I've maintained for decades that the Kingston Trio was one of the five greatest bands of the 20th century, and this episode of the Gertrude Berg Show more than underscores the point. The band was just a few months into the key transition that saw Dave Guard depart and John Stewart come on board, and they didn't miss a beat. Absolute, utter, jaw dropping perfection. We are immeasurably blessed that this broadcast has survived.

The KT were one of the best groups of all time--folk, country, jazz or rock. This is some episode. Wonderful.

Brilliant, wonderful Gertrude Berg, born Tillie Edelstein (1899-1966)
    Thank you very much indeed.

John Stewart is the co-author of "chilly winds".... the other author was John Philips, later of the "Mamas and Papas". It is amazing how the singer-songwriters of the 60's and 70's are interconnected.

I tapped into this show after a couple of minutes had gone by because I had read that the Kingston Trio was on. I had no idea that there was a "Gertrude berg" show. I have barely heard of her. But this was a fortuitous find for me, because the Trio was great-about 11 minutes of music-but so was the story line and Gertrude Berg. The rousing finale put me out of my doldrums, a totally pleasant surprise! Great, in fact!

It's from "The Gertrude Berg Show," a short-lived sitcom about a middle-aged widow returning to college. Episode aired on CBS January 18, 1962. Original series title was "Mrs. G Goes to College." By the way, that's Trio 2.0 with John Stewart.

I have never seen or heard of this show before. Why did I get the distinct feeling that I was watching a proto-episode of *The Facts of Life?*
Nevertheless, it was a great episode, and it was wonderful to see the Kingston Trio in a bit of a different context. Brilliant.

Thank you. Looks like pretty young in their career. Ending song full of energy and Cedric Hardwicke looks like he was in a good mood.

Not that early in their career. John Stewart joined in 1961 when Dave Guard left after fours years in the KT. Looks like this show was aired in 1961 or '62

Nick Reynolds mentions (sarcastically) that he and Bob Shane went to Menlo "business school" for college. It was an adjunct to the Menlo School founded in 1915 and later expanded from a prep boarding school to grade school (6th to 8th grades), the high school, and originally a junior college but then to a four year college specializing in business administration.
I attended Menlo School as a day student in my freshman year and as a boarding student for the next three years, graduating in 1964. It was with great dismay I realized that one could have spent 50% of one's formative years (from birth to 22 or 23 years) imprisoned in "the Menlo System". One of my Menlo schoolmates actually was imprisoned for that long. Upon graduating from Menlo College, he got an advanced degree at Stanford and then _returned_ to teach and serve on the staff. He ended up becoming the dean of the college and died in harness serving thusly. I hope to God that he was buried elsewhere. Kinda reminds me of the old con in _The Shawshank Redemption_ who got paroled from prison after serving 80 years.
