It's hard enough for bands to play in different time signatures at the same time. This guy is rocking multiple time signatures just by himself.
The fact that Danny is in his late 50’s and can play like this night after night while the band is on tour speaks volumes.
He just turned 62 a couple days ago.
@@thefluxcapacitor1 was gonna say he's almost ready to start collecting social security lol
Dude is 6'5" too. The power he brings to it is often mentioned. He hits the drums HARD
@@jdspencer60 Lol!
Glad you caught onto our request under your reaction to the studio version haha. Danny Carey is a beast.
I read the comments a lot more than people think. But yes, Danny is a beast!
@lillyjanereacts I believe his nickname is" the octopus" lol just like Niel Peart from Rush was called "the professor"
Regarding your comments at 11:50 : they say Danny made a deal with the Devil. To this day, we don't know what Danny got, but the Devil got drum lessons.
The opening sequence is played on a custom designed Mandala electric drum pad that Danny himself co-opted to help create, made to sound like what i believe are Ghatams. And the following drum (pad) is made to sound like a Tabla. Both of south asian origin. Danny has spent quite a while learning different percussion styles and techniques to incorporate into his art, and studied extensively from the master tabla player Aloke Dutta. 🤘😁
Yes, and the instrument he plays the tabla sound on is called a Korg Wavedrum. 👍
I was at the Toronto show in November and I am a new tool fan.i remember SOBER from the 90zz but this FEAR INOCULUM album is absolutely musical genius by all members.BEST band alive at the moment IMO
Not only can he "do it", what sets this professional drummer apart from others, is that he also wrote the drum music for the song. I sometimes feel people forget that part. How do you come up with drum beats like that and make it fit a song from scratch? The creativity of these artist is amazing and was absolutely necessary to become a pro back in the late 80's and early 90's when these guys started out. They didn't just luck their way into stardom, they are extremely good a creating music.
They do it separately. Maynard actually works the lyrics around the music in proper time. The Fibonacci's code...
Well put. There’s a lot of skilled musicians that can mimic these parts, but to pull them out of thin air? Dude… 😳🤯😍
You nod your head in 4/4 and then the signatures go into all brilliance. Keep nodding 4/4 and it will come back. Music is amazing!
I've watched this video countless times and I'm mesmerized every single time. That Futurama reference is perfect.
D C is this generation’s Neil Peart. Absolutely phenomenal. He hits so hard! And the posture. So much respect.
Amen!
@@jjs71072 I would agree with that. There are many great drummers out there but few EXCELLENT drummers.
The only things he moves are his arms and legs. It's incredible.
The master...he beats those drums like they owe him money ...but with such finesse and grace ...he truly is the greatest
You can do anything from Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer and I'll be here. Maynard is music's King Midas... everything he touches turns to gold.
We are so fortunate that MJK is in 3 bands all with their own style and talent! It seems that everything he touches turns to gold.
he only do the lyrics. fanboy
This song was actually written by Danny Carey. Maynard's just along for the ride.
@@ewfwefwefwef Nice try junior but you're making no valid point at all... his singing is what I like in all 3 bands. It has nothing to do with fanboy, it has to do with being a fan of his singing style. But you keep trying little guy, you'll make a fine keyboard warrior someday.
@@sirsmudge1000 Yeah... but that's not really relevant to what I was saying. I'm a fan of Maynard's singing so if she's doing any of them from any of his bands, I'm in. Wasn't a shot at Danny's drumming.
Every member of TOOL is a master of their craft. Listen to 7EMPEST for some of Adam's best work on guitar and Justin's best work on bass! Danny is always a beast.
I def plan on checkin out more of their live performances. I know Tool has a lot to offer.
I love the Futurama reference. And yes, Danny did make a deal with the Devil. Danny wont say what he got out of it, but the Devil certainly learned to play the drums!
Danny Carey is honestly the beating heart of the band! ❤ my favorite drummer
I've been drumming for 20 years. I can do 2 poly rhythms at a time, sometimes 3 in specific circumstances. How the hell he can do 4, and so consistently, is unimaginable.
"PUSHIT" from their live album SALIVAL. 🤞🤞🤞✌️
Danny Carey is an entire drum section by himself.. Amazing................... DAMN!!!!!!!!!!
Danny is one of the G.O.A.T's in the music industry, as other's have mentioned, any of the 3 bands fronted by Maynard are great choices, Puscifer has multiple vocalists, Co-fronted by Carina Round, gives you unreal harmonies, alongside a rotation of other musical artists, in various renditions of their songs. Then there's A Perfect Circle, Maynard and Billy Howerdel formed it in the late 90's and it's another band that you can't go wrong with any of their songs! Welcome to the Spiral!
He can actually do 5 rhythms at a time with "Everything" He has available to Him. Only in Private of course.
Wow.
🤣
😂
5 limb Paradittles
WTF ROFL!! 🤣🤣🤣
Wow that was incredible! It's like each of his 4 limbs has their own brain. Just amazing! He's irreplaceable.
They do say Danny did make a deal with the Devil. No one knows what Danny got, but the Devil got drumming lessons.
Came here looking for this comment and was not disappointed!
When you're playing a different time signature with each limb at the same time, you are the guy.
You know it’s gonna be amazing. You know Danny is gonna straight up melt your face right off your head…and still the anticipation is intense
Danny is special
L. J. Danny is a certified bad ass in this video. Be advised the first few minutes are him warming up. As the video progresses he does more and more! Danny had his 63rd birthday on 11 May. He reportedly has played drums since he was around 10. So I submit to you girl that anything you have done that long you should be good at. He is not good, He Is GREAT!!!!!!!
My favorite portion of the video is coming up. When the overhead white light start to flash at 10 :22 or there abouts. Danny gets DOWN to the serious drumming.
Parts of his work in this video are orgasmic!! He does ALL of that then fixes his hair! And finishes is full circle! I mean DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That drum set is called Synesthesia mandala drums
Thank you!! Now I know (:
@@lillyjanereacts And knowing is half the battle (GI Joe reference). You set yourself up for that, lol.
Another reason why tool is elite❤️
How many other Tool fans here just to watch another reaction to this band? OGT since ‘94 here 😂.
It's refreshing that you listen to us and take our requests into consideration
That song is f****ng incredible
He’s a alien from Pluto! He’s not from around here! I’ve been playing drums for a long time and all I can come up with is he has a gift of splitting his brain so that one side doesn’t play like the other. He has the ability to play different grooves and time signatures with his right and left! Lots of practice and that ability makes a awesome drummer. He on the other hand has stepped it up more and can play four to five different grooves with both feet and arms. Not many people can play like he does and it’s really good to see people react to that because you don’t see this kind of drummer very often. Great reaction and song!
Absolutely love your tool reaction vids, this one was another example of why I keep coming back for more😎
Keep being you.
Right in two is probably one of my favorite pieces by them, period.
I love the sound of the stick hitting the rim of the snare
you just watched the greatest TOOL live performance ever recorded! it doesn´t get better!
Sometimes you just bow and say DAMN.
These guys are all perfectionists. Together the find a way to collaborate.
Tool is exactly what you get when you put four musicians who are perfectionist and the best on their instrument.
Mazel Tov!!! Another TooL fan is born!! Another recruit to the ranks😉
His drumstick timing is what blows my mind
Great reaction btw. Love the energy!
Pound for pound, greatest drummer ever.
Some of the most creative music ive I've ever heard. Its the equivalent to the movie Back to the future
00:35 to 1:45 realizing when this band started. pretty mind blowing really. the whole band is just incredible.
This is a girl who understands what its all about🥰
oh shit futurama reference!
That's just plain Octopusary, that's why he is called the Octopus😄💯🔥
The drum sound you're referring to is a tabla drum, mainly used in Indian percussion.
The drums slowly building from start to finish just incredible….this is easily my favorite tool song……
Edit: rewatching this for the first time in a couple months and it got me thinking…..
I wish I could do ANYTHING as well as Danny Carey plays drums I mean anything
Greatest drum performance!
Was waiting for this. Let's fuckin' go!
beaUtiful reaction! thank you !!:D
As i always said, Danny Carey is not human!
It's Danny freaking carry. Octopus. Great reaction.
Tool Sober Live from the Redding Festival!!
Tool remains close to my heart. They repaired a piece of me me when I was so lost. This band is all about progress and growth as an individual. Their music will forever be a part of who I am.
my favorite Tool LIVE performance is Sober
Two words... world class... Danny carey is absolutely elite as far as drummers are concerned... I hope you understand how difficult it is to maintain the the rhythm and multiple timings and look so effortless doing it.
It's good that you've listened to the studio version as it's better easier to understand the song. This is to appreciate Danny. He's one of the few drummers worthy to pay homage to the late Neil Peart of Rush.
Live TOOL is bestest experience first hand. Keep spiraling out on their albums. Great reaction. 🤘🏾🖤🖖🏿
Best Tool live... Sober! The one with 10million views. Shows the power of Maynard.
You don’t have to say much, your face tells how much you enjoyed everytime Danny goes off 😂
Lilly Jane
At that time when concert video was recorded, Danny aka "Octopus" by Tool fans was 59.
Tool is the best band of my lifetime!
Read this under another Tool reaction video.
Legend has it that the Devil and Danny Carey made a deal. We have no idea what Danny Carey recieved, but the devil got drum lessons.
The Futurama reference...YES!!! :)
6:21 Synesthesia Mandala Drums is what that particular drum pad is called.
However, the sound being produced, is based on Tabla drums. Used in Indian/Pakistani music.
in addition, Danny is playing a different beat (time signature) with each hand and hist legs
TOol is famous for the drummer, gassist and guitars are on their ow parts of the song. Pro level stuff from this entire band!
i love watch ing your reaction to the music
Danny is using special drum pads he developed with a friend called Mandala pads. They have up to 32 different striking zones that can be used for different sounds
Mandala*
@@The.Dementor what you mean? I totally spelled that right the first time 😏
Lilly Jane this video is special. Just like Danny and YOU!!! This band is great.... My youngest daughter has seen Tool. Make Dad proud girl... I saw that smile!! This man is on a different level...... So smooth!!! All of the greats are like that!!
I am going to share my latest theory with you. With the advances in AI & robotics I think this is a machine. Not a man!!!
Who knows, I may be crazy. I've been told that before. BUT most humans cannot do this. The entire band is GOOD!!!
Lilly for your information --- Tool is on tour right now with some old guy you maybe have heard of Alice Cooper. So you are a band kid, well this may melt your brain!! It is powerful...... Later lady.
That drum that you want to know is an old wave drum by a company called korg. That particular one he has is old 80s style. And more analog than the newer models. Hope that helps your question..
Its Danny. All you need to know . Pure magic 😇😇😇
Yes! A Futurama holophoner reference! That made my day. Keep rocking out Lilly. Your reactions are awesome
Yes another Futurama fan!!
Yes!! One of the best episodes!!
His mid switches and off groove walks are epic.
Best live. Sober.
Sober from lollapalooza 92!
I love the look on a new comers face. Always blown away 😆.
the live version sounds better than studio, tool is not your typical rock/metal band for sure but i love them and he was like 58 or so when this was filmed, crazy
The Rapid City 2002 concert they did live is pretty perfect! The whole concert is on CZcams to listen to, the sound quality is 👌🏼 but it’s only Audio no video but has visualizers throughout the 2 hour show.
I contend that Danny is a one-person drum line!!! Equal to many marching bands... A true master of his craft!!! My favorite part is coming up -- when the lights begin to flash --killer!!!!
This was so darn good, you almost needed a cigarette at the end!! Later Lady.............. Thanks
Love your reaction! Danny Carey is one of the best if not the best drummers today period! In search of new techniques to his drumming he has studied tabla with Aloke Dutta. Carey has also been featured in many drum and music magazines..
I'm just jealous that you got to see this track for the first time. First times are always special!!
One warning possibly from other reactors of music on CZcams that I've watched. Althou I LOVED the no talking style you did, just let the music play, other reactors have said that if they don't do enough talking and stopping of the vid they're redacting to, CZcams has issues because it seems to become some form of Copyright issue. I don't know if the pausing you did was enough to suffice the sensors of CZcams or not but apparently if it wasn't then just beware.
Awesome vid thou and YES, reacting to ANYTHING Tool will get me watching, especially if you do this same style of little pausing thru them!! 🤟🤟
If you want some idea of how insane Danny is: at 7:54, when he turns his stick around listen to his bass drum coinciding with the bass guitar. What he does over that are two bars each of 16th note phrasing where the snare is tapped on different notes in two bar increments such that lands on different parts of the hand pattern every two bars. It's polyrhythm and it is PHCKNG HARD as hell to play, and as difficult to try to explain.
A layperson wouldn't see or understand it, but anyone who studies drumming knows that what he's doing basically requires that a person have four brains, one for each limb, to pull it off, because they're all working virtually independent of each other. Also note that I think he's 61 years old, or at least late 50's in the video.
I welcome any pro drummer to explain it better, did the best I could with my two years of theory classes 20 years ago, lol.
That little drum pad that you like the sound coming out of is is a Korg Wave pad, one of the originals I believe.
Danny's drumsticks look like hummingbird wings in his hands. ✌️
Ol' rubber-arms gon' getcha!
I don´t know if anybody already mentioned it. The drum on his right, the toilette seat looking one, is a Korg Wave Drum.
This video is the most bad ass thing ever! It makes me almost cry every time I watch it. He is a fucking god! Tye part where he looks at the camera and smiles, like fucking aye I did that shit! Love it!!!!!
I think that is the best performance
What's funny is that the 33 on his shirt also refers to the 33/8 (6/8 6/8 6/8 5/8 5/8) time signature of the song
Danny Carey, the Octopus!
The best drummer on the planet, also, the greatest drum playthrough video of all time. Epic
The drummer was killing it.
Sober is the best live performance. The one from the 90s !
That cool drum he's keeping time with is called a tabula
Danneys a bad man..the octopus’s🔨🔥
Sober live is my go to video.
8:40 That Cymbal Be Constant 😁
13:00 Danny havin too much fun 🤣
Loved seeing you smile through entire reaction. Occasionally you'd have the woah or that's cool look. And now you see why we said Watch this one. And Daney Carey is one of best drummers on planet. Neil Peart RIP was on it and one of Carey's Inspirations. Also Mike Portnoy former drummer of Dream Theater. And Current drummer of Dream Theater and beats per minute record holder. Also Drummer formerly of Slipknot Joey Jordinson, and Alex Bent of Trivium. Travis Bent of Trivium Drum playthrough of Beyond Oblivion with full vocals you just see him play it is pretty crazy.
I believe it's called a tambala. The "That" drum that you were asking about.....
Polyrhythmic and beyond!!
