Shadow Mario gave me creepy vibes I was pretty scared how fast and jumpy he was making those noises when I played it as a kid. Sure loved having that anti Mario framing him. Wish he could return someday. Glad he’s a cameo in Ultimate.
Here's a fun detail you may have missed all these years: Bowser Jr's Hair is supposed to resemble a paintbrush.
I'm glad Nintendo has brought the brush back to his character with Bowser's Fury and Nintendo World, and I hope he keeps it so we can maybe see Shadow Mario again.
Bowser Jr. mention he got his magic paintbrush from a mysterious man in a white coat which he refers to Professor E. Gadd as you can tell the logo from the magic paintbrush!

Imagine if Bowser Jr. dons the Shadow Mario disguise in the next 3D Mario game.
Something interesting to note here; the Magic Paintbrush Bowser Jr. uses in Bowser’s Fury no longer has the Gadd Science, Inc. logo, instead bearing his own logo. This implies that it’s a new Magic Paintbrush recreated for Bowser Jr.
We can rule out Il Piantissimo having gotten a hold of the original, since aside from him not appearing again, Bowser Jr. is still using the Gadd Science model in multiple spin-offs prior to Bowser’s Fury.
Unless Professor E. Gadd has finally reclaimed the original Magic Paintbrush, it’s still out there somewhere; meaning there’s a slight possibility of Shadow Mario returning as someone else in disguise (emphasis on slight however...😅)!

Shadow Mario's soulless red eyes are just peak and unsettling.
While it's always cool to see Shadow Mario reappear, as rare as it is, I don't think he needs to make a full blown comeback in any new games, considering Bowser Jr. has already gone on to become a staple character in the Mario franchise. It'd be cool for him to be brought back as a way to introduce Bowser Jr. in the movies, though!
Also, I kept waiting until the fact that E. Gadd created the paintbrush would be brought up. Really makes you wonder if they planned to have him as some sort of influence in many Mario adventures going forward in the early 2000s, but it didn't pan out for one reason or another...

6:32 are we not going to mention that in the behind the scenes of this game like literally in game, Bowser Jr can basically just cheat his way into the game as shadow mario even though he was never picked in the first place
I like to think Shadow Mario is a substance created from Bowser Jr’s paintbrush, meaning he lives in the paintbrush. So I would say you don’t need Bowser Jr. for him. I could see Bowser Jr. throwing his paintbrush and Shadow Mario coming out of it and catching the paintbrush.
I hope Shadow Mario does appear in the movie or is at least referenced. He is a unique character
I like the idea that Piantissimo is the Cosmic Mario in Mario Galaxy, he’s using the brush and he’s using it for his own interest. It’s goofy but it checks all the boxes

Since Shadow Mario is a disguise for Bowser Jr, he’s technically not missing, nor is he forgotten thanks to Smash Bros. Also I don’t think the Mario series needs more pointless characters to fill up a roster for Mario Sports or Mario Kart. Isn’t that right Pink Gold Peach?

Wish Shadow Mario got to return someday. He could be made into his own character created from attempting to turn a fusion of a Fury Shadow and a Rift Copy into its own being with a normal Gaddbrush for his base. But he winds up being pretty much being a magic-based Metal Sonic, except for Mario instead of Sonic. With the new Shadow Mario trying to not only rival Mario, but also surpass him too.

Upon my first impressions of him, 12-year-old me thought that Shadow Mario was just one of a series of evil clones of Mario characters. I pictured a Shadow Yoshi, Shadow Luigi, and even a Shadow Peach to accompany him. In retrospect? I'm kinda glad he just ended up being an alter ego to Bowser Jr..
At one point, I entertained the idea that Il Piantissimo became the "new" Shadow Mario in Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour. As time went on, that notion carried less weight, and when I saw Shadow Mario return in Smash 4, that bizarre theory evaporated.
I like that you mentioned Metal Mario. Your conclusions on how he became prominent in the 2010s does give a bit of credence to why Shadow Mario has yet to return. Incidentally, I am a _much_ bigger fan of Metal Mario and and love seeing him used so much these days.
Who knows what the future holds for Shadow Mario? If he comes back, I'd welcome that.

I must point out that the clone in 3D land is not cosmic, because In 3D land, bowser does not have the power of the stars at his disposal.
I always thought the handkerchief around Bowser Jr.’s neck was what transformed him into Shadow Mario
1:44 It always bothered me that everyone mistakes Shadow Mario for Mario even though Shadow Mario is clearly completely blue while Mario is not. It’s like how people in Sonic Adventure 2 mistake Shadow for Sonic even though they clearly don’t look alike because of their different colors.
It’s a really stupid trope that they use to create a narrative but it makes every other character color blind and stupid.

Easy answer. Shadow Mario requires transparent rendering, while Metal Mario does not.
I don't really see Shadow Mario fitting in any future mainline Mario games, but I could see him briefly being used in the plot of a future Mario RPG. Although something like this has already been done in the Mario RPGs, with the Duplighost enemies in the first 2 Paper Mario games.

Thing is Shadow Mario isn't really his own character. He was never meant to be his own character which is why hes never returned. He was always meant to be Bowser Jr in disguise.

Isn't the point of this character that he pretended to give Mario a clone rival, but that JR was actually his true identity? If you're going to give Mario a clone rival, you should create a new one or metal mario separate transform from him.

I wish we got Shadow Mario on Mario Kart instead of Metal Mario.
What a lazy idea. It was Bowser Jr. In disguise.
So, I have an idea for what they could do with Shadow Mario. Nothing plot-wise, just an artstyle they could go for.
To make Shadow Mario mysterious and stand out, they could animate him in a similar style to the Spider Verse movies, maybe give him a bit of similarities to the Spot from Across the Spider-Verse. I mean, the animation style he had when the Spot was made more of a threat halfway into the movie. I mean, wouldn't it look cool?

Only a minutes in (aka just the intro) but I would assume, at least after the rerelease of 3D World that Shadow Mario is TECHNICALLY Fury Bowser Jr, except he has control of himself unlike his father when he gets paint all over himself.

Joking aside, I always thought of Cosmic Mario, the Cosmic Clones, and other variants being the successors to Shadow Mario, just fitting the themes of space and whatnot. Though I would definitely not mind Jr. bringing back the paint brush in the future for some of his schemes other than making his dad really mad. I feel like he'd be able to make a sandbox level or Paper Mario chapter very puzzle-focused with it!
Also, shout-out to the manager of Hotel Delfino for actually being the only Pianta who recognizes Shadow Mario IS OBVIOUSLY NOT Mario!

Krystal from StarFox is certainly M.I.A to some extent. Despite the assist trophy from Smash, her last appearance is in Command I think. Even on the Orbital Assault stage in Smash for Wii U, there's only 3 Arwings, not the usual 4. An argument could be made that it's either Fox or Falco in the stage but still 🤔 really hoping for Nintendo to give us some StarFox content soon 🤞😮💨

I guess they forgot about Shadoo in the Super Paper Mario Flopside pit of 100 trials.
That's also considered Shadow Mario but included Shadow Peach Luigi and Bowser.
