      Yeah, it's a bit of a hidden gem I think. The game is pretty incredible if you like melancholy atmospheres, slower but more strategic combat, and heavy exploration. And if he thinks the difficulty curves down he clearly hasn't ever fought Failed Champion or The Radiance. Or the more recent Nightmare King Grimm.
      Biggest thing though, I can't believe how they managed to make a giant cave have so many aesthetically unique areas.

      @Tortferngatr Před 5 lety +19

      @@Dliciousization I think the difficulty curve changes, going up over time as a whole but doing down against individual enemies. Early on it isn't that hard because enemies just don't have that many ways to hurt you besides contact damage (plus you have plenty of windows for healing and the enemies have small hitboxes). Hell, I don't think I died early on at all. Lategame you can just tank or move past most of what would otherwise hurt you.
      Dash does make fights easier, as do a number of charm pickups. At the same time, enemies also start getting stronger, some can deal double damage and some have some nasty tricks up their sleeves.
      Later on enemies get tougher and the dash becomes a thing you need. Shade Dash allows them to start pitting you against *real* fights, like NKG, the Radiance, and the Godhome bonus bosses. (It also helps in the Colosseum of Fools...)

    While Hollow Knight is of the cutsey style, it more than makes up for the atmosphere. I mean, holy dicks wrapped in sandpaper, the Ancient Basin, Abyss, and Deepnest are so well made, that with a limited palette, sound and music alone, can create very oppressing and rather foreboding experiences.

    Other things I like from Hollow Knight that are in Dark Souls but weren't mentioned: enemy variety, telegraphed attacks, bosses that teach you in phase 1 then build on it in phase 2, hidden areas, lack of direction given to you by the game leading to exploration.

    • @Bragglord
      @Bragglord Před 4 lety +8

      While I think that HK is a good game, the whole 'encouraging exploration' thing is only a plus if the game world itself is very interesting. Even then, monotony can set in if you have to keep backtracking over the same areas and it can kill any atmosphere the game has going for it.

    • @judeclark397
      @judeclark397 Před 4 lety +46

      @@Bragglord Even though the game has similarities to DS it's still an entirely different genre of game. It's a mertoidvania which means a lot of exploration and backtracking. Also I find it hard to describe Hollow Knights exploration dull when half of the abilitys and most of the areas and bosses can be skipped or barley explored to beat the game. So that means discovering many different enemies, bosses, power ups, and entirely different play styles in charms is all reward for exploration.

      Honestly, Hollow Knight is a much more enjoyable and longer experience. I know that it is simply your opinion but I don't think you would be saying it has as much quality if you actually 100%'ed HK. He is actually right to an extent. Cuphead does seem like dogshit when compared to Hollow Knight. Not saying Cuphead is bad, it's an 8/10 in my book but HK managed to exceed normal expectations and ended up being a near perfect 10/10 experience. There are some minor nitpicky problems so I would probably just put HK at a solid 9/10.
      The world and how it was just perfectly laid out just resonated with me so well. The story hidden in the world isn't even a cliche one either. Not going to say much to avoid any spoilers but as an overall package the game is amazing.

      @@jackgarcia5926 Whether they wanted it or not, the two games feel very similar. Sure, there are major differences, it's not like Hollow Knight is a ripoff of Dark Souls, but the grim and lonely atmosphere, the way the story is told, the death mechanic, the themes of decay and struggling against the inescapable entropy, the abundance of side paths and optionnal areas, the insistance on imposing, dangerous bosses that you have to learn the pattern of the get past and of course, the difficulty... All of that adds up to make the two games feel very close and I doubt Hollow Knight would have looked the same if Dark Souls didn't exist. It's definitly an inspiration.
      And, to make this clear, I'm aware that none of the elements I just listed are unique to Dark Souls. But when you add them all together, you get something that looks like a Souls game. Also, saying HK isn't like DS because it's a metroidvania forgets that DS is almost a metroidvania and was certainly inspired by the genre mixed with RPGs. The sprawling open-world with an abundance of side paths that you have to explore and backtrack through once you unlocked new areas is not something From Software invented.

    3:27 Yeah, the difficulty takes a drop after you get the dash, then your overconfident ass goes into the White Palace, Nightmare King Grimm and Radiance fights before you are repeatedly kerbstomped. Then, while you're crying tears of pure salt and replaced the controller for the third time, the game invites you to check out this delicious little lore tidbit behind a platforming challenge called "The Path of Pain", which it turns out is very, very accurately named.
    I guess the point I'm making is that sure, the difficult feels like it drops as you progress through the game and yes, you can get the bad ending without too much hassle but if you really want to see everything Hollow Knight has to offer then that difficulty curve is going to start going very steeply upwards until it resembles a wall. You don't see people lamenting the fanbase of Dark Souls, but probably because it's the better accepted fanbase.

    Ubisoft: "Sometimes at Night I take a little model of a tower and shove it (up my ass)"
    So, If i'm getting this right, yahtzee was ubisoft's older, abusive brother. Yahtzee tormented his brother with lego ass-towers for breaking his little lego house. Eventually, ubisoft grew fond of having a tower shoved up his rear, and, combining this with his love of the old elder scrolls games, decided to spread his love for towers through the medium of sandbox games. Yahtzee, after becoming a game critic, decided both to torment his brother and do his job by ripping every game ubisoft ever created a new asshole.
    Not sure if this has left joke territory and gone into fancfic territory, but i'll roll with it.

      Thankfully that's as optional a part as it can be :) I really like when games includes these things, it usually forces you to try out a lot of tactics you haven't tried before. That being said I can understand people complaining about the white palace platforming "mini game" sequence, but I actually didn't mind it much, maybe because I used hiveblood :P That's optional as well, but it breaks with what you've been doing all game AND is required for beating the "true final boss".

    I wish he would've just given this the usual double bill treatment. Hollow Knight tends to evoke elements of the Souls gameplay but clearly has it's own direction it wanted to take in terms of the gameplay and story and to merely compare the points is a very apples and oranges thing to do when on it's own it stands perfectly well to someone who had never played Dark Souls.
    I dunno I'm just biased because I liked the game and am a sucker for people who understand that sprites were supposed to evolve to be hand drawn and not mire in the pixel purgatory.

    • @Cyberw4y
      @Cyberw4y Před 4 lety +4

      Dead Cells takes on the pixelart exceedingly well. It's a filter over 3D (which at the time of production wasn't popular, but did gain some attention as it progressed) which makes the whole art seem far more lifelike and fluid than other pixelart games (such as Catacomb Kids). The background/foreground art in Dead Cells is by far the most gorgeous thing I have seen in a 2D game, even surpassing Hollow Knight in its gloomy, toned-down atmosphere, akin to that of Darkest Dungeon.
      Plus, it's variety. Sprites can evolve into hand drawn or grow into a beautiful fluid thing. Or even stay the same and still prove itself well made and fitting (TBOI, Risk of Rain). Variety is the spice of life.

    Hollow Knight is a wonderful experience. The world they built is just mystical, and I love the feel of it. The gameplay is also solid.
    Dead Cells (which I'm currently playing). I dunno, I like the fighting, I like the way you progress in theory, but there just isn't enough variation to make doing all those same levels over and over a rewarding experience.
    After a dozen or so runs, that first floor (and the few after that with time) become very boring, and it just makes you want to stop. The random layouts mean nothing most of the time because there's little difference. A different amount of upgrades, same ole' shops. It's all the same to your mind.
    If they fill it out a little bit (like you're supposed to in ea). Add more enemies and more variation, it could be a pretty good game.

      The looping back around and backtracking of Dark Souls is quite similar to Metroidvanias right?
      Of course Dark Souls using stamina is quite unique though.

    • @BlackINKim
      @BlackINKim Před 6 lety +18

      I guess what Hollow Knight borrowed from Dark Souls is mostly the vast, grandiose world that once reach a golden age but is now dying of a slow, silent and drown out death, where you meet various characters each having their own adventure parralel to you and who have to struggle with not giving up hope and surrounding themselves to the madness that reak throughout this land's very own air.
      Not so much the various Metroidvanias elements that aren't so much associated with Dark Souls since they've been pretty much integrated to the gaming landscape by now.
      Also, when you die, you have to go back to the place you died in order to recover your currencies, and if you die before, you lose them forever, and the ennemies are mostly undead, hollowed version of the mens they once were.

Nuclear Throne is more hectic and puts emphasis on target priority and your reaction time. Enter the Gungeon on the other hand is a game that requires planning ahead and making the most of what you have. Enemies in Enter the Gungeon tend to be more methodical, whereas Nuclear Throne's enemies tend to be more spastic and spontaneous. Both games have a very different flow, and have a unique feel when playing them.
      TL:DR - Nuclear Throne is a spastic twin-stick shooter rogue-like, whereas Enter the Gungeon is a room-based resource management rogue-lite akin to The Binding of Isaac.

      Toki Wo Tomato Considering stamina management is about the only thing that differentiates Dark Souls from other Hack'n'slah games, I wouldn't count the combat as THE defining aspect of the game.

    Honestly though I'm getting sick of everything being compared to dark souls.
    Can people NOT THINK OF ANYTHING ELSE!?
    How about Fallout 1 and 2? Divine Divinity? Diablo?
    What about those kinds of games!?

      Why? it's cool to compared and the same creators of Dead Cells said something about inspirations to Roguelike/Castlevania/Souls games in this last about the combat. You can see that in the home page of Dead Cells
      Hollow Knight obviously has inspiration to Metroid, Zelda and Faxanadu, but when you play you can see stuffs and unfortunately for other games you think in Dark Souls sometimes. The Shade in Hollow Knight and Bloodlines in Dark Souls and the entery world. Not simiralitys in mechanichs or combat system.
      Hollow Knight is different to Dark Souls but have something like souls. Magic essence of this game in the purity essence inside in the entiry game. I love Hollow Knight so much. Have something about narrative and other stuff.

      I know, I love the game Dark Souls as well.
      But it is getting rather annoying that appears to be the ONLY game that exists anymore.

      I understand that but i prefer see the impact in the community this game what neccesary was for the industry too. It's weird and well when something become a meme can transform to annoying people to compare to all. Remind the case of Crash Bandicoot and the comparation in one review was a disaster.

    Dead cells has nothing to do with Dark Souls. I don't see any connection whatsoever

      SuperBendercade no it is a rogue lite. In bindings of Isaac you explore, and should you die you return back to the beginning, which is an aspect of every rogue like/lite. The world in dead cells changes every time you start a new run, Dark souls on the other hand stays constant. The developers of dead cells dubbed it a souls like in my opinion only to attract attention. Again Dead Cells, though I like the game very much, has nothing to do with Dark Souls.

      It's become a bit of a meme to describe any game with difficulty and dark elements as "just like Dark Souls!"

      The sames creator of the game Dead Cells use the example to Dark Souls in the Combat, you can see in the page home of Dead Cells. Souls Lite Combat. And they use the this words ''Roll roll roll your boat gently down the stream...'' and they mention the Boss fights and the minions too.

      The words is the creators of the game. You go and tell they are wrong lol. xD
      EDIT: The Words of creators of the game.

    I will have you know that the sewers were and are incredibly easy. Just grab a firebrand to expose buried scorpions and the electric whip to clear platforms from a safe distance. This was and always has been viable, even when the whip had no 3-part attack combo (which was introduced before the chain damage). Your biggest threats were scorpion ambushes, which fire attacks on-demand root out, and the kamikaze bats can chunk you if your weapons don’t have very good vertical reach (like the Rapier). While the whip has auto-aim, it’s best used at mid-range, allowing you to reach across toxic pools and keep your distance until you learn the timing of enemy attacks. Furthermore, this strategy is usable to people who have just started a new save file, since both the whip and firebrands are usable from the start.
    For items, I would first rely on bear traps and sinew slicers; these help you keep a safe distance while locking enemies into a set position and facing one way, so you can roll past them and take care of other threats first if necessary. The bear traps are also extremely useful for locking scorpions into facing one way, so you can attack them without letting them retaliate.

      now it's an awesome game, but it's quite the trip to this point
