- Can a machine improvise?
Jojo Mayer's new solo project ME/MACHINE is an adventure where human performance and the archaic power of drums interact with cutting edge generative music technology in real-time.
It explores new possibilities, narratives and syntax of how humans could coexist with digital technology in a symbiotic way.
An improvisational duet, creating a closed loop interplay between the innovations of man and machine.

NÚMERO UNO!
You're up there too my dude! You're friggin awesome!
no sabía que te gustaba jojo mayer estepario
Stoked to see you're a Jojo Mayer fan. Love you even more you freak!
You and Square Pusher should team up for an album #JustSayin
I love how JoJo always seems to be out on the edge of drumming feeling around just to see where it goes. Inspiring to watch as always.
Since many years that Jojo leads the drumming world. Thanks to share your music/drumming with us !!!
Always one step forward! Genius.
One step forward how?
I’m assuming he’s talking about Mayer’s usage of triggers, midi, and electronics in his drumming. He’s triggering chord changes and sounds with the BopPad in front of his snare, and what seems to be a trigger on his kick drum. Every sound you hear is being played or triggered live, he’s not playing to a track.
@@NICKHAM16I agree it is progressive in a since but Akira Jimbo was triggering chords, chord changes, playing melodies all live in the 1990's he just needed more sophisticated hardware to store sound patches. 🤷🏿 I lived in Japan for many years and got to see Akira play a few times by himself but putting on a whole melodic and harmonic concert. The difference is Jojo is playing how he plays and expressing himself
Yes, it is quite cutting edge.
But not because of him triggering chord changes and sounds (that's been done before since the 80')...this is not what's happening here from what I understand.
He's improvising live with a generative AI algo. That AI engine is fed in real time with his drumming from which it generates a set of sounds, chords, etc. to which Jojo is reacting by adapting his playing, further feeding the AI engine with new data, further pushing the improvisation in another (or same) direction.
@@MichaelWashingtonAE I think how he set his cymbals so high is a clear nod to his predecessor Akira Jimbo.
Unreal combo of incredible technique, technology, and artistry. Jojo continues to push our craft into new territory. Well done, maestro!
As a fusion keyboardist, I found this one of the more interesting drum videos I have watched in a long time.
As a bass player, there not an active musician who inspires my composition more than Jojo. Thank you for continuing to push the boundaries!
We need a reunion with Screaming Headless Torsos.
So glad to see u on fire again!!! One of ma favorites of all time!!!! Long live Music!!!
Joined the “cymbals high in the sky” gang 🥵
@forrestrice
Change is alright, keeps things fresh. But yes, this does not work for me.
People always comment negatively about this and don’t consider how much more ergonomic it is for playing, especially when the cymbals are titled like this. Listen Mangini or Terrana talk about it.
what a load of BS. you named some of the most showy drummers for that argument? besides, what they mean is that its the most ergonomic way to play cymbals that are high up. not cymbals per se. this here is mainly show and any person that ever tried drums for a bit will understand why. @@RockyTop85
@@RockyTop85 actually I think it’s a good thing! It also helps in recording sessions, no cymbal bleed in toms’ mics and more presence in the overheads 😬
I will always be in awe of Jojo's talent
EPIC!!!!!!!
24K subscribers for Jojo is insanely low. This dude has been killing it for decades. He should be at 1M plus. I think it's underappreciated because it's not understood.
Jojo. You should take some top 40 song in the states, some hip hop or pop song, and just go nuts with a cover of it. Probably get you at least a hundred thousand subs right away. More people need to see and hear you drum.
Love how you continually push yourself and your boundaries. Thank you Jojo!
Always searching for new forms, like Miles Davis❤
WOw! Something unusual, as always from Jojo ! And I love IT !
phenomenal Jojo !
My life's flow changes 5 hours ago! Thanks for sharing. Maestro.
The Bob Ross of drum and bass
One of a kind
Like a film score. Epic!!
My dude just backhanded a gong.
Have you never seen a drummer before? First day on the internet?🤦♂️🤡
I know right. What did that gong ever do to him!
It has been done before many times
@@spanqueluv9erlol guys, take a chill pill, easy with the over reactive, nerd rage, arrogant and rude comebacks… he obviously meant that last back punch of sorts on the gong (which you likely didn’t even wait to watch before commenting), which really isn’t very common lol, he clearly didnt mean that first back stroke with the mallet
@@monetarnie3841 he obviously meant that last back punch of sorts on the gong, which really isn’t very common lol, he clearly didnt mean that first back stroke with the mallet
Excellent as usual!
lovely, especially that last part. Thx for sharing
Switching between matched and traditional. Impressive
Always innovating! Love it!
Pretty awesome! Usually Jojo has his cymbals (btw, HHX Anthologies?) more down low and flat; this setup reminded me of Ndugu Chancler's with the three high cymbals. Also that looks like a Keith McMillen MIDI pad!
Amazing in the true sense of the word.
❤ it!!! miss seeing you at Nublu nyc. Stay well jojo
Best drummer of our time!!!
I would say most unique
SUPER!!! BRAVO JoJo!!!! 👏👏👏🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Love the sound!!
Loving the new cymbal setup. More of this, please!
Bello/Magnifico.💯💯💯💯💯💯🌡️

Excelente pieza!!! Por favor, ven a México!! 🤘🏽
Solid! Nicely done!!Full Steam Ahead! Cheers!;-)!
Love you man. Amazing. Keep playing man don’t stop.
Brother JoJo Is Killin' The Machine…
This is Art !
If there is one man to showcase the new Evans electronic module is this genius
good call. I thought that was a wave drum.
Is that what’s he’s using?
@@JustanEdrummer I really don't know, but Jojo is an Evans artist
That was so... incredible. So inventive, and forward thinking. thank you for posting
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
your match grip is still on point......of course
Consummate legend Jojo .. still blown away, after so many years of following your craft.
Absolutely love it! Looking forward to listening to more of his exploration with technology.
Это саунд из неизвестной планеты! Просто КОСМОС! Джоджо - инопланетянин, посланный на Землю покорять всех нас звуками других планет!!!🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Amazon playing! Also great production and visuals too. Jojo‘s drumming never ceases to amaze me!
Genius!!
Hmmm.... intriguing 😮! Is this out on Vinyl, C.D., etc. as Jojo's latest release?💡🥁🎶♥️🤙🏽🔥❗️
Grossartig! Externical Importation
Wow! That snare sounds blummin beautiful! :)
Jojo is like a good wine, it gets better with age!!!
Man, that's super dope.
Petfecto...great🥁👍🔥
Big Jojo Mayer!
this moved me, vielen dank
Incredible sounding kit and recording. Genius level playing, as we’ve all come to expect from Jojo.
Jojo Mayer, einer meiner Lieblinge! 👍🥁🇨🇭
Please do another tour with this, it's pioneering
Like a range of musical conversation. So sick!
He's 61 and still play drums absolutely amazing and perfect 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
🥰🥰🥰
Man, it was phenomenal to see such a great performance, but to also be able to see the hesitations, mistakes, and recoveries.
Sometimes I see people ripping chops and it just makes me want to stop playing, but this inspired me.
Same with Nate Smith and Simon Phillips. Always pushing themselves, playing on the edge, sometimes stepping over, recovering beautifully. Real human music. ❤
Durísimo!!!!!!🔥
sakti bossque
I’m speechless on how amazing this was
The last push was in my face too! thx jojo amazing
A GREAT INNOVATOR ! he changed the game
Very nice textures and rhythms. And some super nice stick hit & mutes, especially on a crash, that sounded very special.
...love it...
I love how it seems like you've always chosen not to be threatened by technology and just embrace the change to open new doors to your creativity.
It's really inspiring.
Also nice to see that coming from a gray haired man hahaha. Hourra for Jojo forever young Mayer!
Great vibe. Exquisite technique.
最高、Jojoのドラム大好き
JoJo yr a star
Nice to see some updates! keep going Maestro!
So freaking awesome, I want more of this
El mejor ! Lejos. Baterista contemporáneo zarpado.
Always such a wild man & never disappoints…
That was f.....n great man❤❤❤❤
❤🔥
Amazing hope to see this live someday!
Omg. This made my day. Dude. What are playing???? Awesome.
Lovely work on this Jojo !
¡¡¡Grande, maestro!!!
The groove master returns! Incredible stuff
Killer as always!
Total inspiration Jojo
Extraordinario! Intro with 70‘s mood
awsome!
this is so cool, jojo continues to innovate beyond drumming
Bravo!!
Very interesting improvisational framework with some pretty extreme creative constraints! What I think I'm seeing is Ableton running some kind of neural network (or perhaps even a simpler model, like a hidden Markov) and generating MIDI sequences when triggered by a drum hit, mostly the kick drum. I like how it forces you to kinda prompt the model with the kick and in turn balance that with the snare and hihat. The electronic pad seems to trigger pads and sounds that are less stochastic and have more sound design than the bass phrases. This setup, in theory, allows you to swap the neural network for another model, just as if you swapped a drum or a cymbal for another sound. Very interesting!
What kind of pad do you think he's using on the front?
@@Cygnus-X1No idea what is that particular pad, but anything with a bunch of independent zones and the capability to send MIDI messages would work. That one seems to be nice and pretty compact though, as opposed to something bulkier and possibly more distracting
Second glance it actually looks like a Keith McMillen Smart Fabric pad
Gezus H, look at the big brain on you boys. How about you stop analyzing and actually LISTEN.
Who gives a shit WHAT he’s using?! It’s like asking a Pulitzer Prize winning novelist what typewriter they used. Drummers are so stupid this way. Close your eyes and open your ears…actually LISTEN. There’s actual music happening out of all the gear, and Steve Gadd made beautiful music on a fucking pizza box. You guys would be trying to find out what flavor the pizza was in there that made his playing so cool. 🤦♂️
@@Cygnus-X1yep it's a kmi boppad, been having two on my drumset for the past couple years, it's insane what you can do with those
a hell of a touch.. as always,
chapeau
You Sir, you are my hero/inspire
Thank you, that was great!
