- To be a great Fallout 4 builder you need the right tools in your toolbox. I'll show you the top five best building tips to equip your toolbox and maximize your settlement creation experience. Less frustration means more fun!
Note: When I say to use the select button that means the "in-game" select button, not the "out-of-game" select button. On an Xbox One for example, that's the Ⓐ button. Just remember to hold it down.

Just thought this might be useful.
3:33 Tip #1 Arrows and D-Pad.
6:32 Tip #2 3D-Telekinesis.
9:10 Tip #3 Item placement.
13:42 Tip #4 Walking through walls.
20:33 Tip #5 Settlement size glitch.
17:27 Extratip#0 Save often!
And personal thanks from me for Tip #3. Didn't know that you can change the axis. Now It's only need to find out which button makes this on PC :D
Thanks Dennie. I've pinned your comment.
On PC it's SHIFT.
But it doesn't work in construction mode, only in gaming mode. Throw an item out of your inventory, hold the E button (or whatever button you have enabled for interacting) and now you can turn it. When ever you press Shift you change the axis. 😉👍🏻
why wont 3d telekinesis work for me, using the one
What about on ps4?
On ps4 hold x for left right back and forth, and triangle for up and dow
Here in 2024 😅
don’t tell me you’re here after the show
Why would that matter?@lilbutters7484
@@lilbutters7484what’s it to ya😶🌫️
Best case scenario.. more interest... more players.. more incentive to make F5
Same.
When you said something about we all drive different vehicles but on the same road, my eyes were opened.
Yep but ps4 is the 20 year old van with a huge dent on the side
and the xb1 is a prius, does the job by definiton but isnt very good, less power, less speed, less customization.
And then we have the High-End Gaming PC which is a Koenigsegg Agera RS going at 200+ MPH overtaking everyone!

@@mylvin3183 i would have chose something different.... supercars have poor handling in bad situations..... maybe a restored classic muscle like a Daytona
Damn it, I'm watching a fallout builder equivalent of bob ross. This is amazing.
You read my mind
Same thoughts bro XD.
That pfp.. another destiny fan! Is it the will of the traveler? Should all guardians gather to.. play fallout 4?
Nah, Skooled Zone is more like Bob Villa from That Old House. Bob Ross would be SarDeliac, his voice is closer to Ross' and has the happy soft hippie music in the background too.
that explains why i like this channel i just found
It's almost 2022 and this video helped me tremendously with my first real playthrough. Thank you for your service sir!
Same haha, came back after a year and need some refresher, his videos helps a ton
Thinking of another playthrough, I just dread trying to build on ps4. Just a mess.
It's 2022, waited out the PS4 and got the PS5. Level 26 and just found this channel!
@@dk9619 same!! haha
Came here to say this haha
almost 3 years later, and I really didn't know these things! thanks dude.
Well this is embarrassing I’ve been playing since it came out ant I did not know the first one
5 years ago didn't know these things
For pc from ps4 as it relates to the video
ps4/pc
Tip 1 4:48 D pad / Arrow keys or Shift + WASD
Tip 2 6:32 Bumpers / (for flat movement) E + Mouse (for up/down) E + Scroll Wheel
Tip 3 9:14 Press down on LS / hold E to pick up and left or right click to rotate and I believe shift changes axies tho im not sure
Tip 4 13:45 Pick up then cancel / press TAB to cancel a select item
Tip 5 20:40 B / TAB
Fantastic. I think people will appreciate that!
Thank you, also thanks for making such an informative video i wish i had known about this a while ago but I learned it the hard way glad to see someone out there sharing information for the newer players and even some of the older players.
Didn't know about changing the way you rotate items.
I cannot get the building items move up/down or left/right with bumpers on ps4
on ps4 you don't use bumpers for moving up/down, the bumpers make items spin,. Pick up an item in build mode and hold x, then the left stick can make an item move forward/back/left/right
Its 2022 and I'm really trying to set up settlements for the first time. Dude you are such a life saver and you've got a really great flow to your videos.
3 years it took me to find this beautiful tutorial, this could have saved me so much time and so many tears. My hair has been going gray from the amount of stress the last 3 days of building have given me. I appreciate you
After several months of this video being up, I'm so impressed with all the admissions in the comments that even longtime Fallout 4 players didn't know a lot of these tips. That shows you what an honest and mature gaming community we've built here on the channel. 👌
So, on my xbox, I tried doing the axis trick, but every time I pressed select it took me out of workshop mode. Whether I was holding one of the bumpers or not. What am I doing wrong?
EpicSatyr, see the note in the description. :)
Skooled Zone Oh ok, thank you. This helps so much.
Skooled Zone question, do you have a video for effective gardening & where is the best location for such? I would like to get the most out of this for squirrel stew & a few other crafts.
Skooled Zone I bought fallout 4 as a pre-order and didn't know a lot of vertical movement.
I play on an Xbox One and was just given Fallout 4 this Christmas. I’m at the stage of starting to build my first settlement or at least home base. I’ve watch tons of how to videos on CZcams but none of them explained which buttons did what on an Xbox . Most of them assume you know all this stuff so I’ve spent hours trying to figure it out. So, for me, this is SERIOUSLY...THE ... BEST!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! You have saved me hours and hours of boring research and given me back the fun of playing. I think I’ll binge watch all your other videos now and save myself a lot of frustration! I’d share this with everyone I know except, in my world, I’m the only one who games. I’m in my early 50’s with grown children, and the few friends I have think I’m a bit weird for playing games. My kids love it though lol. Anyway, thanks again! Thanks for NOT assuming everyone knows this stuff! Brilliant tutorial!
That's awesome Angela. Glad the videos are helping. You should check out my Game Tutor playlist as well: bit.ly/game-tutorials
Wow, 50 years old and you play video games, that's awesome! Dedication.
Angela - 50's not that old (58)
I'm 48 and the only one in my group who play games. Awesome to know there are others in my age group who plays.
52 here. Not so strange when you consider that I was born the same year the gaming console was invented. I grew up playing on many different systems. Inellivision was my favorite.
For anyone coming back to fallout 4 with the fallout tv show wave, this playlist is amazing and extremely underrated.
4 years..... starting into space... d pad.. omg, why???? Thank you so much. I finally had the patience with this trick to start work on vault 88. Because of your tips I was able to get my 88 framework started. And yes. You can get all your floors and walls flush perfect to lead back to the main room as well as the water purifier room. Was able to connect an atrium in here and a reverse wall in the middle atrium wall about a foot from the purifier connector. Couldn't have done it without you
Does anybody actually hate you? You’re such a likable person. Great video!
Thanks Daniel. That was really nice of you to say. 😁 I do get some hate comments once in a while but they're usually just from trolls.
@Old school Pete 😂
I love coming back to these vids every time I start up another play through. It's so useful. You really are a master at this game.
Back against haha. These really are the best videos for fallout 4 settlement building.
I was today years old when I learned about left and right bumpers to move items around without changing the player location. Bravo!
I loved the acknowledgement of multiple consoles/platforms without arguments about X being better than Y. Wholesome stuff! We all have our personal preferences but it doesn't matter, it's all about the game :)
xbox to playstation is a=x b=o y=triangle x=square rb=r1 rt=r2 sticks are L and R 3 trackpad = middle touchpad used to enter and exit workshop mode remotely ps also has a share button to quickly take screenshots and record videos.
valiant void oh thanks it's like I never could've figured that out
Evander Espinoza idk if you're being sarcastic or not but he is just trying to help
did you realize that you don't HAVE to write a comment? the creator of this video actually said that if you were a PS4 gamer or PC gamer, he would enjoy it if you helped other people, like NEW people that don't know about the PS4 or the game (because a lot of people got Fallout 4 with the PS4) and they don't know the controls,. I understand if i seem like a dumb idiot trying to lecture you, or i don't know something you do, or whatever. But please put some thought into your comments.
B=o y XD
6 years later… I learned about the up arrow and no longer look for empty spaces
I'm new to this because I'm just now trying to work on building cool settlements.
For PS4 users, here's the controls for tip #2 - "3D Telekinesis"
Hold x until your object is selected and then hit and hold x again. Then use the left stick to move around. For up and down, hold x until selected and then hold L1 and use the left stick.
Took me a while to figure out!
Thanks for helping your fellow PS4 users out Amanda! :)
I love how charismatic you are and your sense of humor, ever since I got FO4, (kinda recently) you have been one the one of the only youtubers I have watched. keep it up man!
His voice and delivery is similar but focuses on lore more then settlement building
So all that practice I did in Skyrim for placing items is useless now??
🤣
I know I just finally started playing fallout 4 goty I tried so long to do it the Skyrim way lol I found you can spin the items so I figured I'm missing something glad I found this video
😂🤣😂
Bruh, placing books in the case at the house in Skingrad in Oblivion. Hours of my life for a perfect house no one would ever see.

Hello from 2023, Fallout 4 is still fun and your videos are a very useful set of tools for getting back into Fallout 4 and the joys of settlement building. Thanks from the future
To change axis of rotation (9:14) on PC, use your sprint button . Took me a while to figure this out since I have sprint remapped to the middle mouse button. Great tutorials even if you use some mods. The fact that this comment thread is still alive after 5 years is testament to that. Thanks!
Thank you for this comment a year ago! I have just gotten back into the game and have researched EVERYWHERE how to change the axis when placing items and everyone is adamant it cannot be done. I flipped out when I saw this vid, and was so disappointed it was Xbox controls until I saw your comment. My Fallout gaming experience is forever changed :D
It's absolutely crazy that after numerous runs and owning the game on two platforms now, I didn't know you could rotate objects on a different axis, both in & out of settlement building mode.
Nuts, absolutely nuts. Great video, very professional & informal at the same time? Good to listen to.
Have a like mate, great video. May be late to the party here but wanted to chime in anyway!
Years later, this is the most helpful building explanations. I use to play with mods, but thanks to you, I can now build amazing settlements with out them.
This man bleeds enthusiasm.
My friend, I have been playing for almost 7 years. You’ve taught me all sort of new things with this video and several others!! Thank you!!!
I thought Oxhorn had a monopoly on great Fallout 4 videos but I have to say I am impresssed the first two tips were very helpful. I have been playing F4 since the release date in 2015 and still had no idea about tips 1 & 2. You have a new subscriber..... keep 'em coming!!!
It’s incredible how one can still be learning, years after playing a game for the first time. Thanks for the video!
Returning to Fallout in 2021 and needed this refresher course. Much appreciated!
Omg! The change the axis tip is going to help me immensely! Thank you so much! I've been a fan of the series since the first game & ever since Bethesda took over, it's been a great love of mine to decorate my different homes, but I've not played much on a console until Fallout 4!
You changed my view and my perspective on how to deal with console war arguments. Thanks!
I love building and decorating but I would always have trouble placing items on shelves so the x, y and z rotation tip is revolutionary for me, thanks
I JUST found this channel today. I never got too far into the game or too "obsessed" with building in previous playthroughs. But I got back in last week and will definitely be referring to these wonderful lessons for any and all mod-free settlement stuff.
Welcome aboard!
I stopped playing Fallout 4 for over a year but just recently started back up again and I must say, for someone who has over 40 days of game play, I never knew about tip #3. The amount of time and frustration you will save me because of your video has me forever appreciative. Thank you for your dedication to the gaming community as words cannot express how helpful you are. I look forward to watching more of your videos on settlement development and hope you will continue making videos.
Building is one of my favorite parts of the game and I didn’t know most of these. I’m so excited for the rest of the videos!
Also, shout out to the man behind the videos. It’s fun to watch just because of how positive and knowledgeable you are! 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Really appreciate that Caroline! 😊
You have the best tutorials hopefully no one calls you a "console peasant"
Haha, thanks man!
Man, this is EXTREMELY handy. I've put in 300+ hours and I've only just learned a bunch of these things. Very much appreciated man!
May sound crazy but this isn't only for beginners. Thanks man, we in 2019 though
I'm in 2020 ( ⊙‿⊙) (人・㉨・)♡
Robert Carroll same
Not too sure what the year has to do with anything.
Nice you are the reason i started playing fallout 4 learned a LOT from you andin the comments section about this game and history keep up the good work!
That's awesome man, and will do!
Dude, I was straight up schooled with the knowledge you dropped.
Its so great to see positivity, not a subscriber but I admire your ability to roll off the criticisms the creators i watch often will be so negative not that its bad but its just a breath of fresh air.
THANK YOU. I came to CZcams hoping for help on power connectors and got my mind blown by your “3D telekinesis.” 🤯
I’m one of those people who have been obstinately nudging vases right-side up since Fallout 3. You’ve just saved me untold hours of wanting to pull my hair out and possibly take a sledgehammer to my pretty settlements. So, again, thank you SO MUCH for taking the time to make this video. You are a godsend.
I’m not really someone who sits around watching how-to videos, but I do believe I’m going to save myself some headaches and watch some more of your series. Fallout 4 settlement building is not the most intuitive learning experience in the world, and you have been super helpful. 🙏
Even when times are busy I can always find time to fit in some skool
😋
You have a soothing voice.
Thanks for saying so. :)
Goldenderp he does
Like a engineering bob Ross
Goldenderp He does I was shocked.
He has a voice that suggests he builds some great things which all sound like they’re about to explode and he’s permanently chill about it and convinced it’s all good which it probably would be
Playing fallout 4 on my ps5 and needed a refreshing of the building. Thank you again and here I come sanctuary!!!
it's aug 2022 and I just started playing fallout 4 - i love your breakdown. This is helping me learn the basic stuff they just don't tell you!
Thanks Paul, can't wait for the next video, you have already taught me a few things in this one, the handiest tip for me was the left stick axis change!! This will cut down on my frustration level when placing objects.
Perfect 👌
WOW Paul , I didn't know any of this .. I think this is the most informative video I've seen on settlement building..Thanks, you really did a great job and I can't wait to learn more...
That's awesome.
I've been playing fallout 4 since release and I didn't know about the axis manipulations and stick press to change axis! AWESOME!!!
Wait the first tip. MIND BLOWN! the whole time. THE WHOLE!
Since I watched this video I've been using the workshop to place junk and it is amazing. Makes everything much nicer. Good tip to put in the video 👍
Wow! Thanks for this! I'm a PS4 player and its great to see how to do settlements without mods on console! You are great at explaining everything very clearly and concisely! I can't wait to go through all your videos!
Finally, I have been trying to remember Tip #2 3D-Telekinesis for the past 3 years
At first: Thank you for this awesome "No Mods Shop Class" Video!
I'll work on my Settlement Build Skills and searched for awesome settlement builds (with no mods) as I found your class video.
I already knew some of these skills like "Arrows and D-Pad", "3D-Telekinesis" and "Walking through walls". What I learned in your class was changing the axis (Press Stick) at "Item placement" and that I actually don't have to scrap items to reduce building size limit - only to put it back to your box.
Thank you for your class :)
I'll watch your next videos!

Certainly. Thanks for the work you put into that list!
Skooled Zone you're welcome!
Glad I watched this video, learned some things I had no idea about it. I'm a pretty obsessive settlement build nerd so that knowledge is definitely useful to save on frustrations.
Fantastic!
Any time i go back to fallout 4, I refresh by watching the shop class!
Wow, after so many years playing i almost skipped the video thinking i knew all there was, but boy was i wrong! This was extremely helpful, thank you!
I have about 3 weeks of gameplay in fallout 4 and I never really got into building hardcore so a couple of these tips helped me but I can't wait for the harder build tutorials
I can't wait to start putting some of these lessons and tips into my own settlements, I already started on my own settlement and everything!
Nexus r u good at building? Do u have workshop dlc's? Do you have mods?
Hugo Westberg I'm alright but I need improvement, I have all the dlc's and I use some mods but on a separate character.
I don't even play fallout 4 anymore, but it's nice to listen to someone who sounds so friendly and obviously enjoys what he does
The first tip is so obvious. And I even know about this mechanic. But I wasn’t really aware of it. Thanks for reminding me, that this is not just an alternative way to select and deselect things, but it is the much better way. The third tip is pure gold. Never know I can turn this items and I’d never guessed that you can change the coordinate direction. Thanks for these tips. You’re awesome!
Great vid! I consider myself to be a pretty good builder but I didn't know about some of these tips, this was really helpful! Also, you're a pleasure to listen to, great voice and your commentary stays on point. Weirdly, you kinda remind me of Bob Ross doing settlement building :) In some future tutorial, you have to mention putting a happy little turret on a happy little platform or something :)
Thanks for the kind words brotha! Request fulfilled, lol: czcams.com/video/iauUrvDUToA/video.html
I like how easy going you are, good content and keep it up.
👍
5 yrs later and I'm just now finding this vid and learning new things 🤦🤣🤣. Great vid!
Just now finding out how to move objects on different axis. THANK YOU!
I've been playing Fallout 4 for over a year now and on 2 different platforms and some of these even I didn't know about. Can't wait for the next one. :) Also really looking forward to the immersion tour of Vault 42 (I love the Hitchikers' reference there btw!). Keep it up dude!
Awesome Gabriella, I appreciate the cool comment. And you got the reference too! 👍
Hey Paul I learned A lot from this vid thx P.S love this series.
Excellent Bryce!
This video started auto playing and I was going to switch to a different one. But then I heard the whole no room for roadrage thing and wow... I'm watching the video because that was so insightful.
Figured it out, (2024) for the PlayStation 4 & 5, you do the exact same thing for up and down as you do on your Xbox, hold L1 and X, to go up and down, if you want to go back and forth, it's R1 and X. Thank you for helping me find this.
After literally 1000's of hours in Fallout 4 I still never knew about tips 2, 3 and 5.
Great video, thanks.
So cool that I can still teach veterans something. Thanks for letting me know. :)
I am getting back in to fallout 4 and I love your videos! I play sims but I'm not much of a builder. The mechanics are kinda similar. I love how you break everything down. There's no confusion. Thank you so much! I may not be a amateur for long. 😊
Holy crap. Hundreds of hours on this game and this is the first I’m hearing some of these tools. Mind blown!!
The only one I knew was the “walk through wall” tip. All the others, I’ve been blind to for 6 years. Thank you so much, got yourself a new subscription :)
Fantastic. Welcome aboard!
Keys for computer!
To move in the workshop-menu you use the Arrows. To move an object you hold E and the move with your mouse, to move up and down (y axis) you scroll on the mouse wheel. To store an item you press TAB. To srap an item you press R. (I don't now the other keys)
Chinlow Ctrl (or Lshift) + WASD works the same as arrow keys ; ^ )
Wavri Appleseed I discovered that fact by accident when trying to sprint
Officialpoiuytrewq4645 one thing I'll never understand is why Bethesda didn't include half the commands in their control reference page in the manual/pdf.
Here in 2020, stuck in my house due to the coronavirus. Thought I'd jump back into Fallout 4 and building, considering I may be stuck in here for a while. Didn't even know these tips and I owned this game since it came out. Thank you and awesome video
jjbmail1 same lol ever since this virus I been playing fallout again
jjbmail1 lol same
Hi I am a newbie , stuck in the house too! Any idea how to get beds from "floating" or how to fix Water pumps that are not producing?
Preston Baker idk about the beds I have that problem too but water pumps have to be in dirt
@@ellef16 Thanks for the quick reply,, but that's what frustrates me when I place them they appear GREEN, but then do not produce any water, I still get a red zero
The TOP fallout 4 school.... Remember when i was playing on xbox and now rewatching when playing on handheld 😊
I forgot how finicky the building in Fallout 4 was, I'm diving back into it and am sooo grateful for your no mods shop class!!! That's me in the front row, pen and notepad, trying to get learned again!
The third one is so helpful thanks!
Sure thing!
Great tips Paul, and much appreciated. Thanks you are doing awesome!!!
Thanks for the kind words Jason!
Jason Cory ,
I wish I could like this video twice this has been so helpful. Im trying for the peaceful ending were only the institute is destroyed, and as an unforeseen consequence im building lots of settlements. This video alone has spared many hours of frustration during decorating.
Im going to stop mentioning that i just got into the game a century after its release and just comment. lol.
I was going nuts truing to figure out how you rotated items on thier axis and believed you were actually on a computer and had given up on the idea that i would be able to satisfy my OCD by putting things exactly where they should go and faced correctly. lol Even now, what is it 5 years later, your videos are a great help.. A big THANK YOU many years later.
Im not sure if it was luck or if i have to thank the person who maintains your channel for pinning or floating the button keys to use on different platforms at the top. After i originally posted my comment, i was hesitant to look and see if someone had posted the info for PS but i didn't have long to scroll to find the button equivalent for my PS4.
so thank you to that person.
👍
I come back to this video every 2 years when i pickup fallout 4 again
Been playing this game for years.... didnt know any of that. Cheers teach. :)
wow, i've played this game since launch and i'm incredibly surprised about some of the feats displayed! had no idea!
Thank you for this video. I remember my son playing this game when it first came out. Now I am finally starting to play it and these pointers are very helpful! I may watch this one a few times as I get it all down.
this guy is the best
😀
Really nice video, keep it up! I actually play fallout 4 a lot and didn't know most of these. I learned a lot, thanks!
Excellent!
you didn't know about the up/down arrow keys? Hmmmmm....
The year is 2020, several times 100% This game, all trophies on ps4 and achivement on xbox. 800+ hours in this game, and i still had no clue you could move items in xyz angles (tip nr2). Amazing what youtube can teach you. Thanks for this video, even if its a couple of years late by this point :D
Fallout 4 is one of the greatest games of all time. Been playing this since 2015 . 8 years later, still love it.
I’d hire this guy to run my company
*"I was suppose to win a pack of steak knives!"*
Aaron S. 😂
Skooled Zone is one of my favorite fallout 4 channels, love your positivity. Also you have a great voice for commentary!
Played this game since it came out. First 2 tips in my mind is completely blown.
I already want to stick fallout back in the console! These tips will really help, I spent so long trying to get things to stand upright! I was also trying to build a huge farm on abernathy aswell as building up around the towers, I got some farm and about 3/4 stories high before I hit the limit and was bummed out! Now I know this stuff it will really help :)
Thankyou :)
✊
Hey I finally figured out the PS4 controls for moving objects without moving your character. Okay so to move object up and down PS4. Press & hold the Y button and use R3 (rt thumb stick). To move object forward and backward on PS4. Press & hold the X button and use L3 (Lt thumb stick). And to rotate object L2 & R2 (bottom trigger buttoned)
PS4 doesn't have a Y button...
Even though I know that Y=Triangle (as MANY other comments have pointed out), I still found his comment helpful.
I still come back to this channel for tips, ever since I first beat the game and then tried to settlement build
Cheers to you bro! It's late 2023 and I'm actually playing Fallout 4 for the first time (PS4). As anyone who's played it knows, the game doesn't explain much to the player in the form of in-game tutorials, so this video is GOLD! Thank you!!
