- Jojo Mayer reveals some of his secret weapons for creating modern sounds on the drumset. Developed over years of experimentation with his cutting-edge band Nerve, these concepts push the boundaries of modern music and blur the line between acoustic and electronic music. Try them out for yourself!

snare off, he used the brush to be the snare to have loose or tighter snare effect, wow have never thought of that!
It's just amazing how much drumming has progressed in the past 80 years - from Gene Krupa/Louie Bellson/Buddy Rich to Weckl, Colaiuta, Donati, Minneman, Mayer, Benny J Greb, Wackerman, etc. It's mind blowing all the incredible stuff out there - you could spend thousands of years just listening to this great smorgasbord. If I didn't have to work I'd be down in the basement listening to all this cool shit. Gonna have to marry a rich woman and live out this fantasy!
I hear you brother. Toss Papa Joe into that mix. Another innovative giant.
Any update after 7 years? Also I’d add Gavin Harrison
man these are great idears
this guy is my hero. "using it as a muffling device" ...how come i never thought of that, it makes perfect sense and is so useful.
..love how the out-of-tune trumpet so palatable to the ears, just jiving with the percussive drum melody.
Jojo has a groove like no other
that last groove is THE SHIT....so funky it hurts...you gotta love Jojo
Gotta love Jojo Mayer, he's incredible.
Every time I see Jojo, I feel like practicing for long hours! He's such an inspiration.
I'm not a drummer, but I love watching this guy explain stuff.
jojo always works with such amazing musician teams! love it
Indeed, that was awesome! It looks like Jojo's creativity is endless...
Jojo has insane technique and groove coming out of his friggin' ears!!! Love listening to him!
It’s the most amazing that his techniques are!!
Truly unique and groundbreaking with all the back story of studying the whole cannon of the drumming history and tradition.
What a master of sound he is an inspiration to be a drummer and practice he must always be listening for new sounds Love his playing
I wish I had a mini Jojo Mayer to carry around with me just so when I'm feeling down, I can pull him out to hear him say "idear". Good stuff.
Really nice sounds from this jam.
Thanks, I knew it was some sort of EQ but I liked the balance between punch and resonance from that bass drum.
I think it´s amazing when drummers/ musicians/ humans share their knowledge so openly with others. I love it.
Talking about textures...I´ve just uploaded a video that perhaps is useful for you (no, not you, Mr.Mayer. but maybe for somebody else)
One the Greatest!!!
I wonder if Jojo could do a great Christopher Walken impression?
Hahaha
MarlosBurgerDrums needs more cowbell
Probably. He’s a really funny dude. Somehow, along with all the time he’s spent mastering his drumming and musical skills, he’s also become a master at card tricks!
Oh god. Eehh no, God!
I'm impressed. I'm inspired. Thank you!
I like this guy when it comes to electronic music.
Awesome. Just Awesome
Great brush technique!
i am happy for ths lesson of a control performance
btw, he also triggers the bassdrum using a Clavia Nord Drum drum synth (+ Roland trigger on the bass drum), in some of the examples in these Textural Technique videos it's very noticable
wow! great idears!!
Eye dears all around!
Nice sound ideas, i really like it
Filling space with a force-field - that is the art.
dude's a genius
exactly
Cool sounds.
WOW ... 2:50
That is a very cool rhythmic effect.
That Jojo has lots of "IDEARS"!
Jojo and his fabulous "idears" ^^
still love it!!
I like how he shows us to use the dual tone to mute the floortomb but actually makes more contact with his hand to kill the sound :D
I don't actually think there is a need to mute the floor tom. I think it sounds incomplete.
Vic Firth mandated xd
JoJo for Mayer!
Wow! Neato! Wish I could play a beat like that at my church gig!
I would listen to an LP of that band.
3:51 Love the sound of that beat
Very cool. The hi-hat foot splash is a nice little touch.
Love the dreadlocks... all though, just getting back to using them. Been using the SD1 custom generals for metal. SD4 s and brushes, looking for more jojo techniques
Love all this;)
How is that guy doing those effects with the trumpet? Sounds badass
Amazing guy.
yes great ideas
Awesome
that's cool, cheers
What a crazy left foot movememt there while the mini mallets best! Wow! I was like he has to hit that hihat… no wait he really doesn’t! Would love to go on a masterclass ws with topics like that. Lg us de Schwiz!
Grande profissional Baterista Acústico excelente qualidade no ensinar e tocar o instrumento parabéns 👏👏👏
Damn is drumming technic are so fresh, he should made an amazing drum sampling loop for Reason or Native Instrument, cause, the rythm he made are realy inspiring for making not only electro music but indus rock or fusion jazz or hip hop.
Holy cow that trumpet player tho.
I always notice that too.
Love the video! I' m running to the pads! God bless?
bless indeed
the master of finesse....
Jojo Mayer for drummers is who Guthrie Govan is for guitar players. A phenomenon.
there certainly are people who can groove like that. i think he has some of the best hand and foot technique on the planet but pure groove i'd have to tip my hat to mr. Steve Gadd, Questlove, Steve Jordan, Bernard Purdie and more
I'm aware, but the sound from the examples where there's no enhancement, the bass drum still sounds killer.
That's a good idearrrrrrr!
MASTER
Idear
I like those Live Wires!
What I like about Jojo is they made drum machines and got rid of alot of drum players but he makes drum machine sounds that sound better than the computers do. That's the best I can describe it anyways. I don't think most drummers are doing brush work and trippy techno music.
And jojo exclaimed: "Another device that I've been using freakishly for crazy beats"
great
Dope..
Jojo is the Einstein of the drums.
He is a bloody specialist in live acoustic "Jungle"/"Drums n Bass" playing. Ive seen Bands like Apollo 440 playing with two drummers in the 90s... guess Jojo could play that stuff by himself only.
it actually sounds great with both brushes
Fuck sake !! This guy is so creative"! really inspiring stuff .
It's hilarious how silent this bassist is and yet he's enjoying it.
It's because it's a very short floor tom. Short floors always sound nice either miked or not.
impresionante
It looks to me, on the close up of the snare head those things or something, really pitted the head at :55 My guess is if those heavier brushes do that, Vic Firth is not going to want him to mention it. Great drummer
Good idee-ers he has
トップのTシャツお気に入りなのかなー
なんか嬉しい!
Oh my god this guy is insane. Nobody, NOBODY grooves like that.
that groove at 1:10 damnnnn son
What a paranormal music !
Thai on a shirt is so awesome! hahaha
Wow
best in the world
i dig
I did not notice the difference at all between the 2 different brushes.
The recorded comparison isn't very good at all - you'll hear a huge difference if you compare them to regular brushes. I love using the Live Wires with a band.
3 18 please which piece is that so gooood
GETTING BACK TO EXPERIMENTATION.
MOSTRUOSO...
โค้ก !
THAT. SNARE.
Whats that opening song man? So weird and wonderful.
+newboldspawn "Loot" off of his record "The Distance Between Zero and One"
Ha! Ha! That was God bless!!
One snare...................so MaNy TEXTURES!!!!!
innovators at work-play.
Jojo (T_T) increíble
aahh... if only miles would still be alive...
what about those weird brushes at the beginning? What are they called?
I love Jojo Meyer as much as anybody, but this just seems like a Vic Firth commercial. Use the mallet as a muffling device? That's a stretch. A hand works just fine, thanks.
I did cry about it. I found the end of my swizzle sticks to be a better tissue than mute though...
He used his hand the entire time. COME ON JOJO
No you must use the vic firth mallet. What wrong with you?
Do you want them to stop paying Jojo?
Man I miss when Takuya was his keyboardist. Not that his current one is bad, but I preferred Takuya's choice of sounds and context.
in the black and white slow mo at the beggininglook how much jojo's stick rotates. weird.
