A customer brought in power supply and controller board from his sauna, and he said it worked fine until the rain water shorted them out.
Since the 12 volt 3 amp power supply was in such bad shape, I found 20 dollar replacement and thought that would solve the problem, but as I began to look things over, I noticed the controller board had no logic functions telling it what to do from the controls inside of the sauna, and I discovered that rats had eaten right through the wiring, so I soldered it all back together and the unit works fine now. I mentioned that Decon Rat poison can cause Rats to become very aggressive from dehydration, but I mispronounced the name and called it Defcon rat poison. After splicing this wire the repair was successful.

I ended up taking some capsaicin pepper and some weekend pepper spray and mixing it with 99% isopropyl alcohol. And then wiping it all over the wires in my dad's old barn. Nothing ever touch those wires again but obviously it's not the solution which makes the most sense

I had a bunch of flat flex cables... You know the big old kind that had a ton of copper in them... Some of them 6in wide out of industrial equipment. I had them stored temporarily on the bottom level of an older shop and when I came back they had eaten and destroyed dozens of feet. There was just a bit of the connector left and they chewed on the damn plastic of that as well.
I don't know what the hell they're doing with Miles and Miles of copper but I'm guessing making nests and things. Funny thing though actually had some really expensive test leads and irreplaceable probes in a box just next to them and they wouldn't touch them. I guess because of the silicone and higher carbon content in the black leads. I breed the side relief because I had some irreplaceable high-end metrology probes in there

Chipmunks, little groundhogs and things... Lots of things seem to chew on that stuff. I think it all comes down to what the insulation is made out of but they'll take the copper and all if they can

Some people have told me rats destroyed much of the wiring in cars they had stored.

@@hullinstruments I'm a retired telco technician. I've see tons of chewed up vinyl wire insulation over the years. Keeping rodents out of enclosures and pedestals was an endless job. We were told vegetable oil was one of the ingredients in vinyl wire insulation and that's why mice / rats eat it. We used to have places where squirrels would eat aluminum lids and covers up on poles. They left it alone when we provided salt licks.

@@bricknboxer that's wild. Iv seen all kinds of materials....both composites and metals.... destroyed by rodents. Had trail cameras that were basically devoured over a short time.
What you said about salk licks....that makes a lot of sense and is a great idea!

What a nuisance. I've heard others tell the same story of their cars wiring being eaten up by rats.
