  • In today’s episode, I will be taking out to the range my 1855 Springfield Rifled Musket. This particular rifle is one of high quality made in Italy by Chiappa which is one of few reproduction companies that make excellent muskets. This video will be my first of a rifled musket, since my other range videos so far have been flintlock smoothbores.
The projectile I will be shooting today is the 500gr Minie Ball which was used highly in the American Civil War. I will be using self contained cartridges which I crafted myself with about 65grs of 2F Goex black powder. The cartridges are not 100% historically accurate, but there as close as you can get at least for my liking.
I will be testing the accuracy of this particular weapon at 25, 50, and 75 yards. My target in the video will be a standard man size target, which would’ve been what this particular weapon was intended for. I am slightly out of practice and not a marksman, so do not expect hole in hole accuracy for me in this video😂.
Make sure to check out The Jefferson Arsenal for all your black powder needs.

Thank you so much for watching!👍🏻

Great video. I am glad you took the time to show the audience how you prepare the musket for loading beginning with popping caps. I think this is the only video that has ever covered that bit of pre-shooting prep.

That’s the whole purpose of my channel I want it to be entertaining an educational. Especially to people that might be new to muzzleloading or black powder firearms in general.

I'm very glad to have stumbled upon this video. I have 3 rifled muskets. I bought two, n ArmiSport 1853 Enfield, and a 1861 Springfield.
I bought both between 1993- 1995. They hated my Lyman.575 old style minie.
I bought a Pedersoli 1861 Springfield in 2014 but have never fired it.
My wife and mum both passed away in 2014 and I kinda lost interest in everything till recently.
I saw a couple channels talking about these gun won't shoot minies because they are straight rifled rather than progressive rifled like the originals.
I was very glad to see you address this.
I think I might try to find someone with an Armisport 1842 smoothbore in very good condition that would be interested in swapping for my Pedersoli 1861 Springfield.
I think I need a smoothbore, my old eyes just don't justify a rifle anymore.

The rifle looks fun and is interesting enough as it is, a modern reproduction of the Maynard tape primer for that rifle would make it even more fun.
