So after my Dean Winchester character study, I decided to do one for Sam. Now, this was a bit harder for me because I know much more about Dean. He's always been my favourite, and I know a lot of scenes and episodes about him.
Sam on the other hand, is a character I like, but not a lot. I wouldn't want to miss him, but Dean is just amazing. Sam is a bit boring. But making this character study has taught me more about him, and made me see him in a different way. It hasn't been easy for him either. He had a hard time with his dad, and with his life. He just wants to be normal. And I really feel for him. I hope he'll get the life he wants someday...
My favourite scene is the last one where he says: I know.. It just broke my heart. He feels so guilty towards Jess... :(
So I've tried uploading this video three times today. The first time I noticed there were some faults in the video. I uploaded it again when I realized it wasn't in HD. And now it finally is!!

I love Sam’s whole story arc. He’s such an underrated character. “Sam I boring” “Sam is too broken and obnoxious” - really? Seriously? He just gets screwed over and over again it’s not surprising the writers wrote him to be really broken. The guilt that he feels and the dissing from everyone when he screws up in the series. And look, Season 14, you’re not gonna get Dean for a while so buckle up. (I love Dean don’t get me wrong. Just find that Sam has been a weirdly hated character)
I think the hate Sam gets is the writer's fault for writing the story from Dean's pov. When Sam does something we see how Dean feels about it. When Dean does something it's how Dean feels. We should have more access to Sam's feelings. He's the protagonist after all.

I mean, you’re right, it’s really Sam’s story. Everything started because of him. Mostly it all kinda revolves around him. That moment with Yellow-eyes in the nursery sets the course of all of their lives. For the rest of their lives. Everything, EVERYTHING, that happens, it all revolves around him. What was done to him, and what comes of it.
But it’s mostly always Dean’s eyes we see through. And he doesn’t always see his little brother very clearly. At all.
That point of when Sam fucks up, we see it all from Dean’s POV, and when Dean fucks up, it’s all Dean’s POV, is so damned spot on, I can’t.
Hell, Dean wouldn’t even let Sam be mad at him when he made the deal all the way back in season two. It was all about how he couldn’t lose Sam. Not about how now, on top of everything else, Sam is gonna have to carry the guilt and grief that Dean couldn’t bear.
He NEVER admits that he willingly handed the demons the one weapon that Sam couldn’t possibly fight against. His big brother, and needing to save him. He hates on Sam so much for Ruby, without ever truly coming to terms with the fact that Sam only lets her in to try to save Dean. And that he only loses himself to her, because Dean left him alone and so utterly broken.
I love Dean. But he drives me bonkers like few characters. And now I know why. Thank you so much 😅
Then again, I’m not so sure it’s the writing. Sam is a very introspective character. Always has been. He holds a LOT in. Internalizes everything. More than Dean, in lots of ways, because he doesn’t wear the emotions he’s trying to repress on his sleeve. He actually represses them. Until he can’t. And mister no-chick-flick-moments Dean doesn’t chase him down and demand to talk shit out nearly as often as Sam does that for him.
I feel Sam is more interesting than Dean actually he has been through a LOT and his character is so filled

@@Z.h.S.B. I honestly relate to Sam more. I don't feel a person like Dean is realistic. Anyone that depressed, unhealthy and hates himself would have committed suicide. Sam's more grounded as a human. He's also depressed sometimes, but within reason. Or maybe that's just my optimistic side talking, but I feel Sam is a better character too.
I'm surprised to read in the comment section that some people (not here) think that “Sam is boring” “Sam is too broken and obnoxious”...I don't understand why. He's my favourite character in the whole show. He 's so sweet, and when he made mistakes, he always try to redeem himself. He's been through so many and he's still here fighting this guy is so strong and resilient he's a great role model. He was ready to sacrifice himself twice, in order to close the gates of hell and to stop the apocalypse. He's a hero to me.

And in return for all he's been through in universe and all the bashing by "fans" Sam got the ending he deserved. It was a good day to be a Sam girl. I will never stop loving this character.
I'm surprised he is hated in the fandom to begin with. They all made mistakes. Sam did too. He faced darkness within and out. He was willing to redeem his mistakes. He is great character.

I really hated that part where they made Dean tell Sam that it should've been him lying there dead and burning instead of Charlie. Did they ever explain that it was the Mark of Cain that made Dean say something so cruel to his brother? I hope so. I mean, I get being upset about Charlie, but that remark crossed a line I never thought Dean would. Absolutely hated it.
Yes !!! I hated Dean for a momment there ..that was the cruelest thing he's ever said.

I really think Jared Padalecki did a absolutely amazing and fantastic job playing our Sammy for so long, he nailed this role and i can't believe anyone would ever critisise the character of Sam or Jared's acting skills. Theres so much brilliant work that Jared did as an actor for this character, making Sam have a lively personality, but also having lots of foreshadowing and parts of his character a mystery, from his rage, sadness, to his kindness and funny, soft side. Jared made Sam such a lovable character to many of us and i'll be forever grateful for the 15 years of memories he gave me and the fandom.

You missed the part of Sam that lets him see good in supernatural creatures. Sure he's sometimes been tricked because of this, but at least he doesn't kill something just because it has fangs. Most hunters sometimes appear little better than serial killers.
Here is my character study on Sam :
Season 1 = Sam is Azazel’s human chew toy, got his powers from Azazel’s spilled blood on his mouth, eww
Season 2 = Sam died (cried aww) Dean make that deal with that demon
Season 3 = Sam tried to save Dean from the deal and hunting down Lilith at the same time.
Season 4 = Sam drinks demon blood (again eww, hate Ruby) and released Lucifer.
Season 5 = Sam defeated Lucifer but was trapped in the cage as well (again cried aww)
Season 6 = Sam returned from the cage lost his soul but Death was such a nice guy he puts back Sam’s soul
Season 7 = Castiel broke Sam’s wall (Cas you jerk) and struggling with his hallucinations
Season 8 = Sam did the Demon Trials almost killed him (best finale episode ever, cried buckets!)
Season 9 = Sam possessed by Gadreel to save his life (hate Gadreel) Dean got the Mark of Cain
Season 10 = Dean became a demon but Sam save Dean, then Sam released Amara when the Mark was removed
Season 11 = All about Amara and God and Dean almost affair with Amara (eh, Dean seriously?)
Season 12 = All about Mary and BMOL (hate them, happy they got rid of those pompous Brits)
Except for Season 11 and 12, Sam is the only character who was so messed up that they keep on writing another season to try to make Sam less messed up but then he turns out to be more messed up than he was previously and the whole story just got so messed up with all Sam’s mess. So, Sam is boring? Lol you must be joking.
Thank you so much for saying all this. Sam was screwed over before he was even born but he has always tried to do the right thing, have a life and do the best he can in a bad world. Season 8 finale was my favourite season ending and no doubt will remain my fav until the series finale which I hope will end like season 2 did with the brothers (and maybe Cass) doing what they used to do best or all 3 end up in Heaven and reunite with all their friends. Never thought I'd start to lose interest in this show but after the season 12 premiere it went down hill (had a few good episodes and moments) but it took the main story away from the brothers which is the shows foundation, which is also the problem with season 13. Sam has always been my favourite character from day one but at the end of the day Sam and Dean are like yin and yang, Scooby and Shaggy, Bonnie and Clyde, you can't have one without the other and they both are the driving forces behind the show that making them babysit Lucifers kid and helping him to be good makes it feel more like Jacks the focus with Sam and Dean becoming like Bobby when helping the boys, fresh face or not season 12 was meant to be more like the early seasons but it so wasn't.
CJMusicNZ exactly. Sam has been screwed over again and again even before he was born. Remember the deal Mary made with Azazel to save John, Azazel gets access into their home in ten years and here we are. What makes me upset is that there’s a lot of Sam in this story, his bad, his good, his worst, his pasts and a lot of the plot line revolves around Sam and people just ignore him or didn’t take him seriously because he’s not funny. And it’s just kinda sad that people didn’t see how deep Sam character is. How he just craves approval from John from Dean ever since he was a kid. How he continues to live trying to be a good person even when he makes mistakes and paid for it over and over. How he adore and loves Dean always the little brother that Dean needs him to be (even though he’s a grown man). How he always want the normal life but couldn’t have it because by doing so meaning he would lose Dean. Just how can anyone ignore a person who have that much conflict and pain inside like Sam and said he’s not interesting like he asked everything that had happened in his life.

I really like Sam but after season 8 his character was overlooked and it was boring because they kind of were trying to show him as a broken guy
@@sagharkhalili2959Are we talking about the same character? Overlooked? Isn't he one of the main stars of the show? And he WAS broken. He has been screwed over and over and over again, what did you expect?
This was nice, but I think it was a little too short for a "Character Study" about Sam.
He is such a complex deep character which you have to look into it to really understand him and apreciate him. He is more interesting than people think.
You can try a rewatch but paying atention to Sam and seeing it from his perspective, what he say, how he act, the situations he suffered and how he faced them, and his evolution as character from a hopfull to broken character who screwed it up a lot but always tried redeem himself, always walking foward and carrying the weight of his past mistakes until today.
One of the best ways to read his character is not through words, is paying atention to his body movments, facial expressions and voice. If you can see that, you don't need words to understand Sam, Jared does a really good Job with his body to express how Sam is actully feeling.
That’s what I always say.
Sam is one of those characters that you have to watch their eyes. The eyes give everything away, even when they’ve managed to bury everything else.

Sam has evolved so much even though he can't ever really put behind everything that's happened to him he is moving forward and he is done trying to be normal he's a hunter and a leader and he has a family that he loves and will do anything for. After about 14 seasons, almost 300 episodes Sam Winchester is not the same character.

Eleanor Winter well, my theory is Sam probably thought Dean was in heaven if he asked demons if he was in hell, then he probably wouldn't have wanted him back on earth if he thought he was having a much better life there
sam was lost when all of the lavaithin thing was over
I don't think he wanted to stop looking but he got no where to look and had lost his brother that's when he met that girl (I don't remember her name now lol) but anyway.. at that point sam stopped because he was lost and he understood that no matter what they do they'll never save the world and everytime they attempt to do so they end up killing people around them

They do. My poor baby I believe he did look for Dean but he just couldn’t anymore and it was a normal life or he would of killed himself.
I also believe if he didn’t hit Roite he would of driven off a cliff that night. That’s what I think would of happened
+Eleanor Winter, I don't think Sam just forgot about Dean, because we all know that Sam has a very large guilt complex. When somebody you love dies, some people go into a kind of shock. They don't know what to do, how to live, or where to go with their life. As we saw in Season 4, when Dean died, Sam became a whole different person. He wanted to die. He literally, honestly, wanted to kill himself. But he didn't because Ruby was there, and she offered him revenge. Sam figured he would die doing what he did, hence the kamikaze attack he was going to do before Ruby stopped him.
We've seen many, many instances where Sam is suicidal, and it breaks my heart. I can't even count on one hand how many times there's been. However, my opinion is that when Dean was in Purgatory, things changed. You want to know why? Sam had 0 fucking (excuse my profanity) clue where Dean was. He could have been anywhere in the universe, and Sam had no starting points. What could he do? What stones could he turn over? There were none, because there was no evidence in where Dean went.
So his body created a fantasy for himself. It's called denial. It's called shock. His body was protecting him, and so he lived a normal life so that he didn't have to deal with the reality that his brother was truly gone. Sam, as he has stated more than once, couldn't live without his brother. That's why I believe what I believe. I personally think that if it hadn't been for Amelia, Sam wouldn't be here.
Not many people understand the magnitude of what Sam has gone through, and that's fine. Not many people can pick out the signs unless you've experienced half of them yourself. He's a very difficult character, and although I condescend for him, his character was written beautifully.

I love Sam. There are a lot of great aspects of his character that are missing. He is this kind caring character that is trying to save everybody and everything. He's a badass with a lot of compassion. This seems to be mainly focused on his screw ups. Is there is a particular reason for that?

He really, really is. And what’s worse, is Sam is already so damned hard on himself. He’s already always twisting the knife, all on his own. And Dean always knows EXACTLY where to jab the next one in.
Coming back and watching this again makes me realize how much I love Sam. Especially the first part. I really hope you'll make more of him soon!

It will always break my heart that he thinks there's something wrong with him. He may not be "normal" but that's bc he's special, he's not average. He is the best. My favorite fictional character of all time. I warrior and a survivor. An inspiration to us all. If he could carry on after all he's been through we certainly can.

Watching this video you can see how sad and tragic his life has been. Even at the end when Dean dies you can see Sam never gotten past losing his brother.

Instead of "feeling guilty", you should have written; "Dean trapping him psychologically", and put clips of the fight between them over Dean selling his soul, and making him give promises to continue this hunter life. In addition, to always guilt-tripping him instead of letting him decide over his own life
