Holy shit even Yahtzee loved Undertale?!
Fuck, now I do have to go play it.
Here's a quick word of advice:
Play the game without convening your experience with ANYONE who has already played it. Trust me, people who have beaten Undertale are all too happy to ruin it with tips and spoilers, and it's best played as blind as possible. Even Yahtzee refused to do a full review because he thinks saying anything about the game's content will be an unnecessary spoiler. Keep playing, and ignore anyone who's already played it until the game has nothing more to offer you.

+Zapsie An addendum to that is as well as going into it blind in a content/spoiler sense, you should also try to lose any preconceptions you get from people who either overly hate it or love it and label it "pretentious hipster indie trash" or "Dah best game evar!!". (Not saying the game's absolutely perfect, but a lot of people seem to throw a lot of hate at it for personal/preferential reasons and what it's associated with rather than take it on it's own merit.)
+DastardlyGaming Technically speaking, it's not based on Earthbound. However, Earthbound is a very big inspiration for it, and if you like Earthbound, there is a very big chance you'll like Undertale.
Personally, Mother 3 was the best RPG of all time (in my personal opinion) before Undertale came along and wrecked it (in my personal opinion, wanna get that out there as much as possible so insane people don't take this the wrong way and I end up with unnecessary hate mail again).
Totalbiscuit, Jim Sterling, AND Yahtzee, my 3 favorite critics, gave my new favorite game their GOTY award. Man, my confirmation bias is kicking into overdrive right now.

What's funny is that this was my first exposure to Undertale. I literally had no other context than "Yahtzee put it at #1 for his Top 5 Games of 2015.”

Tbf not knowing any context is the best way to experience Undertale. I own it but don't intend of playing it because the magic is lost as I know too much to fully enjoy it.
Somehow ... for every Undertale fan mentioning the game somewhere out of context I see about 2489 comments telling me how obnoxious the fanbase apparently is.
So yeah, Undertale fanbase haters are worse than the Undertale fanbase.

I kinda feel the same every time someone mentions Tumblr as some kind of boogeyman dragging everything down too. I use it and I just find nice art and friendly people; imagine that, its a social platform you tailor to your interests where you can block or follow whoever you want. Finally started playing Undertale. An hour in and i've already went "awww," almost cried, and laughed my ass off.

+Vincenzo Paollo Grieco He's criticized popular games before. He just didn't find anything bad with the game. Honestly, I can't think of anything either, other than "graphics" but that would be a massively stupid thing to point out for a game like that one.
It's got atmosphere, varied gameplay, humour, actual emotion and a reasonable amount of character development. It's got interesting characters and different KINDS of humour (stupid humour, puns, silly characters, etc) It does a whole lot right and very little notably wrong... so it's hard for yahtzee to make one of his usual reviews.

KuroroSama42 For me it does not have a good replay value, and i think that since that something you only see if you obessive compusive play the game, so i think he did not pay atention to that if he did he say something to the lines of "i would not want to replay the game just for the sake of the characters saying "heve you see this before?" or for Sans make me go back three times so that he give me a key to a room where the fan base can jizz in the pants for theorys about him", and how annoying it is to begin the genocide run, i know for both the things i said a "the game was not desing for replay value or for the genocide run" can be used as a reason, but still is for these resons i give Undertale a 8,5 out 10

For those who are on the fence about playing Undertale, mainly because of the fanbase unfortunately turning into FNAF's kind of fanbase, don't let these types of things deter you from trying something interesting, as Undertale is this popular because of the charm it has, and several of the things Yahtzee mentioned above. Go ahead and try it out, and if someone judges you for playing it merely because of the fanbase, then shame on them.
+1odie2 Really I find judging a game based on those type of fans to be unfair. In reality these annoying fans are just a vocal minority, but they have the loudest voice and since you hardly hear from the people who are separate from this vocal minority, people tend to assume that all of the fan base consists of this vocal minority. This seems to be the case with EVERY fandom, be they game or movie or TV etc. etc.
my one gripe with undertale is the same as Jared's: that it was spoiled for me by the people who already played it. I wish i could have gone in blind, i probably would have loved it more
I'm lucky in that I had no friends to spoil it for me, and I only heard of the game when it became hugely popular, and as a result I recoiled from it, because I react negatively to things that are overly hyped. So by the time I finally _did_ look into it, it was about a year later, and nobody was talking about it enough anymore to risk spoilers, so I got a totally blind play of it, and it was glorious.
I sort of screwed the pooch and spoiled it for myself by watching a play through. I realized my mistake too late. :(
I actually managed to go in blind. Somehow. I'm really bad at keeping spoilers away from myself since I actually look them.up.

What's wrong with GameStop?
+General Tullius My experience with GameStop was as follows:
- Hype loses its novelty. The same games are released over and over and the same people you see come into your store week in and week out keep buying in. The marketing is relentless and you only see it for what it is once you've been forcibly exposed to it repetitively; psychotically-manipulative. The same thing over and over again in every title, even if its not.
- The droll repetition of the popular titles makes the relatively few unique ones vanish in a cloud of guilt-by-association. You stop singling out the better ones in your overall view because in the end it's all the same nonsense. They want you to want to keep up with it all, even though doing so is financially impossible.
- I worked five midnight openings for Madden, six midnight openings for Halo, five Christmases and five black Fridays in a busy shopping mall store where the whole mall could be dead and we would still be busier than a goddamned theme park. I noticed two things: 1) Patterns in people's gaming routines, and 2) buying habits that creepily and sadly match the intended effect of mass-marketing. Example: it takes people an average of two weeks to beat their games - one week to come and buy new games, one week where we're dead on a Saturday wondering what the hell is going on, and the next week we get slammed with trade-ins. When Madden time rolls around, people trade in more and more valuable titles for what is essentially "new players, shinier helmets and also one gameplay tweak". You see these games people trade in, some of which are really good, for shit money in return and wonder what the sudden sports game connosiuer will have left after he trades in Madden, WHICH THEY ALMOST ALWAYS DO, USUALLY WITHIN A MONTH OR TWO. So they're either bored quickly by it or my customers were very much the "played it, done with it" variety. Also, sports games are year based so, like cars, they go down in value faster. Players looking to save some money are falling for the corporate trade-in value structure without realizing they're spending money and sacrificing good games on what is essentiually a rental.
- A kid punched his grandma in the face because he was being a spoiled brat. Banned from the store
- A nine year old kid tried to buy GTA: Vice City. I carded him for his driver's license, much to his protest. Threatens to get his dad. I gleefully oblige. He leaves. Returns with [SPECTACULARLY INEBRIATED] dad. After he is finished screaming incoherently at my face and asking what my [bad word] problem is, I read the ESRB label to the dad. Kid gets dragged out of the store by his ear. My boss is now in a good mood. We finally get to go home, which is good, because at this point it feels like it's been 9:25 for like five hours already.
- Lady asked me if we took passport photos. I think she was Ukranian. I sent her to Kay Jewelers.
- When one annoying ad campaign for an annoyingly popular shitty franchise vanishes, a similar one from a similarly shitty but puzzlingly popular franchise emerges in its place. Usually, it appears between the time you just got finished peddling the previous game in the franchise and the time some other franchise occupies the signage and GameStop TV. You come into work having completely forgotten about [some bullshit] and suddenly its all "THE RETURN OF THIS BULLSHIT IV" and you're all "Jesus fucking christ not This Bullshit again". From the ground floor of the one tech industry humanity is perpetually going bonkers over more than all the others, video game marketing is like a goddamned horror movie - Store signs and poster ads for game franchises are like those monsters in horror movies that not only just don't die, but keep coming back. Just when you almost forgot about them and thought they were long gone, BAM; the sign for the next one appears, like if Groundhog Day and Texas Chainsaw Massacre were the same goddamned movie. They're back in an even shittier sequel that will haunt your waking life and also your recurring nightmares forever, again, a fourth time, not counting expansion packs, which aren't canon anymore so they're gonna do new expansion backs, probably. AND EVERYONE WILL ASK ABOUT IT, AND YOU CAN'T TELL THEM IT'S GROUNDHOG DAY, BECAUSE THEN you're THE CRAZY ONE.
- CHRONOS - The Stingy Skynet. Lots of retailers use it, it's an automated system that lives in the GameStop network. It grades employee sales performance and doles out hours accordingly. Stores that sell the least Game Informer subs (or whatever bullshit they're pushing on people these days) get less hours in their district. Employees who are not the top tier performers get MAYBE three hours a week. Worth noting is that an average week will consist of Chronos distributing roughly 90 hours to a busy store like ours that must divide them amongst four full timers and six part timers. At some point, especially if you can't be bothered to shill magazine subscriptions to annoyed customers who are just there for their games, you are very much working at GameStop because you like it (read: are crazy), not because it makes you any real money.

I can’t help but giggle at all of ZP’s animations. They’re so simple but deep on humour. The music and, of course, the narration really pulls this all together for an enjoyable six minute romp through Yahtzee’s mind ^o^

I'll admit it, I laughed at that way harder than I should.
So that means Portal and Undertale are now the only games Yahtzee has nothing bad to say about.
He discussed the game a little bit in a column he made, and he doesn't think Undertale's flawless. He complained that the spritework was shoddy and inconsistent with what era of graphical style it was supposed to evoke, so I guess that's a worthwhile complaint.

+dave nic I don't know...I actually enjoyed the experience after the non-buggy version was released. I think the batman-feel was much more enhanced with the vehicle since it's a signature. It also incorporated stealth mechanics into it. The only point I agree about Yahtzee on is the story...but I really don't play Batman games for the story and I'm not sure why he would either.
After playing all the current ones, I went back to Asylum to see if it has withstood the test of time. Suffice it to say, I was not impressed and am glad it evolved into a game like City.

If you like batman at all you should read batman arkham asylum serious house on serious earth what the first game was based on great comic. (just download cbr reader and a cbr of the comic). PS killing joke's good too.
+Hitome I thought the whole Batman feel was ruined by the inclusion of the Batmobile. It really just didnt have a place, and it added to errors like blowing up unmanned tanks (if Arkham Knight put a person in them, then what). Tbh the whole game wasnt as good as the previous ones including Origins.

Undertale is so highly recommended & rated, even by Yahtzee here, I might as well give it a try. It's about $10, right? Not much I can lose even if I don't end up enjoying it, aside from a few gumballs I could had bought. Of course, I'll keep my expectations tempered, but I will raise my expectations a little more higher than usual.

I'd argue "that's kind of the point", but ultimately it's your opinion.
I finished SOMA two years ago and the experience still lives in my head rent-free. It got under my skin. When people talk about videogames as a medium for immersive storytelling, if not an art form, SOMA should be a point of discussion.
When Yahtzee out of all people puts Undertale to the number 1 spot right on the last minute like that YOU KNOW it's good.
I'm actually quite surprised he enjoyed Witcher 3 as much as he did, given his "meh" reaction to the other two. Physical confirmation that CD Projekt Red knocked it out of the park, from stonecold Yahtzee himself.

Then Deltarune pops out of nowhere, reawakening my love for all things cute. So inevitably I replayed the pacifist ending again and started subconsciously auto-writing fanfics in my mind, where *[Hyper Spoilers]* and *everyone* lives happy ever after.

no, i'm actually seriously playing through undertale, with my dad, and he's having an alright time so far!
The only games my mother had played before she played Undertale was Diablo 1-3 and then she played Undertale. She hasn't beaten the game yet (Only Neutral so far) but she'll get there!
It seems you have made a terrible decision. Also honestly all the runs have powerful experiences but in different ways.

What I don't get about the "undertale haters" is that they proudly say they hate undertale and expect anything other than a shitstorm. Never thought someone as cynical as Yahtzee would give Undertale his GOTY pick.
Ah, but Undertale is based off of Yahtzee's cynical complaints about games.
I ignored undertale for the longest time, not because I didn't like it, but because snotty 12 year olds kept shoving it in my face declaring it the best thing fucking ever cause sans made a fart joke, which ruined the experience for me, however now that I shuttered myself off from the hype and then actually went in and played it, I can firmly say I enjoyed it, I like the characters because they are actually well written with good personalities. But my point is, I can never actually get into things that people shove into my face and tell me its great, all the while giving me either non existent, or extremely poor reasoning as to WHY its such a good game.
Ill give you some reasons:
The characters, while unassuming and cliche at first, have very deep and sometimes downright unnerving character arcs, even minor ones.
The attention to detail for literally EVERY detail is astounding. Every part of the game has some sort of explanation in a detailed and meaningful way, either from discovering new dialogue or finding a piece of environmental storytelling.
The narrative is extremely well-written. Not only do the characters really drive the surface level story in such a fascinating way, but the game introduces a sort of "meta-narraritive" that deconstructs and analyses the meaning and purpose behind typical RPG and video game mechanics and tropes. It fits in brilliantly with the main story and is unbelievably fleshed out.
The soundtrack is hands down the best in any game I've played. Period. Not only does it do a fantastic job at setting so many different tones in a way that doesn't feel forced or incoherent, but the use of leitmotifs and secrets within the music also adds to the narrative and expands upon the story.
Combat is unique. No battle ever gets stale. Attacks greatly differ from enemy to enemy and are fun as hell to play, especially if you enjoy bullethells.
Finally, you have deep choices and meaningful consequences. Everything you do in the game is remembered, and has purpose and weight, even through multiple playthroughs, which goes along with the whole meta-narrative of deconstructing typical RPGs. You can ACT enough upon a monster, and eventually you'll be given a chance to spare it. Or, you could just kill it, which is easier. Even THIS, how killing is usually the easier solution, IS touched upon in the narrative and it's very thought-provoking.
There you go. Id say those are some pretty valid points to convince you to try it out. If you DO end up giving it a shot, please pay attention to every little detail, from the music, to the world, to the characters. Every little detail, every story element, and every mechanic, is explained in great detail.
Its not the greatest thing ever, but it's a damn great RPG.please give it a go.

Damon Llopiz the community of a game is what sucks me in, so when it's a bad community then there's a good chance I'm not gonna play the game. But overall I'm into games so I can have new experiences and enjoy a story, so if Undertale does have a well written story I'm happy to give it a go.

Has anyone else found it funny that people bash the Undertale fanbase, more than we actually see the fanbase? It's like the Internet went into critical levels of hate toward any online community, without any real cause.
As for the game itself, it's really worth a go. The best part of singleplayer games, is that even if the community is shit, you can still enjoy the game. ^.^

Really happy to see someone recognise SOMA as one of the best games of 2015. It flew under the radar and exploded. I've got it out of boredom, thought it was one of those B grade games that you play through just to add it to the "done" department, but boy was i mistaken. This one goes deep literally and mentaly.

I did a pacifist run, then reset and did genocide. It was crazy fun and heartwrenching right up until I got stuck on Undyne. I couldn't kill her lol adn if I can't kill her no way would I finish the game

Undertale is the first game in a while that had me losing track of time while playing it. I haven't had such a clever, succinct, enjoyable gaming experience since Valve released the first Portal game.

Gonna go with Undertale, pretty much for the same reasons as Yahtzee. Sure, Witcher 3 probably deserves all the credit it gets, buuuut I have a thing for meta-narratives, toying with expectations, having fun with the game's mechanics and design and not being afraid of experimenting with them, and some good ol' deconstruction. Undertale does game narrative rather splendidly.
Sure, the game isn't all that subtle, it doesn't offer major moral dilemmas nor philosophies that challenge your thinking, its overall morality is very black and white, and gameplay mechanics pretty simplistic, but what it does with the game design is something I cannot ignore.
Still, it's very much a niche game, so seeing it sell over half a million copies is something I didn't expect to see. Kinda like what happened with Dark Souls 1. But honestly, I'm happy it has gotten so much attention.

Thank fucking God, I'm not the only one who was dissapointing with "The Beginner's Guide". Thowing that arround with the same price tag of The Stanley Parable, and yet having NO replayability, even less story, and literally nothing to do but run forward for an hour and a half (when at least The Stanley Parable had a ton of jokes and babies burning to death somewhere in the middle) is just pathetic and felt like a scam.
But at least I got my refund, jokes on the dev.
I think The Beginner's Guide is one of those games that's only going to hit home if you can relate to it. My life has been pretty good as lives go, so I doubt that kind of introspective game would really be my kind of thing.

Also, it should be noted that only games Yahtzee has reviewed on Zero Punctuation are viable for the list, so whether the game didn't make the list because of that or because he wouldn't have liked it anyways is something we'll never know.

Undertale was okay. Like, the story was cute and yeah, it sort of played with RPG tropes, but I wasn't blown away with it like most people were.

It's a cute game. You play as a little kid who plays with monsters and, if you get the right ending, you convince a flower/goat/demon child thing not to be evil and everyone lives happily ever after. It's Pixar levels of cute.
It's not complex storytelling. If you want to argue about the theme of pacifism in regards to video game mechanics, then I would agree that pacifism in an RPG is a cool mechanic.
In regards to the story, however, it's pretty plain. I would argue that the Genocide route is a much more interesting way to experience the story, because you're going against what you're expected to do.
Not that it matters, because LISA: The Painful/Joyful have much better narratives than Undertale. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

That Undertale review at the beginning was so good I just wanna watch it over and over. It's so lovely how it contradicts every Zero Punctuation review thus far by not bashing the game with a single drop of dark humor. The dissonance of it is hilarious and is just the best.

Lot of mixed reactions regarding Undertale in the comments so here's my thoughts regarding my experience. Light Undertale spoilers:
My first experience in Undertale, I had not read anything and knew nothing about the game, only that it was supposed to be worth playing. I started playing through the game and got told by a couple of the characters that I should try to show mercy, or that I could talk to some of the creatures. Sure I thought, though it was concerning that I wasn't getting any exp I figured there would be plenty of time to grind if I needed to but I killed a couple here or there that I couldn't work out how to spare (specifically Migosp) so if I ran into that guy I would attack and kill him. I got to the part of the game where Toriel blocks you off from proceeding and I'd explored the entire ruins. I didn't realise some monsters reacted to repeatedly "sparing" so I eventually tried fighting her to weaken her a bit (like a pokemon, right?) and then she might react differently. I didn't want to kill her as she had been really kind from the beginning of the game and had a parental vibe with the main character, and I already felt bad for fighting her in the first place.
Of course after taking off a little over half her health, I did a super attack that killed her in one hit, and after she died I felt like total shit. Instead of going through to the next room, I reset the game and started again. This time I didn't kill anything because I felt terrible about killing Toriel. I got to her again, worked out how to get her to yield, and moved on. I immediately met Flowey again, who ACKNOWLEDGED THE FACT THAT I HAD RESET THE GAME OUT OF GUILT. I murdered her and reset the game because I regretted it. I'm not sure why but that hit me really powerfully.
After that I was totally hooked. I did not have a hard time investing in the characters or the world, and enjoyed the "bullet hell shooter" style fight mechanics. The game is funny and charming if you let it take you in. So that's my 2c. People aren't just jumping on the bandwagon, nor is it relying on Earthbound nostalgia (since I never played Earthbound but still had a great experience with this). After finishing the game, I could not bring myself to ruin my game with a genocide route so I watched a let's play and Flowey even called me pathetic from within the other player's game. It's deconstructive, clever, funny and well written and I think for the price everyone should give it a look.
Advice: Instead of saying something is overrated use the phrases "it wasn't my thing", "I didn't really see the appeal", "I didn't get it/like it". It means the same thing but it doesn't make you sound like a fucking asshole who's angry that other people have different opinions.
I just love the Song of the Volga Boatmen. (And a shout-out to Ilya Repin, too. (Who will not be judged by the cover.)
