development during it. Sure the Orange League isn't as grand as the major regional Leagues are, but let's not overlook that this was and is so far the only canonical tournament Ash has won. Just because it's exclusive to the anime doesn't mean it has no other worth to it.
Ash was literally fresh from a humiliating loss in the Indigo League and his adventures in the Orange Islands and victory in its league was a real stepping stone to his overall growth... One that helped push him further by the time he went to Johto. Really, while Johto continued to highlight Ash's innate skills as a Trainer and Battler, the Orange Islands was the one that truly pivoted Ash to start honing his skills for the better. People give it little credit than what it truly deserves.

I really love the Orange League saga tbh. It really did a lot to develop Ash as a character and as a trainer. When you compare him to how he is here to how he was in the Indigo League saga, it's very clear that he improved and developed quite a lot and was the start of his development as a legitimately skilled trainer. We see that he actually wins his battles and badges through sheer skill and not just given them like in the Indigo saga. Not to mention finally earning the respect of his Charizard. Even if it it's not part of the main games, I don't think the Orange League saga is any less important than the other sagas.
Also, on a side note, I honestly like Tracey. Sure, he's no Brock but he's still a pretty cool character in his own right

Is it really accurate to call this filler? Filler is a term you use when an anime is being adapted from a manga, and the anime adds in extra story lines. The pokemon anime isn't an adaption though, it's an original product, so I don't think the anime can have filler episodes.

Its more like an adaptation of the videogames so by that sense it kinda makes it filler as the orange island were never seen once in any of the 8 generations, main games or side games.. Love how Pikachu was all the rage for taking the last hp off dragonite. If charizard hadn’t taken that much damage from electabuzz then he would’ve taken out the dragonite and what’s Pikachu be strong against then

Thank you for doing an episode on the orange Island League because like you said a lot of people ever look at or don't count it but I do count it. I count it so much that I consider this his first championship and not alola. Also if you pay attention to journey in the beginning of it he has the orange Island League championship trophy

How fuck, I never occurred to me how OP Drake’s Dragonite was. It literally took out Charizard with 2 hits then just destroyed Taurus and Squirtle

Gianluca Baldacchino I honestly hope not. I kinda hate the way the anime OPs certain Pokémon. Don’t get me wrong, Dragonite is definitely one of the best Pokémon in the game/anime but Ash has plenty of OP Pokémon (Charizard, Pikachu, Snorlax, Sceptile, Swellow, Infernape), his Dragonite doesn’t need to be OP but it can be strong. I’ll be fine with it being the level of Krookodile

The Orange Islands could be seen as a predecessor to the Battle Frontier, where each location has a gimmick which the battle is based around, even is the anime didn’t translate the the gimmick of each facility with as much faithfulness. Some of the gimmicks in the Emerald Battle Frontier probably wouldn’t translate to the anime very well anyway, and seeing Ash’s Charizard take on an Articuno was still very cool.
