IRAN: A Side Of The Country The Media Won't Show You - Arrival in Tehran

  • In this first introduction episode, I arrive in Tehran and see some of the sights there, showing the stereotyped view of the former US embassy (now the “Den of Espionage Museum”), the Azadi Tower, and the history of the Golestan Palace, before moving to the more modern Tehran with the Milad Tower and Tabiat (Nature) Bridge.
This is just the start, there’ll be a lot more coming from one of the most fascinating countries I’ve experienced.

    PATHS LESS TRAVELED
In the late summer of 2022 I embarked on an epic road trip around Iran, during a time of unrest as protests escalated across the country.
Covering around 6200km over 24 days, I was able to see this incredible country in a way that many are not fortunate enough to see, and to record my experiences in a way that has not been done before.
Safety concerns meant that I had to limit my filming on occasion, and stay well away from any signs of the troubles going on.
However, what I did see was an incredible insight. Some of the most wonderful and welcoming people, incredible history and culture, and mind blowing food.
Paths Less Traveled - Iran is my story of my experiences, put in an in-depth series of Iran travel vlogs.

I have been in Iran for the past 2 months. Visited the entire this amazing country and people. Honestly, I have never seen a protest since I don't go out at night. However, twice I heard a shooting at night. I would love to stay and witness what will happen, but I must leave by next week. It is becoming more exciting. Wishing a better future for the youths of Iran. They deserve it!

Wow 2 months is a long stay, surely that long can't be just tourism? As you say it's an amazing country with great people, and that's what I want to show in my videos. I also pretty much stayed in after dark to avoid any possible trouble, I'm a tourist, not a journalist!

@@mokshanranasinghe5360 it is very safe! People live a normal life in all the places except some Kurdish cities and perhaps in some Baluch cities. All I can say is I have been traveling and have not witnessed anything during the day. I am avoiding Kurdistan since there are cities with Marshall laws. However I am going to Kermanshah tomorrow. Touristy places are all safe as of now. Bottom line if you are not political and avoid protests you have nothing to worry about. I feel much more unsafe in many places in the US than here. No guns!

Dear Chris, I hope you enjoy visiting Iran. In fact, if you had traveled two months earlier to Iran, you wouldn't have faced any protests and unrest here. I live in Urmia and here is one the most beautiful cities located in the northwestern part of Iran and is famous for lake Urmia which is, unfortunately, going to be dried. But we have incredible nature with so many ancient structures back to the B.C period of time, such as saint Mariam church and Jame's mosque. I will be thrilled to come here and visit everywhere.

I got very happy to hear that you enjoyed yourself in my country in spite of some unpleasantness that happened to you. We Iranians/Persians love tourists and we just love to communicate with our guests during their visit. Certainly you have seen us and have talked to the people. Unfortunately, the world doesn't know almost anything about us. Hopefully you and many other tourists visiting Iran little by little can get the word out about the truth of Iran. Thank you for sharing. God bless you.

@@ChrisKermis Hey, Thanks for the reply, and yea that's completely reasonable, and anyway a good idea cause we get to see real life in certain countries which are often reported on negatively, not the negative politics. Though I think in this case the difference is that this is not like the West against whatever country, this is the people themselves who want change for their own country, but I do think the West needs to hear more about whats going on there. And yea I hope so too, they are truly courageous and inspiring, just really sad when you see teenage girls among others being killed just for protesting.

While we prefer peace and not having to run to bomb shelters we also know how to defend ourselves. The sad thing is that innocents also end up getting killed and that is why war and hate is so bad for us all. There are bettrt ways to solve disputes sadly all the hate and terror over the years have only strengthened the right wingers in Israel. The Iranian people have spoken loud and clear they support the sanctions even though it also hurts them, they are willing if it helps topple the regime. I have heard this time and time again. They are brave. They are proud, they are sick and tired of living under this terrible evil regime which kills girls for nothing but protesting for freedom such as Sarena Esmailzade and Nika Shakarimi. Iranians have explained to me they often r-pe these girls too because they are not allowed to kill virgins. The Mullas are finished and Iranians are getting their freedom. It's impossible for me to say regarding danger. It seemed to me that the biggest danger was being in the wrong place at the wrong time, my biggest worry being near a protest that was going on and getting accused of inciting it. If your wife only has a UK passport then she would need to have a guide from an approved company at all times and submit where she will be every day in order to get the visa.

Although most feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, there’s been a fair amount of negativity, political statement and on occasion even hate speech due to the timing of my visit to Iran. Please allow me to acknowledge that and give some more details the timing of my trip, my time there and why I’m making these videos.
Firstly, my timing. I arrived in the early morning of 19 September and left on 13 October.
As a British passport holder the visa alone took around 2 months, so the trip was a long time in the making. On my second day there in Tehran (as I was stuck in my hotel with a bad case of food poisoning which I picked up in Istanbul), I heard about the situation and the protests starting.
When leaving Tehran to begin the trip, I had a lot of thoughts about leaving Iran and giving up on it entirely. But at the same time, nobody I spoke with was concerned or thought the protests would last long. I decided to continue and really saw few signs of protests or trouble throughout the majority of my trip. At the same time I was very careful to avoid any possibility of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
As I continued back north from the Persian Gulf I found I had to be more careful. I’m sure you will understand that I did not want to risk being in the wrong place at the wrong time and getting in big trouble for it. When I reached the Kurdish region (again this was long planned before anyone knew this situation would unfold), things were more tense and I would happily have left the country a week earlier than I did.
My intention for this channel and these videos has never been political or journalistic. It’s a difficult time for Iran, and I will not detract from that in any way.
I will not show what is going on there in these times, nor will I discuss it or give opinions on it other than how it affected my time there. That does not mean I’m saying the situation isn’t happening. But there are plenty of places online I’m sure where that kind of content and discussion exists. This is not it.
But I do think there is value in showing the rest of the world Iran beyond the news (both now and before the current situation). It gives context to those who don’t know the country - who only hear what the media and news want to say about the current situation. It shows them that Iran is a county worth caring about. It makes Iran more relatable. Normal life, incredible food, culture and people. Not just the protests.
So I really hope you understand that I am not detracting from the tough times of the Iranian people in the current situation.
My love to you all ❤
