- On Saturday, 15 July 2023, PIIA held a session on The State of Pakistan’s Economy: What Next?
Speakers:
Dr Kaiser Bengali, eminent economist, former Adviser to the Chief Minister of Sindh for Planning and Development, and head of the Chief Minister’s Policy Reform Unit, Government of Balochistan
Dr Aqdas Afzal, Assistant Professor, Social Development and Policy, School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Habib University
Syed Shabbar Zaidi, former Senior Partner AF Ferguson & Company, and former Chairman, Federal Board of Revenue
Some parts are cut out whenever Sabbar points towards military. That speaks volumes about state of affairs in Pakistan 😂
May you be damned ,things with you aren't any better.

Just one correction for Kaiser sir , INDIAN government abolished Cantonment as INDIAN MILITARY has been insisting that running civilian infrastructure is not their job. So it was INDIAN MILITARY that asked government to abolish Cantonment
Now all cantonment will become like Chndani chawk and most plots will be allotted to MP, MLA, Ministers and other civilians. In any case most cantonment have become filthy as compared to 1947
@@kpdwivedi1672 because before 1947 Brit’s would have shot INDIANS for dirtying the Cantonment, after freedom spitting and throwing rubbish on roads became democratic due to leftist ideology of chacha
What are you talking about? He is nobody's sir ... If he was an expert he would have talked about fauji corporation paying back taxes on the consumer goods and services they produce... But he will not talk about that which is the real issue... And he would also not talk about blasphemy laws another blockage in progress
“Sir”! 🤔
@@kpdwivedi1672 So you saw the cantonments in 1947! Which was the “filthy” Cantonment you have visited?
Bengali nailed it. No nonsense.
Unless Pakistani control their Army 🪖, no development of Pakistan is possible.
Well said.
That’s something which no intellectual will ever say directly.
@@ldnoida001 All intellectuals are spolit brats with enough time in their hands to do arm chair discussions.
@ldnoida001 Because that will be their last day. Missing. The End.
Salute to Dr Qaiser Bengali .. A whole history in a few words speaking with painful voice... A mirror ...
He is Slave of Zardari.
Truth is, Pakistan is a failed country
It was dead culturally socially long back. Then it died economucally
Now its died militarilly as well. No military can function without robust economy. The Generals totally disregarded economy, education
Health. Military is not expert in economy. What Pakistan lost. Midfle East cashed in. Today Dubai is what Karachi was once. Riyadh is going to be new Lahore. They are fundamentally changing to accept diversity, secularism and planning for future oilless world, where tourism and commerce will play big role. Pakistan's ideology has failed
Pakistan has to realise this and learn from Bangladesh, dubai, riyadh. Indians are contributing to growth of middle east. Same indians were thrown out of pakistan. Thats the irony. Middle East is sucking all the talent. Pakistan has become a pest of the region that noone wants
The most incisive shortest summary description of Pakistan.
In urdu it is said ke rogue state of pakistan/napakistan GURBAT JAHALAT DEHSHATGARDI AUR TAMAM JURMO KA MARKAZ HAI.
He detonated Atom boom 🤯💥
Dr Bengali nailed it,in a very short speech he sketched the on going situation confronting Pakistan today
Yes bro. Pakistani are best sketcher, they can make only a picture, they can seen best dream Drama.
Pakistan will have a cantonment economy, well said by Dr. Bengali.
Pakistanis didnt worry about living in the life given by Almighty Allah/God but they worry only the so called life in JANNAT & 72 HURREY after death 😢😢😢

Attendance to listen to these words of eminent sense : 35 ? 20 ? 15 ? In India, during the 1991 forex crisis, I remember, an entire blockbuster- match- sized housefull crowd turned up at Ferozshah Kotla (cricket) stadium in Delhi to listen to a similar series of short talks by economists (and actively react with suggestions and feedback, not just with questions). You could just feel that the janata had an educated interest and eagerness in pulling India out of the hole (that in our case one we had dug with our idiot- Socialist policies). That they keenly felt the humilation of having to mortgage our gold reserves abroad, even if we didn't quite go begging like Pakistan now. Read even the comments here - how many are from Pakistanis ? And also - how many are from Indians ? Indicative of many things I guess.
How many Paxtanis speak or understand English?
@@ldnoida001they understand Arabia
Dil ko bahlanay kay liye ye khiyal achcha hai. That’s the only reason why they hold these programs. 99.99999~% of the people will remain oblivious to these talks by the so called highly intelligent individuals. Ask them to get an world class important job outside of Pakistan if they are such a huge talent.
The same thought was going through my mind. How serious are we as Pakistanis in looking at this situation objectively. Not many views let alone an active discussion. The participants have laid out things remarkably well in black and white. It’s very disheartening.
Exactly What I Was Thinking ...
Kaiser and Shabbar are very reasonable people in Pakistan.
And still there are just 25 people in Attendance ??!?!??!
As always Dr. Kaiser Bengali is to the point in a concise and precise manner. It's a pleasure to hear him speak!!!
😂😂Zaidi is busi to play PUBJI.
No matter how much these intellectuals scream, as long as they don't take out religion from every facet of life and make it a personal matter nothing will ever change.

Shows how back in time Pakistan education syllabus and pattern is . One of panel member never heard that we can do PhD in 2 different disciplines . 😂😂RIP
I have worked for Investment Management firm and was part of the $700 billion portfolio ( Manhattan NYC) and my conclusion after viewing this program that Pakistan will suffer sever pain after few years. Without cutting Military budget by 50% and investing in Human Capital we will not come out of the problems.
Establishment should completely control with ownership not like when economy screwed up blame it democracy and use politicians as a puppet.
Educated and skillful people should leave and don’t waste your time and skills.
'' cutting Military budget by 50% '' Hope you are not living in Pakistan.
''Educated and skillful people should leave '' If all educated people leave the country, it is only jahils who will run the country.
Investment firms are complete fraud. owners of these firms become billionaires and small and medium investors loose their money. bloody hell
How would you stop your top political and military leaders from stealing public money? That's the primary question.
Only person who spoke eloquently and meaningful was Mr Kaiser Bengali. Absolutely on point and sharp rebuke to pak army.
Kaisar Bengali sb is worth listening.
Excellent discussions. Mr. Bengali is an intellectual, Mr. Zaidi a pragmatist & Mr. Aqsad and idealist. Pakistan requires an urgent but balanced & ideal mix of the the three medications suggested by the 3 gentlemen if it wishes to survive as an honourable nation.
Mr. Bingali is nothing but a prejudiced minion.

Contonement Colonisation !! Nicely put by Dr Bengali.
I always reminisce about Late Dr Mahbub-ul-Haq, who spoke so eloquently on economic issues during his days at the planning commissions and later as the Finance Minister.
We must remember that HDI - Human Development Index was pioneered by Late Dr Mahbub-ul-Haq Sahib.
Even Dr Amartya Sen (Nobel prize winner) acknowledged the work done by Late Dr Haq!
We in Pakistan need to teach and respect economics as a noble profession.
Unfortunately, many people do BA/MA in Economics and end up as school teachers. These graduates never care to write and publish manuscripts such as peer-reviewed research papers, monographs, pamphlets, seminars or colloquium technical papers, or books.
So to improve economic policy and decision-making for problem-solving we need to inculcate evidence-based thematic, & scientific (positivist), and ethnographic research methods within the academic discipline and domain of economics and development studies.
Thank you!
The elephant in the room is your army and the infinite amount of hatred towards India.
Azidi saheb, I can present a 4th scenario. Pakistan will disintegrate. Na rahega Baans na Bajegi Baansuri. Pakistan has to and will split into 4 parts this time. Baluchistan, Sindhudesh, Pashtunwali (Afghanistan) and Paxstan. As an Indian I thoroughly enjoyed this discussion.
Tum log to yeh bi kehte ho keh Ravanr ney Sita ki nahi mari thi

Then, it will be 4 different countries employing 4 different strategies against India. Afghans who liberated Kashmir and led 3/4 wars with India will have direct access to the boys of Hindustan. Then RAW's bid to cause terrorism in Pakistan will be multiplied ten times by China and other rivals of India to cause terrorism in India. Punjab will still border India, and the Punjabi majority in the army that had to be deployed to Balochistan, KPK and Sindh because the local security agencies are just too corrupt and inept, would now be available to Punjab alone, as would the nuclear arsenal and Khalistani insurgency. The federation of Pakistani provinces is already unstable, which if disintegrated will stabilize and become more lethal for India, at least the northern martial countries.
@@ibratnak Then so be it. At least there would be no more “Pakistan.”😀
Scarce resources are / were wasted on defense on the perceived threat from India for the last 76 years. Only Generals enriched themselves on that pretext
The military mainly protects itself by keeping the threat of India alive. The two nuclear-armed neighbors have been in conflict since the partition of South Asia in 1947. The militaries have fought four wars, with three of them over Kashmir valley. Even though Pakistan initiated these conflicts, it has told the public that it was only countering Indian aggression. In recent years, Pakistan has avoided a direct war, perhaps because it lost all previous ones. But it relies on militant groups based in Pakistan to keep tensions alive. This February offered a glimpse of such dynamics at play. In turn, the Pakistani Army gets the perfect excuse for its oversized burden on the country’s economy. Like a mafia protection racket, the military creates its own demand.
I admire the CA for his paper work, That's the way any serious meetings has to be conducted.
Pakistan military will have to voluntarily take backseat or it will be forced to because whole country will die otherwise. Military. cant run economy. Generals are public servants. Not masters
CA is also an ex Minister.
"Cantonment colonization". I learnt a new word today.
India learnt it's lesson of "foreign Central Bank governors" within two terms; not 15 years

This is the most logical, realistic, and sensible research of Pakistan I seen today..love youPIIA from India ❤
I have seen many interviews of Dr. Kaiser Bengali. He is more practical and knows the root cause of problem.
My guess is that the moderator is the wife of a general. These retired generals living off the state's largesse continue to inflict damage on the country well beyond their stint in the government. e.g. Asad Durrani. For Durrani the country's population can go to hell as long as he continue to cling to his fantasies of regional and global domination and being a participant in the Great Game. This is the core constituency that fuels the "ghairat brigade." As long as this section continues to have any traction whatsoever in the policy circles, Pak is doomed.
Not possible. Every retired general is outside Paxtan.
@@shrisheelsome live in cantonments inside their private castles guarded by 100's of guards while the poor starve outside of their boundary walls and cant even walk anywhere without being mugged. Pakistani people are beghairat, divided, confused and conquered. Should have run these people over 50 years ago. Ayub Khan shouldve been dragged out in the streets by the people and ripped apart by the people's bare hands, today Pakistan would be the sole power in this region if that was done.
Dr Mosama has got together an excellant team to discuss what ails Pak economy today and remedial measures. after listening to them, it is clear there is no lack of talent in Pakistan , knowledge and ability to analyse its current economic and political mess.
Let us have such lectures. Weldone. hurrah for organizers.
Very informative thought by the gusts, but who is listening in the government. One has to be educated more than FA & BA from Punjab university to understand.
Very informative. Thanks for uploading
The first speaker, (black coat) wala is talking BS bringing in Cricket and Anglo- Saxon Institutions.
Does Pakistan have an economy? I am asking a serious question.
It is an agricultural country that imports food to feed its people and valuable agricultural land is being taken away to create HDA homes and such. It’s population is exploding, 1/2 of its school going children don’t go to school and those who finish school or graduate from college don’t have real life skills to contribute to the world.
It exports $35B/year and imports 70$B/year. There is no sense of real education in the country and hence can never really have a functioning economy.
Help me clear any of my misunderstandings I may have.
The setting for this event is awesome!!
Very informative and realistic discussion. Happy to see openness and freedom of speech with critical analysis on key stakeholders.
Doctor Qaisr was extremely to the point and explained the clear situation of Pakistan well.
Excellent and very informative discussion...

In economic and societal discussions, "Anglo-Saxon" can refer to certain economic and political systems associated with countries like the United Kingdom and the United States. It's used to characterize capitalist and market-oriented economies with individual property rights and limited government intervention.
Rajput???? Which ethnicity r u from?
Sad to see people being misled by enemies of Pakistan. What PakIstan needs now more than ever is the final push in learning, teaching, following, implementing and spreading Islam, inside and outside of Pakistan.
Rogue state of Pakistan/napakistan GURBAT JAHALAT DEHSHATGARDI AUR TAMAM JURMO KA MARKAZ HAI.
Present condition of Pakistan is due to overuse of Islam.
So true. Everyone should live life like in madina. Travel on camels, eat dates. No gas required. No dollar required and jannat is guaranteed too that too with 72.
If thats what all pakistanis want tgen why even talk of economy. Be hapoy
Make your new kabba. A pakistani kabba. And start a new Haj and start collecting money. Shut down banks which are haram. Shut down tv, radio, newspapers. Stop cinema, dancing all haram. Your wedding should have no dance and music. learn from Taliban. Why womem leave houses and go out without burkha?
Learning, teaching and Islam in the same sentence is quite a stretch. Requires humongous efforts and more importantly a change in mindset.

An eye-opening discussion you guys had today, Mashallah. Sir Shabbar gave the best analysis. Realistic, visionary and based on factual arguments. The scenarios he gave in his presentation were quite realistic and scenario 3 being the most significant if implemented effectively can bring a radical shift in the economic structure of Pakistan. However, the overall situation may take years to change.
This conversation is 70 years too late. At this point the country is beyond repair. Pakistan has all the ingridients for a revolution, angst in youth, lack of opportunity, control by armed forces and poverty.
I want to be a part of ds discussion..how can i do it as i have da solution to economic problm.
Dr Bengali is absolutely spot on, on his assessment. Brutally accurate. No fairy tales.
@pakistan-institute, I wanted to ask if you would allow me to share just Shabbar Zaidi"s speech? Obviously I have to edit it, not distorting it though.
Do you guys test your audio system before the discussion. It’s so difficult to hear some of the experts, especially Mr. Bengali and the people asking questions.
Amazing stuff! Over 1 hour 43 minutes, but not a single word on digitalization, clean energy, sustainable business practices, lean/smart manufacturing or Technology! Truly scary scenario.
Mr. Shabbar and other allied gentlemen have enlightened the factualities of our economic crises, thus we would to stand for or against the all evil forces whether it belong to any institution.
Very thoughtful interaction.
Bharat also had similar situations in 1991.
But we revised our economic policies - Liberalisation came into the economy
I am thankful to Dr. Man Mohan Singh for that as a finance Minister (Not as a Prime minister)
We didnt had the blockage by any kind of religious laws, so we succeeded now.

Don't see this incomparison to 1991 India...Foundation and source of problem is different...
A military which runs country always get into hell situation in few decades...engaging in wars is the way country has been run from loots...when Military is weak, they can only loot inward and eat their own resources for survival...
Military leaders don't feel safe after retirement, this shows the state of country....
the show is cut out, i dont know why if they wanted to cut it out then there was no need to upload it .
Excellent conversation by Shabbar Zaidi sb. Hard facts narrated
Arre Paxstan exports a lot.... of pink salt. I heard even Footballs and Aam (Mango). Kachcha Baniyans are their specialty aur ab toh suna hai imported cotton se bante hain... Wow. Also some animal skin products the angrez call leather. Big exporter country Paxstan.
Hairat ki baat hai ki Pakistan mein is tarah ke program sunne vale log hai..she cut the, "Elephant in the room" part due the fear that the elephant may get angry..but Dr. Bangali made it eminently clear who the elephant is..
Brilient presentation of ecnomic malidies of country .
Very good, sensible and transparent show about the state of economy. Glad Pakistan still has some people who understand the real issues. The question is, will the establishment and government of Pakistan implement the recommendations because of their huge ego and false prestige. Not sure what the host was expecting when she said she did not expect the discussion to go this way. Wish she could have given her thoughts.
Will military, judges, bureaucrats and Parliamentarian let go their privileges and start paying their taxes as a first steps?
It was very nice debate and inovative too
Thank you for your positive attitude. One thing you have to tell your people is that India produced a large number of Scientists, Engineers, Diplomats, eminent doctors and famous and successful corporate heads which bring positive attitude, progress, development, breakthrough, growth, momentum, wealth etc., whereas Pakistan is in the bankruptcy of intellectual minds and is famous for producing top class terrorists which brings hatred, destruction, poverty, annihilation, carnage, extremism, massacre, murder slaughter etc. Children should be sent to schools and colleges to get scientific temper instead of extremists breeding centers where the maulavi teaches about fairytales, injustice to woman, dreaming about 72 virgin, hate for people of other cammunity, a flat earth, radicalism, vanity, sixth century morality etc. Remember, just because of one lunatic Usama Bin Laden who wanted to show the power of the religion, how many nations got destroyed and how many innocent people got perished.
Thank you very much for your very informative and very interesting program on
Economic Problems of Pakistan
We all have to think very seriously
How to live in Minimisation
We are extra spenders
We individually and collectively live beyond our means
We are not willing to change ourselves
Personally I have never made a Budget
Even if I make it
I do not work on it
Also whenever I go to the market to buy 2 items
I will buy 5 to 6 item's Always in debt
It's the same way collectively
Good and revealing program 😊
Bhavesh Bhai but how many Pakistanis will accept this and wt abt pakistani establishment even breathe it
Nothing to reveal , It's just how to re-live
Let us have to take necessary measures to balance expenditures in accordance with our earnings and adopt to austerity formula keeping in view the bad circumstances of the country which otherwise may suffer not only to single man but to whole, if the irregularities are not abandoned.
DR Bengali is far superior in his critical analysis. next is Zaidi & then come others. Good discussions & informative. Thanks. PK is doomed already. No way out AT ALL!
Very honest and educated debate!
I had seen parts of this program, today I saw the full length. Very plain truth. Will we accept the reality and change!
Amadan, guftan, barkhastan. All we do is talk. Talk is cheap; what is needed is action. If successive governments have failed to perform in 75 years, people should not take it lying down but act to protect their interests. Leaving it to inept and corrupt politicians is never enough. Nations are made by the people, not the politicians. We are all guilty ---- some more than others.
They were created. They never fought for independance

Hearing eminent economists like Dr. Bengali I am reminded of Sisyphus who was condemned by Zeus to carry a rock up the mountain for eternity...only for the rock to fall drow the mountain just as he is about to reach the top!! Only difference out here is that Pakistan has condemned 'itself' by its past policies (economical, social and political) and present egoistic doggedness to not learn from history!!
