I was the graphic designer in a newspaper company in the 80’s. Fresh from graduating I had so many innovative ideas about creating adverts for clients only to be shot down by my boss who criticised my ideas for not conforming to the newspaper’s image. I was so furious I quit. I moved into another industry and to this day, in my 60s I regret not sticking to graphic design looking at all the amazing wonders computer have done for the advertising industry nowadays.
Thanks for that input, conventional companies can be so rigid and kill creativity! Quick Q- I graduate university next year- any career advice you'd have for me based on your own experiences? Thanks!
@@SuperGamingBeast1 if the company is not good, move on but stick with the same industry? Is what I'm getting from the OP
Be humble enough to learn, yet confident enough change. I love it.
All masters are students of their art.
Saw yours and Sam altman's name in paul graham's essays under the thank you section --- you guys are the leaders of the startup culture. really love the way you all keep on giving your knowledge to the world.
Gary, you’re storytelling master! Thank you for taking the team to make these videos. 🙏🏼✨
The lessons are so deep and yet presentation so simple. It says alot about the filter who has been able to reach out to so many dimensions and helped us to see his light (which has always been in ourselves). Another great vid Garry
A thoughtful piece to end the year ... thanks Garry!
I like the Shuhari concept. Thanks for introducing it to me!
Came at the right time as I'm documenting my startup journey and was having an internal debate of whether to pursue or not!
Garry I really appreciate you making these videos. I know how much time it takes and you don't know the impact you give when you make theses. Thank you!
Thanks for watching 👆

Gary, you're really good at telling stories! Thank you for making these videos.
Thanks for the message Garry
Excellent message Garry! I needed to hear this. Happy New Year!
Thanks for your love and support... Tell Kiana I referred you to her for a business investment that 💛❣️ will change your financial life ☝🏻.....
Thank you Garry!!
This is outstanding Garry!
Garry. Just found you. This is good! As a third time company builder I just might finally be at RI…
Thank you, always.
Loved this video!
Happy New Year, Garry.
Thank you.
These phases of development PERFECTLY mirror Beethoven’s phases of composition. Early phase, where he composed mainly in the style of his predecessors. The middle phase, where he adapted and extended this style to fit his artistic vision. The late phase, where he completely broke from the normal conventions and created a higher, fuller music that still mystifies us.
Compare this to the other composers who never grew and stuck with the style of their education forever. They were all forgotten.
Thanks Garry
Am I the only one who has to keep rewatching this just to catch the depth of the meaning here? This is pretty profound but also very well presented!
It is such a good point. Just read the purple cow by Seth Godin and realized that I was walking around with a purple cow, asking brown cows for advice and ended up with a really brown cow. This did not happen with my first company, where I constantly defied that, but falsely concluded I should have listened better. But this is scary stuff. Building the third company where I follow MY beliefs! When not being certain about anything! Is the most wonderful paradox🎉
Late to the party here. Good stuff.
Speaking for me, at least, the real fun starts when you reach the creative phase. The discipline and time it takes to get there in an arena that requires a lot of foundational skill first, such as programming or martial arts, is the battle I find toughest.
Jeet Kune Do was built after learning Wing Chun for many years then iterating to discard wasted movements and increase efficiency/effectiveness.
You can certainly make an entire career out of copy/paste/edit in any field and be extremely successful.
@Garry always dropping High quality content hope to meet you one day and talk about Africa.
Haha 😂.
As soon as i saw the title. I already knew what you were talking about because I am that guy 😂. Still watched the whole video.
Never knew was a term for this. Yeah SHU-HA-RI is definitely the formula to become who I am today.
Yeah, I use whatever is there. I don’t go out and be different if you’re already born different.
The real answer is developing a thick foundation of legitimate knowledge with a thick skin = transformative executions and ideas.
Btw, love the music at the end. No credits in your description?
Incredible insights. Learn the rules and break some. So true.
Thanks for watching 👆

The emphasis on individual creativity (vs. collective) will be interesting to observe as ChatGPT gets widely adopted - since it will incentivize collective creativity rather than individual (in most cases).
Steve Jobs created a real big-bang on Apple technology even he’s not a computer engineer but a genius architect of technology, marketing and sales.

The formula I love for standing out the right way is MAYA
✅ Most
✅ Advanced
✅ Yet
✅ Acceptable.
This is an excellent curriculum to incorporate into the homeschooling program I run for my 8 & 10 year girls
@user-yp5kl6yv1m getting in touch here Garry
Does this mean we should focus on building in web3? Excellent video as always Gary!
Thanks for watching Tell Kiana ⬆️⬆️👆👆 I referred you to her she will introduce you to something highly profitable
@GarryTan With all due respect, it's best not to quote a drug smuggler, tax evader, gold smuggling scoundrel. ' Wild Wild Country' is well worth a watch. Best wishes
Missed the entire point. Where are your own videos?
The video seems to be more on standing out rather than avoiding getting shot down. Personally, I have stood out at times by delivering high-impact work as a dev. This seems to have led to some toxicity in the workplace with colleagues being competitive and shutting down my proposals/solution even when they seem to make the most sense. Anyway, I was hoping to get a better sense of how not to get shot down from the video. Maybe a follow-up vid for advice more focused on that?
Be a study of what came before you and that will let you bend the rules and make new rules
See you soon 🙏
👍👏👏👏
***CONGRATULATIONS GARRY TAN FOR BECOMING PRESIDENT AND CEO OF Y-COMBINATOR***

It's really hard to stand out and not blowing your own trumpet
Garry what is your camera setup? The light glistens off your face like liquid silk dripping from a freshly made clay pot.
Sony FX6 camera, Sigma 35mm f1.2 lens, with Intellytech MEGA LED soft box top left.
The title should have been ...How to be creative
just being first here
like the videos, watch them all. loose the background music, it makes you had to hear.
so basically shu ha ri
Thanks for watching Tell Kiana ⬆️⬆️👆👆 I referred you to her she will introduce you to something highly profitable.
I’m still a vegetable 🥕
You used Thor Ragnarok as example?? Its a comedy movie and nothing in there can be taken seriously. And Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) s the highest rated movie in Marvel.
Especially after Love and Thunder by the same director.
Hi Gary could i get in touch with u directly, but Wechat is unable to work from my app (or country), maybe an email.? I promise i wont spam
