  • Have you ever wondered what kind of pitch you have? Maybe you've already tested yourself with a piano or artificially generated sound, but did you know these methods might not work perfectly if you play string instruments? That's why I made this video - to help you test yourself by recognizing sounds made by my 200-year-old cello.
Do you have perfect pitch or relative pitch? How can you find out, and what do these terms even mean? Each kind of pitch recognition has its own advantages. For instance, what is the main advantage of having perfect pitch? And how does relative pitch offer more flexibility, especially when playing with a piano that’s tuned higher or lower than expected?
Watch this video to take the perfect pitch test and relative pitch test specifically designed for string instruments. How many notes did you get right in the relative pitch test? And how did you fare in the perfect pitch test? Let me know in the comments. This video includes absolute pitch training and ear training exercises that are perfect for beginners.
By the way, if you're interested in learning more about ear training notes or relative pitch ear training, this video has got you covered. Let's see how well you can identify the sounds from my cello. Don't forget to share your results!

What kind of pitch do you have?

I have perfectly awful pitch. I flunked ear training in college. Oboe had keys and I learned to play in tune. Cello is a challenge but I have made great progress with intonation.

I heard that the oboe is one of the hardest instruments to play in tune. It is quite special that you can play both instruments.

Relative pitch 5/5 perfect pitch, I’m consistently lower by a half tone!!

That makes it easy to adjust, right?

Our Professor is today in an excellent mood and is practicing ear training - a student's worst nightmare. 5sec is definitely too short for me. 1.a fourth, 2.a major third, then 3&4 two minor thirds, and finally a sixth, as usual, I thought it was a minor one, but it's a major 🙄. Forget about perfect pitch. The only "perfect" I had was the unique ability to recognize the melody of the entire family's door keys 🤣🤣🤣

I think that you are underestimating you talents - talking about the difference about major and minor sixth requires a solid understanding of music theory!

Each note, my guess was 1 tone lower.
I did better with the relative pitch.

I got 4/5 for each and was wrong by a half step for the others. But I don’t think I have perfect pitch? I can’t do this on any other instrument. Idk 😅

You might have a perfect pitch. This is a very short test - you might need to ask a professional musician to help testing you👍
