I remember an interview Bobby did once, when he answered the question, it went like this, well, I created a character called Evel Knievel, and he kinda got away from me,
If he never crashed, there would be about 45 seconds of usable footage of his career. Fact: If he was good at what he did, we never would've heard of him. Without writing a book, bottom line is that he was a hero on Wide World of Sports on Saturday afternoons, and in the rest of his life he was an absolutely terrible human being, to both family and friends. He "never did drugs", but he was a raging alcoholic....alcohol is a DRUG. He was NOT in a coma for 29 days after Caesar's Palace, that was a fabricated lie. The X-1 test launches WEREN'T failures to cross the canyon, they were designed to test the launch ramp and for publicity. The guy was bouncing checks to Bob Truax during the building of the X-2's, and he was blowing money left and right, partying, INSTEAD OF paying Truax enough to get it right with the X-2's. He screwed over the town of Twin Falls for tons of money. There was no "wrong gearing" for the bike at Wembley that they couldn't get in time from NJ, he simply wasn't ready and blew the jump over the 13 buses. The first thing he said to Frank Gifford after he crashed at Wembley was "Frank, get that broad out of my room (at the hotel)". He was married to a great woman, Linda, and literally bragged about screwing every piece of ass he could get. In short: Robert Craig "Evel" Knievel was a lousy person, and if he was just another guy you wouldn't want him living on your block. And all of that is just a sampling of what he was as a human being.
That what made him who he was. Using a Sportster instead of a dirt bike. The other part was the conditions he jumped in. Little narrow tracks out of a stadium stands onto a ramp over the gap back onto a little narrow ramp and sometimes through a very narrow doorway after coming down. Unimaginable
