- The Manipur issue has been boiling since a long time and we have heard endless news about the protests and violence. Till now the conflict seems to be unsettled, even after the intervention of State Government and Central Government and deployment of various armed forces. However, today in this video we will cover the complete history of Manipur. Try and understand the origins of the 3 prominent tribes from Manipur, the kukis, nagas and meiteis. And mainly try and answer one of the most important question that has been surfacing, who actually are the original manipuris??

My sisters and aunts were Hindus but got married to Christian men later on we learnt that they were being forced to convert saying their husband families will not be allowed inside the church if their hindu daughter in law doesn't convert to christianity

Because after 10 people choose different streams so they don't get chance to study about it. 1:17 Correction: Meiteis were living in present Manipur way before 33AD. Since time immemorial, they were living at hills just like the kabuis, tangkhuls and several other old tribes. The Valley region a.k.a. imphal valley was earlier water bodies or lakes. With time passes by, water bodies dried up and the meiteis came down and reside in valley. The rise of meitei kingdom in valley started in 33 AD.
So, the tribes and the meiteis have been living in the hills atleast 2000-3000 BC

As a regular visitor to Manipur here are some points I noticed in addition to the video:
1) Kuki and Naga used to consume Beef, Pork other items and as a result the Hindu Temples never allowed them to worship or enter it, as a result they chose Christianity because they felt included with a sense of unity.
2) Kuki and Naga(both fought each other and still don't gel well).
3) Though, The Valley is around 15% of the state area, but it's very developed as compared to the Hills, the hills don't even have hospitals or electricity or any development, I would face a lot of issues even to find basic items there, so, the Valley has its benefits.
4) I think just like how people Vidarbha, Marathwada, Mithila, Purvanchal, etc feel a sense of having their own state, I think thats exactly what Meitei and Kuki-Zom people feel these days, majorly the latter group.
I think if the Indian media did its part of honest journalism instead of hiding the the Manipur violence for 76 days, I think the war wouldn't have escalated.
I think we as Indians failed the state of Manipur.
Kuki or Metei or Naga, who cares? They're humans and our media did a huge disservice to them by avoiding their plea over a Pakistani women like Seema, or the airing of France riots instead of Manipur.

Being a Meetei, we know more about our root and history. There were 7 clans kingdom in Manipur in BC, later all these kingdoms merged into a single kingdom in 33 AD under the great empiror NONGDA LAIREN PAKHANGBA. Meetei king had wrtten royal chronicle which have written daily event of Meitrabak since BC until Britsh period , king Churachand . Manipur had different names in different period in history as Kangliepak, Meeteileipak, Meitrabak, Manipur. Kangleipak and Meitrabak means land of Meetei. After the change of name of the land as Manipur, Meetei are also known as Manipuris.However, Meetei king allow different tribe to live in Meitrabak. But it is very clear that Very few kukis were allow to settle in Meitrabak during British era only. After merger of Manipur to India , with the changes in land reform and caste system , it ruins completely to Meitei/ Manipuris.
As Meitei had witness several horror situation in history and learnt lesson from those , Meitei will never give up whatever cause to protect their motherland Manipur.
Meitei may sacrific their life , but no compromisec to their Motherland.

The Meiteis and Nagas are the only two indigenous communities known to have lived in Manipur since ages. Meitei language has been in existence since 2000 years back till present times.The evolution of the Meitei nation was started with the accession of king Pakhangba in 33 CE/ AD. The first Salai (tribe) into the Meitei fold was Khaba. Till the beginning of the Christian era, the Khaba Kings were ruling at Kangla.
it was due to meiteis that the british could not go beyond regions of manipur as it was well defended by meitei rulers.
there were 33 tribes who were given the ST status post merger of manipur with India by 1949.
meitei being one such tribes, were not given ST status, as it was given to kuki and naga tribes. this was the main problem for meiteis.
before the merger agreement between the manipur and the Union of India in 1949,
the British had designated the Meiteis as a 'tribe amongst tribes'.
hence the meiteis say that they are essentially demanding the restoration of their tribal status that they had under the British rule.
The Kukis constitute one of several hill tribes within India, Bangladesh, and Myanmar.
The kuki people have been settling into manipur since 18th , 19th centuries from the mizo and chin hills., and they have arrived in waves, according to the National Socialist Council of Nagaland.
Christian missionaries entered Manipur in the late 19th century but did not yet make inroads into the tribal areas. The victory of the British in Anglo-Kuki War of 1917-1919 opened up their mind of the Kukis to Christianity followed by British. This led them to rapidly convert to Christianity.
the kukis fought the british, as they were not christians at that time, around 1917.
had the kukis been christians by that time, this anglo kuki war would not have happened.
both meiteis and kukis are part of the INA under Netaji, which fought the british army.
and, like how kukis can be proud of anglo kuki war, meiteis bravely fought anglo manipur war during 1891.

One word is enough for describe kuki.. KUKI means kuli Bengali word used by British Bengali used for transportation, cleaning, slave... British brought 1843 from Myanmar.... Kuki are not tribal they are nomedic community..inside kuki so many communities together make kuki community.... Sometime they can't communicate each other becouse different languages.

Conflicts and clashes will always be there among human beings as in the case of animals and nature.The present dispensation of the state and the center has done nothing to stop the situation,the wound is too deep to heal.I would not blame any of the two communities but hope and pray that good sense prevails.

I agree that kukis were brought in by the Manipuri kings from Myanmar. Because the meities kingdom were facing threat from the nagas who would destroy,kill n raid the neighbouring villages. These kukis have been residing before the integration of India as well as before independence. Therefore, they r rightfully citizens of Manipur just as the nagas, meities, tamgkhul etc. In state like nagaland, the nagas accept people ( who r not nagas) who were residing in nagaland before independence as citizens of nagaland.

Manipur History
During the Seven Years Devastation (1819-1826) in Manipur, about 5 lakh Meiteis were killed and 3 lakh were taken as captives. Less than 5000 Burmese soldiers took part in the Manipur campaign.
According to Maibam Chanu, when the Burmese left Imphal, the population of the kingdom was 2016 souls. However, there are other estimates that the number was higher, about 8000 souls. Majority of them were women. Meitei men fled to Cachar along with the king, leaving behind Meitei women in the kingdom.
During the seven years, Burmese soldiers took Meitei women as wives. An instance where a Meitei prince took the help of a Meitei women to kill her Burmese husband is a testimony to the claim. In fact, every Burmese soldiers took Meitei woman as wives.
Records suggests that the Burmese left huge bloodline in a Meitei society. A scholar who carried out a scientific study to prove the hypothetical question of Burmese bloodline was threatened and asked to abort research in 2010.
According to rough estimates, close to 30-35% of Meitei population are believed to have Burmese blood. The Mangang clan was almost wiped out at one point of time. When the Burmese left, children born from Meitei mothers were slowly assimilated to Meitei society.
There were debates whether such children are to be accepted to Meitei society or not. However, the demand to replenish the loss compels them to accepted them in the society.
Even today, historians have repeatedly avoided such studies as it can have a negative consequences in the unity of the Meiteis. A fair genome/DNA test is the only option to ascertain if a Meitei belong to one of Salai Taret or possesses Burmese heritage.

There are two types of manipuri
Bishnupriya and meitei.But most people don't know about Bishnupriya manipuri as there are a few of us only because meitei did the same thing to us in the past but nobody speak about it. It makes me sad that our culture and everything were taken from us.
Please do some research on the history of Bishnupriya manipuri.

At the same time we Assamese indigenous people like Nath, Kalita, Brahmin, Ahom etc don't enjoy ethanic rights because we are not ST. Very fault line lies here and need to be changed.
But Ahom use OBC category. And about Nath, Kalita, Brahmin they are upper caste so obviously they won't get any reservation.

The map depiccting the kingdom of Ahom is completely wrong. The Naga hills was never a part of the Ahom kingdom. The only reason Nagaland became a part of Assam was due to administrative ease by the Britishers. Till the end of 18th century, the majority of the Nagas didnt even know what an Indian looked like. Only few tribes like the Konyaks and Aos who had borders with Assam had some trade/other relations with the Ahoms but they too were never subjugated or ruled by the Ahoms.

The origin of Kuki/Chins is shrouded in mystery though it is largely believed they migrated to present Myanmar, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura sometime in the 15th century CE from China.

Meiti Hindus & Kuki Christian should jointly form an economic zone of entire land for development purposes instead of disputes over it .

10% is the exact meitei land. British seperated kuki land because they know they are fierceful worior. Those kuki land inside Manipur are rule from Imphal only. Its never been meitei land, and there never been meitei inhabitants before.
It's true Meiti live in 10% land area . Also true is that this 10% land holds 90% of the wealth & infrastructure of Manipur while the 90% land is unusable & account for 10% of wealth. The drug cartels live in the wealthy Meiti areas . Whatever some amicable settlement should be worked out between Meiti & Kuki instead of crooked blame games & atrocities.
