The big reason why muzzle loaded rifles were used in the civil war was logistics. Even with repeating rifles around, generals thought soldiers would be wasting all their ammo in no time with such weapons!
We are going to do an episode on General Ripley who was the head of the U.S. Ord and why he hated new technology. Large part has to do with cost of the gun, ammunition, and how do you get production of both to the needed level.
