    Good on you for getting stuck into it yourself I was hoping you would. It's going to be really exciting when you get everything built back up and turn the key! I'm intrigued to know how much the head refurb costs if you happen to mention it in the next vid 👍

      Thank you.
      I hope to have the head checked in the next few days by a specialist to see the extent of work needed.
      Once I have it all there will be an update.
      I can’t wait to have this running again, but properly this time!

      Thank you. But it looks like that things will become more complicated as the engine will likely need a full rebuild

    Well done for getting it apart my friend,some things to watch out for
    1/ the exhaust manifold to head studs can be very much of a pain to work with and must be removed evenly in order that the manifold casting does not crack ,they can become stressed at this age and will fail if not treated with great care
    2/ before you put the head back on remove and clean out very well the timing chain tensioner,and the bolts that hold the chain wheel to the cam ,this must be replaced gently,and thread lock must be used on the cam bolts to prevent them working out of the very fine small threads good luck .

    Great video, I think you made a good decision to send head off and get on with other jobs. Gets it back driving sooner.

      Thank you. Yes, I found a garage known within the classic BMW community and he’ll have a good look at the head in the next few days. It’s also halfway my daily commute, so it’s very handy.

    Can you give us an idea how much you are being charged to have the head skimmed?

    • @GentilsGarage
      @GentilsGarage  Před 5 měsíci +1

      A company in Crawley charges around £50 + VAT just for a skim on a “while you wait service”, but it has to be fully disassembled.
      But my head will need a bit more work than that, so I’ll have a specialist to have a good look at it and do the full reconditioning.
      More updates once the head work is done
