- From humble beginnings in the early 1970s, diligently serving the people of France as a popular and sturdy family runabout, to frightening the hell out of spectators and drivers alike on the dangerous and unpredictable rally stages of Europe, the Renault 5 is one of the world’s most iconic cars. But did Le Car achieve enough to enjoy its place in the rarified atmosphere of automotive adoration? Let’s find out. This is the story of the Renault 5 Maxi Turbo.

Correction: at 8:33 I say Walter Röhrl won the 1982 driver's championship for Audi. This is incorrect, he won driving an Opel Ascona 400.
(extra annoying for me given I have talked about Röhrl winning for Opel in other videos...)
Point still stands. Mouton almost wins, and only someone like Rohrl could pull that off in the rwd Opel.
Thank you for acknowledging the mistake.
You could really say, it won fair and "square"
*daihatsu moove intensifies*
lol
The R5 Maxi is probably my favorite looking hatch ever made, great video!
she THICCC
World's fastest hippo.
Hippos are REALLY FAST
Funniest like
It’s a cute fucking hippo
If only Bumblebee transformed into a R5 and raced in rally 😭🔥🔥🔥
I own one, a nightmare to own but brilliant when it goes right
French cars in a Nutshell 😂
Just the fact they threw an engine in the back of a tiny hatch already makes this car a legend in my eyes.
In 2005, Renault F1 team made an event with some other cars doing a quick lap in Sultanahmet Istanbul because of the first F1 race in Turkey.. One of the cars were Renault 5 Maxi Turbo in blue Philips livery. The way she sound was so loud and wild. Today I still remember the feeling that sound gave me in that day. Such a nice rally machine. Thanks for the video.
They used to do an event in the UK, called World Series, the tickets were free too. Rear engined Meganes, Clio Cup cars ect, then the historic cars.
Seen both the Red Blue liveried one and the Yellow Black and white, a few times. They get hooned around to. Ace little cars
From the base model to the Mid Engine Rally Monsters the original R5 was a Masterpiece ❤️
The good old days where you could finish 13th in a wrc manufacturer championship 😢
I love how the evolution of these videos since the beginning has made this one of my favorite car channels keep up the amazing work and continue growing this channel
It's so much more than just a car ♥️
Man gotta love french rally cars R5, 205, C4, Xsara, Saxo, Dakar/Pikes Peak 405
There's also an interesting fact: The car also won the Superproduction class in the 1987 French Supertouring Championship, driven by Érik Comas.
Fantastic video. Thanks so much. From memory a local privateer R5 won the 1986 Portuguese Rally too after most of the works teams pulled out after the deadly RS200 crash there. Ironically I remember that R5 was later destroyed in another accident. Good footage by the way.
Nice video!
Always love when baby Bono tells me rally stories
Another excellent production and subject matter, nice work man 👌
You are doing some fantastic work and your channel is very interesting. Keep going!
Informative; thank you!
What an awesome video to wake up to. I love your channel. Great style and narration.
Another great documentary. Thank you. ❤
Always loved the Renault 5- Amazing video!❤️
you're a great youtuber, tiff needell vibes, keep it up brutha.
Nice! Thanks for covering some of the french legends in your videos! If you get a chance maybe you can talk to us of the citroen ZX rallye-raid one of those days? These were the hot things on the Dakar rallye raid when I was a kid!
stunning archive footage.
What a fantastic video and awesome work! When I watch your videos I always learn new stuff and gather ideas for my video projects! You're such an inspiration. Keep it up!
8:29 that sick sideway...😮😮😮😮
I am a Renault 5 Maxi Turbo addict!!! Thankyou for your vídeo. From Portugal.
An AWD R5 Maxi Turbo would have dominated WRC, though it remains a iconic pocket hatch rocket dream.
Great look back at its evolution!
Ragnotti is my favourite Rally driver of all times, besides he never achived a WRC title. Is so amazing to see him dancing with his cars!!!
I still remembered the Renault 5 Maxi Turbo from WRC 5 RALLY EVOLVED.
Great work sir thanks for another fantastic informative piece respect 🙏 I love this car and your content about automotive history, renault has a fantastic rich history in motorsport from rally to f1 😊 renault knows how to make savage hot hatches, keep up the great content respect 🙏 🫡
Love this. There is a Renault dealership I see everyday and it has a Turbo 2 roadcar for display and I look at it always. Very cool and beautiful
The Renault 5 is coming back as a new car along with an Alpine sports edition. 😅
Thanks! 👍💪✌
Really good video, love love the Maxi 5 Turbo,
I do suggest though that you look into new BG music, as it's starting to get noticeably repetitive
My family had Renault 5, it was forest green with that umbrella gear stick.
Loved these I have a diecast 1:18 with the red and blue livery
The Production class version was a mad car too !
I love the r5 turbo so much, one day I will have one
You should have more subscribers dude.
Great summary of all of the challenges the engineers faced during development! Oftentimes we see legendary cars like this and without knowing the backstory, assume the car was a smashing success out of the box. Driving in Group B would have been terrifying enough, but I can only imagine the extra layer of difficulty trying to manage something with such a short wheelbase on inadequate tires (tyres 😉) Keep up the good work!
Well, this is a surprise to see you TMS i like to say that renault has a unique history for french car company as they were the first to use turbocharger in f1 (long before honda got involved b.t.w.) there infamous one of espace f1 mpv, multiple championship in touring cars (unless i got it wrong) and for this video rallying in group b with maxi 5 turbo car is there any i missed tms.
@@milfordh.mercado2787 Sounds like a great summary to me👍Good to see you!
@themotorsportstory you too my friend as always see you next time bye now.
More than just a typical French rally car. It's a box with a Warp Drive.
I would love to see a video on the 205 T16
Renault has many remembered cult cars wich sadly often go unnoticed by many enthusiasts along with Alpine, like the Renault 8 Gordini. It's a shame that only one of the modern renaults actually represents the wild sporty side of the brand's past that also seems to have faded away from people's minds with the Clio V6, wich was a failure just like it's true predecesor the renault 5, because "the mother may be a clio but the father isn't and it shows". For some reason, French brands are destined to have done something cool back in the 60/70/80's and then just become another daily grocery getter printer or straight up dissapear. Although to be fair Alpine did resurrect for a bit to bring us the new A110, wich also seems to have flown a bit under the radar after the initial noise.
Surprised how few videos there are for the Porsche 908 on CZcams. Would love to see that one from you!
will have to look into it!
Always look forward to these videos, keep it up 🙌
this car is so satisfying to tame in DR 2.0
love the Le rally 😆
Hope you can do the Lancia Delta S4 and Consulier GTP some day.
So this is a random question, but what happened to the music that usually accompanies the entirety of the videos? It gave so much character and style to the presentation, ngl i did miss it in this one. video itself is very good still tho, just wondering
from an era batman was a police officer
aaah, the good ol' times
Obviously this point has been made time and time again, but sweet niblets is it scary seeing old group B footage of the crowd right on the edge of the road, after a braking zone, on the outside of the corner.
How serious injury and fatalities weren't MORE common I'll never know.
Fun fact, the R5 GTT also ran in group N
The next episode could be about Opel Calibra in DTM/ITC. :)
6:10 was a smooth one
gotta love allpeen
Group B=Bold and Brave. Massive power and high speeds careening around almost striking on lookers. 10:20-10:30 "R5 Turbo didn't perform well in 1983". You don't say. I pretty sure the snow bank agrees.
Hey, le George! Bonjour, le George! Let's stuff le George in le locker.
French at it’s finest
Great narrative!!! great work, thanks man! You speak so clearly that i didnt need subtitles to understand you! Cheers from Argentina!
The Murray with The Jumbo Jetpack.
It's said Ragnotti and his codriver (or other Renault crew) bet "how many parts were left" each stage's end, joking about its awful reliability. The car was mad fast on dry tarmac, but man, it was also said it left a trail of oil and broken leftover parts through the stage 🤣
I always wanted one, but know where I finally earn relatively good money they’ve became insanely expensive!
15 years ago you easily could find the lovely mid engined turbo version for 15k!
Does anyone know what the monster of an engine is at 11.16?
What music do you use?
205 t16 next ?
Walter Röhl wasn't driving for audi in 1982. He was driving for Opel at the time. Michele Mouton (driving for audi) lost out on the championship due to a gearbox change going wrong (and her father dying right before the event).
Tldr: Audi only won the constructors championship in 82.
yes, there is already a pinned comment correcting this mistake
@@automobilisticjust to let you know, it doesn't show as pinned, might want to look into that
Bring back extreme wheel arches
Ye, le Renult Turbo5 rally car
My uncle used to own one of these. not the rally version of course.
ルノーサンクMaix turboサイコウ🎉❤👍👏😍
The Frenchies' boxy rally twingo mf
Walter Röhrl won the Drivers Title in 1982 with Opel not Audi😅
damn! I even say that in other videos that I've done. Total lapse of memory on my part, I'll pin a correction
the R5 Alpine had 93, not 92 HP 😂
First like 😁
Imsa Le car 🤓🤓🤓 1981
if you havent been on a r5 with 6 prople on the way back from a club... did you even have a youth?
Imsa Le car brilliant deceptionin american race
Le car, more like le shit back in the states lmao
Talbot ..not Talbow, they were Britsh not French lol
renault 5 was a pig in it's class. was left in the dust after group b regulations came to be. was fast on tarmac, but eventually was outdone on tarmac by the peugeot 205 t16. it was under powered and overweight.
Please pronounce the manufacturer names properly
which am I pronouncing wrong?
Can you do a video on the Espace F1? That was a bonkers car.
haha maybe, I've got it on the list so I'll talk about it at some point
Very good video. But the Renault 5 was apparently just as trashy as I wanted it to be at the time, just because it was so hideously ugly... A car I was ashamed to look at... It's so unbelievably ugly even today to me. But a big thank you because I was obviously right when I said it was as ugly as it was bad.
Can we get the pegueot 206 ? 😇🫠
