As someone from northeast India, I can feel the pain of the Chinese Indians who had to face all the adversities and racism after the Indo China war. And I want them to know that a lot of Indians care about them and consider them as our own cause they are Indians too! Let peace and love prevail everywhere ❤

I’m Singaporean and I never knew there’s a Chinese community in India! I find it very fascinating seeing ethnically Chinese individuals speaking English with a Tamil accent. It’s really sad that the heritage is disappearing by the day, but I can also understand why people are leaving for a better future. Thank you for the insights!

As an Indian: Thank you for contributing to the story of India. I understand that everyone strives for a better life, whether in their home country or abroad. I wish you the best, and I also wish for you to know that if you still want to call India one of your home countries then you are more than welcome to do so. Personally, I will always consider you as much Indian as myself.
Outside of politics (which I don’t want to talk about), Indians and Chinese get along wherever they live. I have cousins who are married to Chinese women living in America, Canada and Australia. I also know that Indians have been living peacefully in Hong Kong for many generations and are very happy with their Chinese (Cantonese) neighbours.
Personally, I studied in Australia and 2 of my closest friends were from China. They were among the best people I have met abroad: always wanting to pay for our dinners and drinks, and being the best hosts whenever I went for dinner with them, and also some of the most genuine and fun guys to get drunk with. Again, without getting into politics, I hope the people of India and China can continue to get along. We share many things in common despite our differences.

No, China and India never get along well you don't need to wish. The same goes for Vietnam and Philippine for the same reason that is China just wants everything belongs to them! Very greedy country. That attitude certailny causes suspicion amonsgt non-chinese communities in those countries. Chinese still worships their former homeland resisting assimilation, setting up their Chinese schools etc after 300 years just pack up and go back to China, no need to worry about everything thatcis not chinese. Your homeland should wellcome you as the sons and daughters have lost, shouldn't they as China is now very rich , 2nd after US, and powerful!

I live in Calcutta / Kolkata and I am almost 60 years old. Chinese community in Kolkata lived in 1 single address - 47, South Tangra Road. It was and still now a Chinese Fort with 6 entrances or gates only and they used to get opened and closed by the community everyday where non-Chinese were forbidden to enter except the labourers who used to work in the tanneries.
The tannery process practiced by the Chinese was extremely toxic as a result Govt. made Kolkata Leather Complex some 20 years back under Court order due to tremendous pollution level. The pollution was so high that no one used to buy 2nd hand cars owned by the Chinese since the whole cars used to get corroded in no time. It was so high that the labels on Coca Cola Bottles used to get blackened out with three days sitting on the rack.
But the Chinese having very large factories and making tremendous money from Leather product exports never wanted to invest from their earnings to take up a much better and modern facility in the leather complex and hence migrated.
The food joints had always been there, they used to be know as Chinese Eateries with excellent taste and fresh food used to be cooked and served in the same place. These places started to become popular when they started to sell Liquor but without any liquor license. Hence the liquor was sold cheap and anyone can also take bottle of his choice and have it there by paying a bottle fee.
But all these changed since the Govt. was loosing Excise duty and asked them to take proper Liquor license. That also they felt that the Govt. was against them.
There was mismatch with the Chinese sought after lifestyle for big money, flashy cars, costly watches, etc. etc. but their surrounding population was different and only labours used to get very less salaries for doing a hazardous job and they used to get sick after prolonged use of chemicals constantly.
Calcuttan's were always very friendly to them and they enjoyed their food and still now they do. I had many school and college batch mates from the community who have otherwise done extremely well since they integrated into Indian community. Problem was with the people who wanted to remain Chinese only. With only education in Chinese schools never learnt the local language and made a Fortress for themselves and remained cocooned in it.
Mr. Jimmy the blogger here never ventured out the other part of Kolkata. The Bowbazar and Central Calcutta Chinese population who were in Carpentry and wood works, there were famous Chinese Dentists. The Sunday Morning Chinese Breakfast on Phears Lane, Lalbazar is so famous a lot of people from other parts of India come to visit it.
The Chinese school - Ling Liang High School opened in 1949 is still now running well with a lot of students (www.linglianghighschool.com/).
Chinese came to India and specifically West Bengal in 1800's as Salt Factory Workers and many stayed back.
Mr. Jimmy Your research was very poor or I must say you wanted to say what you said for reasons best known to you.

My suspicion is most that left China are the educated and community minded that's why they are willing to build school and continue to donate to all community events. My grandparents left China but I think they always wanted to go back when it "reopens" but it took so many decades and the kids ended up settled already. My granddad was uni educated in HK and his dad was a Judge with generations of wealth and education. My mum's side are also educated and in business. They all are one of the founders in Chinese schools and Chinese social projects in Malaysia. The community funding continues in my dad's generation and I am now also donating money to local causes. My family was believed in helping others, building a good community and we have a good family name / reputation in our town. We were not the super rich but willingly contributed a big portion of our income.
But recently I met some Chinese who are not educated or even thinking education is important, just like to party and live day by day then borrow money from anyone they can.... that is a different kind of Chinese that I've never met in my life. 🤦‍♂️ I have always been a proud Chinese... didn't know stupid Chinese existed.

Generalization is a very bad thing, my friend. Just because you heard some Chinese people being discriminated in India doesn't mean every Chinese is being discriminated against in India. And please, just please stop being on a moral high ground as if there are no vices of ill-treatment against other races in China. There have been a lot of footage of African community being discriminated against in Guangzhou in China. Also Chinese call us Indians using a very vile, racist word called 阿三. That doesn't mean everyone is a bad apple. So that is why please don't generalize people especially considering yourself from a moral high ground.

I'm not sure what kind of propaganda media you read that from. Also the Africans being mistreated videos were completely taken out of context or cherry picked. Many of those videos of Chinese mistreating Africans in China were actually debunked including by French fact check website that despite it being anti-China bias outlet. For example, a video that happened years ago in Malaysia where a Black person robbing a store were beaten up by Malaysians were propagated on Western media as an African student getting beaten up by a group of Chinese. Another video showed Chinese restaurant owners fighting against black diners, which was actually under self defense and happened in New York, not in China. Oh my goodness! That's crazy. My parents migrated to Australia and my grandparents where in Malaysia before. I didn't know Indians took Chinese there for what? For being Chinese? These barbarians always say China have no human rights? That's why to me, they all say "most Chinese left" but didn't want to say much. Must be something very terrible that they can't even say? Everyone knows Malaysian government don't treat Chinese well as we are discriminate. But people are not afraid to say that....
Anyway to be honest, India is a ST country, I'm glad your family left. I've know many Indians, most I know are what my grandparents use to call them "snakes", very deceiving and always slithering around. Be careful they are always plotting.
For example, when Indians moved their business a few doors away, my parents joked that their business will somehow catch fire and claim insurance. I always thought it was a joke. But, after 3 yrs, it happened! And they claimed huge insurance. The fire spread to our business and half burned our stock and even lots of family photos, clothing etc, all gone.
Also many other incidences... makes me think they really are what my grandparents says they are.

Mum's side her grandma has those lotus feet never said they're rich but judging by their mind set and skills having built up lots of businesses and estates in Malaysian makes me think that is what they've always done back in China. But they all went to Malaysia with very little. Built businesses like grocery shops and rubber plantation, houses etc from ground up. Dad's side I thought it's all just all talk they were rich saying granddad went to uni in HK and that's why he spoke English. But turned out the China government asked my dads siblings who ever want some family land can have a small parcel back. Some uncles went back to China was given some land back but not all the family land. Just some. They all know which areas used to be ours as my grandad took everyone back to see his hometown. Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippine, Cambodia, Loas still need the Chinese to run its economy. Why India did not grow as fast because the Indian Government ill treated the Chinese and many left India. Otherwise India will have many middle class, similar to other Asian Countries.

As for the Indian Chinese people it's sad they had to leave , I consider all of them as my family and my ancestors were Chinese as well . But it's really the Indian people who are at fault and Govt for supporting them . And trust me it's American and western people who look down on india , not the other way around .

damnn! i felt a sense of nostalgia while watching this i remember when i was young and resided in Kolkata for 3 years i came to know that there is a China town 2 hrs away from our appartment and when me and my friends visited first in China Town i felt differently it was different vibe those old buildings and shops wow! we'd usually visit China town coz i was fond of Chinese cuisines and culture, i hail from north India and i also wanted to pursue my Engineering degree from China but couldn't make it and ended up here in Europe but i can understand our Indian Chinese community isn't being highlighted and faced many issues related to discrimination and equality i know it could never happen too here in india coz even our Northeastern brothers and sisters are struggling with the same issues day by day but i hope someday every resident of india will be treated equally and respectfully..

Plz understand the whole side of the story. He only showed biased side. There's a comment above from Kolkata guy who mentioned the reason for their population decrease. Don't just blab discrimination n all n drag NE. Everyone in india face discrimination at some point. That doesn't make us leave the country. Its a diverse country. People don't gel up with ech other that quickly if they are different in each state. Its not about bad people but about association. Just like any indian going in east Asia will face way worst discrimination than this. Atleast most of the Indians won't be harsh like rest of the world. They are accepting once you show that you are ready to accept their culture. We have seen multiple instances in countries like south korea etc where there are banners saying indians aren't allowed. That's what you call discrimination 🤦

There is no actual discrimination in India, few instances of discrimination happens to Indian themselves, it's not that anyone hate any community or different races. I think Indians are least racist people. We adapt to and accept every kind of people as long as they are good to us. There are almost 1 dozen religions or communities live in India and everyone is treated equally.

In fact, Chinese migration to India's southern parts is even older than their migration to Singapore. I believe the official timeframe is in the 18th century but it may have been even earlier, during the Ming Dynasty when trade between China and Calcutta flourished
